Nature Aquariums by Johnny Johnson | Bringing Nature Home |
My name is Johnny Johnson and I've been aquascaping for just over 10 years. In the beginning of my journey, I was like most people starting out with small setups and fake decor in them. Not long after that I quickly learned about nature aquariums and the creator behind them Takashi Amano, who invented the planted aquarium. After admiring his works and reading everything I could about him, I quickly saw the world through Amanos eyes and loved the idea of bringing a piece of nature into our homes. Back in 2015 I decided I wanted to share my work with the world which led to me creating my CZcams Channel JJ Aquariums, which I still upload Weekly till this day. Through my CZcams I showed my journey through aquascaping as I got better and better with each setup I did. My goal is to bring nature aquarium's more into the US, and to open eyes to the real world of nature.

I know this is an old topic and video. But I just saw it and thought I could clear up some things about AmGuard. It works and works well if you use it correctly and for what it's actually designed for. Amguard is for temporary fixes and delays the toxicity of Ammonia. It converts very toxic Ammonia NH3 to a safer Ammonium NH4. Your total Ammonia test kits like API master will still see both as total Ammonia. Most test kits that test for total Ammonia won't see any difference whether its NH3 or NH4. So you'll still see the NH3 and NH4 totals. Don't use a total Ammonia test to see if this is working. Your total ammonia test kits will continue to show high toxic levels of ammonia even if it has been converted to the safer NH4. Only tests that individually test for NH3 or NH4 will see it happen. But Ammonium NH4 is far less toxic than Ammonia NH3. Your nitrifying bacteria that eats ammonia eats either kind. So adding this during an ammonia spike will give the bacteria established/establishing time to eat it while the NH4 is less likely to immediately kill tank inhabitants. The problem is this is not a permanent fix. In a few days (depending on pH and hardness and temp) the safer NH4 not consumed by bacteria will eventually go back to being the very toxic NH3 again. So AmGuard will do you no good if you don't have the bacteria colonies of the nitrogen cycle fully working. This does not help you either if your habits (overstocking, overfeeding, too infrequent water changes, etc.) continue. You'll just be daily piling more and more and more NH3 ammonia into the system. But if you have properly cycled your tank and your bacteria are present, and ammonia and nitrites are present, they will eat the NH4 this product makes just as well as the toxic NH3. Thereby both the types of the Ammonia is converted by bacteria to less hazardous Nitrites which can be removed by the second stage bacteria established in your tank which will turn it to even less toxic Nitrates. You can get rid of Nitrates by changing your water regularly and/or having heavily planted tanks. Plants love Nitrates. So does invasive algae. This is why you really need to monitor your Ammonia/Ammonium, Nitrite, Nitrate levels as it's a good indicator of whether your bacteria in your tank is working well or perhaps even non-existent. Know the Nitrogen cycle and whether your tank is within those parameters and you can avert a lot of disasters to both fish and plants. The way the Nitrogen cycle works in an aquarium should be required reading before setting up any tank. You'll only be a successful fish keeper if your tank is cycled. Too much info to go into here. This product gives your bacteria colonies a couple of days or so to consume any excess NH3 Ammonia that this product has converted to NH4 Ammonium. But if you keep producing more NH3 than your bacteria colony can catch up to, you'll still have high ammonia daily accumulating on top of what you already had. This product is just going to give you a couple of days to solve your real problem of why you have too much toxic ammonia. If you don't have the nitrifying bacteria going yet, add a product like Stability that will put large quantities of good bacteria into your water and will kick-start the Nitrogen cycle going which eats excess ammonia or ammonium. I use AmGuard as a life saving measure when I notice an ammonia spike, or when certain fish suddenly show signs of distress. I dope the tank with the recommended dosage of AmGuard and my fish are usually given a few days reprieve while I find out why I got an Ammonia spike in the first place. (Unseen dead snails or fish or rotting uneaten food that went behind rocks or plants are sometimes a cause of this.) Have AmGuard on hand for a quick rescue of your fish from ammonia spikes. Just know you still have to solve the cause of the Ammonia spike. Sometimes changing 50% of the water before then adding Amguard can be a real lifesaver. Also be aware that some fish like some Corydoras or Loaches or cold water fish (goldfish) can react badly to even helpful chemicals in their water. Bottom dwellers are often in the worst areas of Ammonia or low oxygen in a tank and can be the first to show signs of distress or pass away. Use airstones or pumps to be sure the CO2 at the top of the tank is being well evacuated and good oxygen is being taken into the water and moved about the tank. Sometimes water chemical problems and the products that dope them can also cause oxygen deficiency in the water. Keep a good water circulation always to solve that. Your top water surface in almost all cases is where that oxygen and CO2 is exchanged. Air stone bubbles do not add oxygen to the water as some people think. They are to be used only to move water from the bottom to the top of the tank. Of course a pump is more efficient if it doesn't have so much force as to disturb the inhabitants. AmGuard can also remove Chlorine and Chloramine although other products are often better at it. Many cities dump both chlorine and Ammonia into their tap water (Chloramine). However, the Seachem product called Prime does neutralize it much better and is a bit better at providing other features for conditioning water to make it safe for fish. Some cities still put heavy metals into their tap water to kill bad organisms although most don't do this any longer. Other chemicals like fluoride which is a poison to living creatures could also be added. These often kill fish and plants (and people over time). Don't use Amguard as a complete substitute for anti-chlor chemicals. Products like Prime that handle a multitude of things do a better job for that.
Hey JJ. In the manuals for each of these brighty series fertilizers, ADA mentions that its acceptable to double or triple the standard dose according to plant mass. Is that something you do or do you more or less stick to 1 pump per 20L throughout the tank's life cycle? Thanks.
Yes but if you pair with ada soil I would start with a normal dose rate

Hi, great content! Really enjoy your videos. I just received my DOOA System Paluda 60 and noticed one of the blue sponges is rock hard. Don't think it's usable. I hope it can get soft once put in water? I know it was sitting at the store warehouse for over 2 years but never expected to get some faulty items. Also the Wabi Kusa Mats seem pretty dry and maybe lost their thickness. I wanted to ask is the mat material quite soft or hard? The outer frame (edges) feel very hard like you can throw it like ninja stars. Wanted to know if they are faulty as well, and if you think they won't retain water as supposed to? Thanks for your help!
Ya if you soak them they should go back to normal
@@jjaquariums Are you referring to the blue sponge? (one of them is rock solid. The other one still has air in it's nylon wrap so it protected it from drying out I guess).
@@chaidiamonds yes blue
@@jjaquariums Thanks! What about the Wabi Kusa Mat? Are they supposed to be hard or a bit soft? (also lost some thickness). Will they still retain water like supposed to or should I ask for replacement? Sorry for all the questions, this was super expensive and felt a bit disappointed.
@chaidiamonds ya same deal water over time but it's definitely hard at first

My comment is very late but wanted to touch on this. You used to do 2 x 50% water changes every week which means you changed 100% of your water weekly? Why? Besides Monte Carlo is a root feeding plant. Dosing liquid ferts in the water column does very little to nothing in helping MC but would be really good at blooming your algae. I clearly understand why your MC was turning brown.
