Constantly learning to become a better driver on and off the track
Sonoma Raceway | Toyota GR86 | 1:53.67 | GGLC
First time trying out a 200TW tire, and it did not disappoint!
Managed a huge PB even in hot weather (this session was 85F).
Definitely lots of time left on the table, and a lot more to learn for next time.
It appears that the stickier tires confuse the track mode control in the car, as it was kicking in almost every corner. will need to practice with all stability control full off next time.

First ever wet track day, learned a lot and had a great time as always with the 86 Challenge folks. This was in the last session of the day, when it was starting to dry up a bit. Messed up T3 and ran into a little bit of traffic towards the end of the lap but was still my fastest lap of the day.

What oil do you use? Nice driving!
Currently using Kirkland 5w30 but considering moving to Mobil 1 0w40 for the hot summer months
Just bought a used 23 track red with 5k miles.....I hope it wasnt 5k of this lol.....(nervous laugh)
holy fuck bro ur cooking
Man. You are fast!
Have you been concerned about your pressures? I’m sure you get this all the time. I looked at your setup and didn’t see any mods for the pressure drops.
yes and no. the oil pressure drops really should not be happening, but also there isn't anything I can really do about them right now, short of an accumulator. If you have been keeping up with 900brz, there will be a solution in the future that I will likely adopt. But until that is available, there isn't much I can do about it right now.
Damm bro getting faster n faster n faster
And here I couldn't even enjoy your great lap because I was nonstop looking at the oil pressure drops 😅.
Very nice
great telemetry, great track, great car
that oil pressure drop gave me a heart attack as a zd8 owner.😢
Do you have any mods to help maintain those oil pressures on right hand turns?
as of right now, just a 1qt overfill
BEAST MODE: [ON] OFF
That was a very tidy lap. Beautiful cheers mate.
I knew they were going to be SX2s as soon as I heard them yelling 😆
I think you need to countersteer faster and catch the slide sooner. Instead of gradually trying to catch the slide which is leaving you behind and always trying to play catch up.
yea i agree, still learning to get the car loose and practice car control
wow the oil pressure on the righ hander turn is normal. nice, what type of modification did you do?
the mod list is in the description of every video!
Nice work! Subbed. Did you install the Coilovers yourself or paid someone to install? Curious cause I’m guessing you’re in the Bay Area like me.
I had CM Autohaus do them the first time, and then I re-adjusted the ride height after switching RLCAs myself.
How do your front tire shoulders look? I'd guess with that soft front roll stiffness and mild alignment, you're probably wearing the edges quite a bit. Would explain the understeer.
the sx2 takes quite a beating, and with -3 front camber they are actually not bad.
Nice driving! Would you recommend the annex coilover?
I haven't tried out any other coilovers so I don't have a frame of reference. They seem to be working well for me though, and I'm happy with them
Thanks for sharing!
Done anything for the oil pressure issues?
so far, just a 0.5-1qt overfill.
Hmm...this track isn't too far from me. (BRZ gen 2 owner) 1:26 That oil pressure drop was brutal. Happens on downhills when swinging to the right.
Yea looks like it got down to 21
I was watching that oil pressure like a HAWK
no real long righthand sweepers at LS, so it shouldn't be an issue. For complete assurance, I'd get an accusump ($700) to help keep pressure in the system
Did you see it dip in the corkscrew ? All the way down to 20. I overfill my GR86 on the track by half a litre and this doesn't happen.
Fast affffffff
Nice driving, thanks for sharing.
I like your driving style. No nonsense jerky moves. Just business. I have the BRZ version with Ohlins RT coilovers, Perrin 22mm front and 19 mm rear SB, Whiteline LCA and Perrin steering lockdown. 18x8 lightweight Fast wheels and 225 wide indy500 tires. -2.5 degrees camber all around. The car has pretty non body roll and pulls similar lateral acceleration as yours on skinnier tires. I was was wondering why everyone is running 17" tires on the track?
Thanks! 86 Challenge requires 17" GT Radial SX2 tires, as that is the spec tire. 17" also is cheaper so it works out!
Great run, sir, deep respect! About the oil pressure level: it's REALLY good news the fact that 1q of overfill quite solves the issue, without the need to install aftermarket pieces! If I can ask, how do you measure such an overfill? I still don't really understand when the oil level is at its "max", because the two sides of the dipstick always show different readings: when one side is at the max, the other side is usually below; what side is the "right" reading, the one with the higher or the one with the lower mark?...
I wouldn't say its solved, it's just mitigated. Usually I fill until the dipstick reads the top dot, then add X amount on top. You always take the reading of the lower side of the dipstick.
@@studiousGR86 Thank you very much for the answer! Just mitigated, uh? So, what's your advice on this issue?...
did you drop the oil pan to see if theres any rtv?
I had it dropped around 5k miles, and there wasn't much
hey man idk if you get asked a lot but do you have a oil baffle installed, and would you recommend one for regular street driving, although the oiling issues on these boxer engines really only occur on high G right hand turns and most normal people that wont be an issue or will it?
I don't have an oil baffle, just 1 qt overfill for the track. For street/canyon driving, you will likely be fine with a smaller (0.5)qt overfill. I wouldn't run a baffle for now because there isn't one that shows any significant improvement. SYMS baffle seems to be the best option currently, but it is not a big enough improvement for me to go for it yet. There are talks of a larger oil pan being developed, and likely I will wait for that
@@studiousGR86 cool thanks man your an inspiration

So sick! Awesome to see you improving!
Thanks for this vid! I have the same car but i am too afraid to drive faster
Takes practice but you can do it!
🔥thank for the help jason, see you next time
Oil pressure dropped at 36 psi (0:49) and 35 psi (1:18) both on right hand turns. Has this issue not yet resolved?
not yet, stay tuned to @900brz channel for the latest updates on a solution. I ran a 0.5-1qt overfill this event, and encountered issues with T5 and T8 all day long
@@studiousGR86 iirc some are running an accumulator which apparently helps.
Awesome lap, congrats on the PB! It was good to see you again. I ended up with a 29.95 on Sunday. A PB for me and happy to break 30 but still a mile off from your 28.11! Still more work to do haha
Awesome!! breaking 30 is a huge milestone. great to see you too!
Which lap timer is that? Can show oil temp and throttle and braking?
I'm using an external GPS paired with RaceChrono App on the phone. the telemetry is provided via a custom solution from @nostreetracing86 with the data taken from the CAN bus.
nice video. Have you considered going to a drift event to get more comfortable sideways? I recommend good luck league in california. It's an autocross-style cone course on a skidpad. I think it would help you to react in a more relaxed way when the rear end steps out. Again, nice video and nice car.
I have considered it but just havent had the time to do a proper skidpad/drift training. It's definitely something I want to do in the future. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check them out!
Did you leave the nannys on?
Used track mode, which is a "half off" on the nannies I think
@@studiousGR86 thats why it was so herky jerky. go full off.
wow. great drive. Curious, did you shift directly from 4th to 2nd braking into turn 11? I was wondering if 2nd or 3rd will be a better gear for the GR86 for that turn.
Yes I shifted directly from 4 to 2. However, looking at data it doesn't seem 2nd gives meaningful improvement over 3rd gear there
@@studiousGR86 Thanks for sharing.
You're unsettling the rear of the car with your slow nudges.
Great sound! Exhaust mods?
I have the HKS Spec L2
Never stop posting these videos please. Planning to buy a GR86 soon and these vids are making me more inlove with the car
Same!!! Going to order one in August!
Nice lap!
Nice lap👏👏
Is you engine stock? I want to track my brz but still scared about the oil pressure drops in right turns. Yours seems to be ok though.
Yes the full mod list is in the description. Only oil cooler for the engine, otherwise stock
You should be fine if you just do a 0.8L overfill and thicker quality oil. (I use 0w-40 300v)... If you don't want to install an cooler. Just make sure you back off/cool down if oil temps get to 260.
what can you do to prevent that?
@@soldat996cheapest way is Oil Baffle Pan, not the most effective but it will help the dip in pressure by a lot Most expensive way is dry oil sump but that’s really expensive On a scale of 0-10 effective, If stock is 0 and dry oil sump is a 10, Oil Baffle Pan would be 4-7 depending on brand Different brand have different design to reduce the oil pick up problem But better than nothing imo, plus you can redo the oil pan seal to prevent that RTV issue
There aren’t really any oil pans right now they have proven to prevent the oil pressure issue. The RTV has not shown to cause any problems.
