Replacing the motor on my vertical mill
Due to a power outage, I burned the motor up on my vertical milling machine.
I was able to buy a new used motor but I had to modify the shaft on it to match the out motor. This video shows the modifying of the motor and the reassembling of the mill.

This is EXACTLY where I am at today!!!! New distributor, carb countless hours trying plug intake gaskets were leaking nothing really fixed it. Replacing my chain this weekend. EXCELLENT VIDEO!
Thanks. I hope replacing the chain fixes your problem.
I enjoy all of your videos - thank you for taking the time to teach, show, each step… as well as where you encounter issues (too many videos are edited to only show the ‘successful progress’ and skip over the realistic issues we face when working on cars (especially old ones)
Thank you for the kind words. A lot of times, I am learning as I go along so many times, I run into issues that I was not expecting. I try to show as much as I can without making the video too long and boring. Thanks for watching.
I would be furious. That is such a stupid mistake. A good quality gasket isn't expensive. I love that part where you started the car to get the distributor to drop down!! Awesome.
Thanks. I definitely learned my lesson when it comes to finding a good engine builder. From now on I will be buying a long block assembly. That is if I ever need another engine. My goal is to never need another engine. LOL
Good pointing out all the issues. There is a lot to be not just concerned about, but alarmed.
Thanks, it was definitely a learning experience.
What was the symptoms I have a 2005 5.3 rebuilt I changed the fuel pump. Checked the injectors all good put new plugs and wires and the damm engine has a rough idle sometimes smooth then stumble at idle not to bad give it gas smoothens out but feels like the power is 70 percent then what I think it should be do u think it’s timing and can I check timing by putting the piston top dead center and remove the valve cover to see if the valves are closed or do I have to remove the timing cover just frustrating having these issues after spending money to have it running 100 percent I love the corvette 💯
Rough idle, no power. You can check it by putting the piston on top dead center on compression stroke and checking to see if both valves are closed. With my car, it still seemed to have a miss at any speed not just at idle.
@@timewiththedurbins did it feel like a cough or a miss fire because when I rev it up slowly it feels like it coughs thru the rpm
@@ernestoalfaro1923 Mine felt like a misfire at any RPM.
Taking the steering column out makes it much easier. The column is very easy to remove and replace.
Yes, that was the last time I removed the interior without removing the steering column.
Not sure if my sbc has 70K or 170K. I do wanna swap out the heads but I am in your predicament as it does burn a bit of oil. Hopefully from the valve seals (Oring type) . Decided I'll just run it into the ground until a blown head gasket or way to much oil burning before I do anything. Good info on the lifter rods as Jegs didn't tell me about the .100 extra or the new plugs needed. Already have EZ efi on the engine. It was the best thing I've done to the vehicle. Driveability is amazing.
As far as the engine goes, if I had to do it over, I would buy a long block with stock cast iron heads and a quadraJet carburetor. I am not looking so much for performance as I am dependability and economy.
Hello I hope you still respond because I have a urgent question. I just first time disassembled my engine like your's in the video and I wanted to ask, how does it work when you tighten the nut back on holding the rocker arm? I am new to all this, and I am constantly thinking the engine oil will loosen it up. My rocker arm is held in place by a nut on top, and some halfround thing with a flat surface, where the nut comes on top of it. I hope you understand what I mean, like is there no security or threadlock needed for the rocker arm installation? 😅 I'd be glad to hear from you 😄
The nut is a self-locking nut. You don't need any thread locker or lock washer for them. Most companies selling car parts recommend you buy new ones when rebuilding your engine. Normal engine operation should not loosen the rocker arm nuts as long as they are in good condition. If you have any doubt, I recommend replacing them.
@@timewiththedurbins thank you very much, I was really wondering how it didn't get loosen from all the engine oil spraying around,
The two relays at the front, they each control one headlight door. GM had just one there once and changed to two, we think it was so that if one fails you still have one headlight door working. To bypass one and use the other for both is really not "wrong", just not the OE setup. Other than the high cost, it makes sense to convert these to motor actuators, then eliminate all this vac hose stuff
It appeared that my car had 2 originally. Someone along the way switched to one. I wanted to make it back to original. Definitely when these go bad, I am going to convert to electric.
I just rebuilt my 71 the original screws for the grill are 8/32 fillister philips. Mine were. Stripped so I used helicoils.
I like using helicoils to repair bad threads. Most times the repair is stronger than the original threads, especially in softer materials.
Great Video! I have a Gen 6 489 BBC with no mech fuel pump provision. Wonder if this will work in my '76 C3 tank? My tanks has a stupid rubber bladder in it and I see yours dont. I read the in tank pump is the only way to go..
I'm not sure this would work in a tank with a bladder. An in-tank pump is definitely the way to go. They are so much quieter.
@@timewiththedurbins Ill research. thx!
Hi. Great video. Would it be possible to have a sketch for the REAR WHEEL BEARING SET UP TOOL to make me one if possible? Much appreciated.
Email me at: mdurbin57@hotmail.com and I'll email back a sketch of the tool.
GREAT video. Thank you! I notice that you removed your trim tag on the driver side door jamb, what did you use to reattach? Wasn't sure if it was special hardware or basic rivet.
Unfortunately, the trim tag was missing from the car when I purchased it. I am going to buy a new blank tag and stamp it with the correct codes for my car. I will use stainless steel pop rivets to mount the plate.
I tried this sealed everything couldn't get pressure or vacuum?
You may still have a vacuum leak, or the gauge could be bad.
@@timewiththedurbinsI'm swapping the intake 1 plug looked real lean
@@christopherpoucher483 Good luck. sometimes chasing down a vacuum leak can be frustrating.
I had the same issue some years back. The engine had a distinct misfire at idle but no symptom at cruise speed. I tracked down the leak by measuring the temperature of each exhaust port using an IR thermometer pointed at each header tube near the cylinder head. Normal temp was around 720°F and the "bad" cylinders read close to 350°. When I pulled off the intake, I saw this: drive.google.com/file/d/1fWTPhUkCrfsRicyXEjhUEVc9XGk94KSv/view?usp=drive_link (link to photo) The engine was assembled by an established "professional" who put the failure on FelPro providing a faulty product. FelPro blamed the builder for faulty installation. As you can imagine, the builder disagreed with FelPro yet offered to make it right. I ended up re-doing the job myself using FelPro steel core gaskets which the builder paid for. I used gasgacinch on the large gasket mating surfaces, smeared a thin film of Permatex water pump & thermostat housing gasket maker (designed to be impervious to glycol coolants, unlike regular RTV) around the water ports, and smeared a thin film of Permatex motoseal gasket maker (designed to be impervious to fuel, unlike regular RTV) around the intake ports. I set the FelPro steel core intake gaskets in place then set the intake manifold in place. I tightened the intake manifold bolts in sequence but did NOT torque them to spec, only snugged them down. I let that set for 24-hours so everything would have plenty of time to fully cure. I removed the intake manifold, then meticulously removed and cleaned away any squeeze-out, ooze and runs. I used RTV in place of the end-seals, set the intake manifold in place, bolted it on in sequence to spec then let that sit overnight. I then double checked bolt torque, bolted everything else together, topped it off with my Q-J, ran it for a week to and from work, then re-checked the torque again. No leaks.
What size engine is that in your video?? I'm doing the pushrods and rockers on my 350 vette.
The engine is a 350 Chevy bored .060 over.
What size engine is that in your video?? I'm trying to do
Mine is a 350 Chevy bored .060 over.
What size engine is that you are working on. I'm trying to do the pushrods and rockers on my 350 corvette engine.
It's a stock 350 bored .060 over.
Whow, that's pretty cool that you still have the mini bike grandpa and grandma got you years ago. They would be so proud. I really enjoyed the video. You done a great job 👍
Thanks. I'm really proud of that minibike. I put a lot of miles on it.
This has been repaired before. You can see the difference between that part and the rest of the hood. I got the same thing on mine.
A lot of things on this car had been worked on at one time or another. I really don't like getting a car after someone else has tried to restore it. This is the last one I will buy.
Were the wipers vacuum or electric from the factory? Not the wiper door.
The wipers themselves were electric from the factory.
@@timewiththedurbins thanks
Nice job! I thought you forgot the key on the reassembly, it just wasn’t on video. I did get a little nervous when you were working on slowing the chuck down with your hand, I’ve seen to many ring fingers disappear. Not many people have all the skills you do, how do you keep your friends, neighbors etc. from doing their work? Sure enjoyed the video, also thats a nice shiny red vette in the background!
LOl. My sister gave me a hard time about my ring too. I was a machinist for 50 years and I never wore any jewelry. After I retired I started wearing my wedding ring. I keep forgetting to take it off. I need to pay more attention to that before I lose a finger. My cousin lived on a farm. One time when his was about 15, they were putting up hay. He went to jump off the hay wagon and caught his ring on a corner post. His lost his finger. Thanks for watching.
I just built a brand new engine and I have a vacuum leak around my intake in my throttle body and I just I wish I had somebody like yourself to help me I'm tired of doing things by myself but great video
Thanks. I know it is frustrating sometimes working on old cars. I would be pulling my hair out if it hadn't already fallen out on its own.
That was pretty cool to watch👍
Thanks
Hi Sir I love your content. I'd like your opinion on which brand of interior plastic coating matches the best. My car is a 1977 with buckskin.
The stuff I use and really like is made by Corvette America. You can purchase it through any Corvette parts supply company. I purchase most of my parts from Zip Corvette. Their prices are very competitive, and their shipping costs are reasonable. They sell the Corvette America brand Dye.
I always lap the valves..never had an issue..
I checked mine and they were fine.
Pretty sure those blinker lights you bought from ebay are the Front blinkers, not for the rears... they still work and look ok, im just sayin.
The new ones I purchased for both the front and the rear were smaller than the original ones, but they worked, and they were reasonably priced.
@@timewiththedurbins that is really all that matters.
@@BeerWineandShine I was trying to keep the cost down for the lady since she needs to make as much money on the bike as possible.
What are the clearance angles on the lathe tool to re-cut a center?
The angle of the cutting edge is 30 degrees. The tool is ground down pretty thin to fit in small center holes. I will try to make a video showing the actual shape of the tool.
Enjoyed the vid. You say near the end you managed to replace the plugs without taking off the tank. Would be great if you could do a video showing that. There are a few on here already but they're not very good..
I wish I would have made a video but unfortunately, I no longer have the bike.
Hi Mark do I need to have a baffled gas tank for the submersible fuel pump to work without running dry ? I have a 1973 corvette..
No, you do not have to have a baffled tank. The hydro mat that attaches to the end of the fuel pick up tube on the pump keeps the pump from cavitating. The mat works as a prefilter too.
Nice 👍👍
Thanks
My ears hahaha
Every "ding" on the exhaust hurt my ears too lol.😂
Sorry about that. I wear hearing aids. I can turn them down, so I don't notice the noise.
Really enjoyed the video. That was pretty clever what you did using the fishing line to get the screw in place. That's a sharp car you have. Great job. 😊
Thanks. I hope it's the last time I ever have to do that job again.
It's a great looking Vette. I love the color. The tinted windows are a nice addition as well. Looking forward to seeing it completely finished and ready to go . Thanks for sharing these videos.
Thanks for the comments. The paint looks better from a distance. I am planning on repainting the car Elkhart Green this winter. The car has a black interior and with the dark tint it was really hard to see the gauges during the day. I removed the tint from the side windows but kept it on the rear window. I plan on changing the interior color to medium Buckskin when I repaint the car this winter.
Looking forward to seeing the changes you have planned for this classic. Again thank for sharing!
@@user-gl7mj7xd6z I have posted several videos showing the progress on the car.
Really great video! I done this job 1 month before and can say all the basics are in there video. What do you done withe the inner bearing? they had some indication of spinning, was the pressfit tight?. I had the same issue with one spindle. The big problem, aftermarket spindle are chunk!
I was able to replace the worn spindle with one from a 1980 parts car I have.
Another excellent video. You two guys have the best instructional videos on C3 Vettes on CZcams . My buddies and I have done this on two Vettes. The first one was much harder because there was no good info like your video out there. The second one was much easier since we knew what to expect. I will say this, probably the hardest part was disassembly. 50 year old rusted parts are truly stuck. The other thing is one of the guys in my group is a machinist of your skill level. That really helps with making tools and making sure the tolerances are correct. If nothing else this video may convince some people that it would be worth it to just buy a new trailing arm and bearing assembly rather than attempt a rebuild. The trick with the fishing line was awesome, wish I had known that. The other thing is the camera work here was great and it really showed things in a detailed manner . Thanks to both of you, I have watched all the videos both of you guys have made and it has been a great help in rebuilding my 72 Vette. Just finished putting a 383 stroker with a Tremec TKX in it , wish you had made a video on that before I did it, again lot of videos but not the detail you always have. Thanks
Thanks. Rebuilding trailing arms is definitely a lot of work but you can save some money doing it yourself. I hope this is the last time I have to do it. My car was originally an automatic. I changed it out for a Muncie 4 speed. I wish I would have gone with a Tremec.
Another great video! As far as universal joints, on my 76 I tried both zerk and non zerk. Replacing them around 5000 miles. Just couldn’t get the grease to all four cups during a service with the zerk type. I’d make sure on installation they were packed yet develop get a squeak from one of the four universals leaving a stop light. That’s a clean Corvette you have, enjoy it!
I think the problem with zerk type ujoints is sometimes it's hard to get a grease gun on the zerk. If they are not greased, they don't last any longer than the non greaseable ujoints. I always pack the ujoint before I install them. My car is close to being finished. Thanks
Amazing Video! Great to see you two teaming up on this rebuild project. So much great info here. 👍🏼
Thanks. We had a good time making the video. Luis did an awesome job with the camera. The video would not have been as good without his help and input.
Super cool 👍👍👍👍
Thanks
Ah, the 1956 Lotus Eleven, a car I got to know from FH4, beautiful speed machine
Definitely a cool car.
I don't understand why trailer manufacturers either don't include spare tires or spare tire mounts, especially on single axle trailers. My car hauler came with the mount installed bit I had to purchase the spare seperately. Doesn't make sense why a spare isn't included with every trailer.
They want to make their trailer as cheap as possible to get people to buy them and then they can make more money selling accessories. Like when I bought my Harley in 2008. I paid $18k for it and then spent about $5k more for chrome. I will never do that again. The chrome looks like junk today. For what they charge for those parts, the quality is not very good.
Mark, great stuff here. Thank you. Im also in FL 71 C3 convertible wondering if you ever installed the electric fans? Hows yours run in dead of Fl summer?
Where are located in Fl? I have a 195 thermostat in my car. It runs around 198 to 203 unless I get stuck in traffic in the summer, then it will go as high as 210. I have never had it overheat. I have an aluminum radiator and electric fans for the car but I don't know if or when I will install them.
Whow, that's sharp!!!!
Where do you recommend getting the fiberglass mesh sheets?
Cool

Did you add the vinegar to the rust solution or dump the rust solution and use all vinegar?
