I want to know some tips if you dont have a previous experience in legal assistant. I have 3+ years in customer service and what questions do they ask during the interview?

I was looking for entry level experience in IT and I landed a job with a Houston-based PI law firm back in january. I was so happy, as a legal IT assistant. It is a family owned law firm, and my boss was very nice, I respect her and thank her for the opportunity. I was an assistant for their IT director, and they brought in a third guy to take over the report generating which was offshored to some guy in india. The man is like pushing 40 and I am 27 here with little to no experience. I felt pretty little and felt like I could have done more, but my director just does not have time wearing the supervisor hat. I was terminated this past Friday. The schedule flexibility thing, well sad to say, I lost two loved ones while working there and I had to take 2 bereavements which is something I believe it is attributed to my termination. I missed like 5 days of work in total, and it sucks having to go to work with that chip on your shoulder. While I was here looking at my emails to see if there is any assistance around the office, I saw how legal assistants were hauling ass which was pretty cool. I would have never thought I would work in law, but yeah these girls were pushing it. It is true, you play with law, you have deadlines, people's cases are in your hands, and if you botch something, while it is a bit tough, it does make the law firm look bad because of your mistakes and there is usually 0 tolerance. I got along pretty well with staff, and I wish I could have been able to support them by learning and being delegated more stuff, but while I do own some fault in some things, the director was just not giving me much to work with. The last email I read this past friday just read that my reason for termination was not developing skills, like bro HOW!!!??? I spent 6 months there and just drove hoping for the best every day. The man only gave me one report to change some SOLs in Neos which was the firm's software, and he showed me how to change some templates for some POA forms. Like that is cool, like give me some stuff like that. I don't blame the guy, but he does have a lot of burden which is why I was hired, but nope. NADA. I still feel thankful for the 6 months of experience, currently I am looking for another job and I was thinking of hopping to the next law firm with this experience, while I did not work in intake or cases, I wonder if this could perhaps help me pivot. Having 0 things to do just made my days very psychological, being stuck inside that office while everyone was working sucked balls. But yeah I guess that is the path of every recent grad, get that half assed job and move on. There is indeed a lot of prestige, and I was always very happy to help and assist the girls with their computers as I consider customer service my strongest skill. The termination letter did say that I was very good employee to work with which is totally something they need to recognize. Sneaky sons of snuck an exit interview with me and I was very blunt and polite with my feedback, and I noticed the girl (she the lawyer's right hand) was a bit upset, like I have good potential, they just simply did not know how to leverage it, so back they to the neverending zoom interviews. Should I continue working in law?

Best tip is to be genuine and hones. Always show high interest in learning. Share how you plan to apply your skills into the law firm daily tasks. Show confidence, even without experience and always ask questions. (You can CZcams legal assistant interview Q&A) Always look for red flags. Not all law firms are the same.

You are so right about making sure to over communicate. I added a confirmation email to our system after a filing but later on by supervisor said I should’ve told her about that email bc I actually needed to add the PDF I missed in that email too

I just started as a admin assistant for a financial law firm. We don’t have cases rather we have customers ….. but all those tips you just gave will help me so much. I’ve been having such a hard time adjusting and been fucking up a lot and your video has helped me out so much

That's a long interview with a lot of people for a legal assistant position. I've seen large firms or corporations do things like that. It really adds a lot of pressure and stress to the interviewee. Really, imo, they should have you interview with no more than two people, and then if you're a finalist, perhaps interview with a couple more people. I hate questions like "what was a time when you have a stressful situation and what did you do about it?" Every day in the legal field consists of stressful situations! LOL. As for accepting an offer, I would suggest asking about benefits, as you mentioned, specifically (1) health insurance plans - what are the premiums and copays for employees and families (they may say insurance is free, for example, then you find out the cost is enormous to add family/children, and when does your insurance go into effect; and is there an HSA? Are there other benefits such as life insurance, short and long term disability, tuition reimbursement? (2) 401(k) - Does the firm contribute and how much, every pay period or at the end of the year? (3) As for salary, is it starting pay with a chance to receive an increase after a probationary period? Are there bonuses? Some firms offer bonuses when a case settles, and/or at the end of the year.

I was a Legal Secretary/Assistant for over 20 years. I enjoyed watching your video and think you give good advice. Your comments about prioritizing and organization are on point. One thing that I did was, in spite of the calendar we kept on the computer, I kept a back up calendar on my desk and everything I put on the electronic calendar went on my handwritten calendar. People might think that's redundant (and it is!) but many times it saved the day. I loved it when you said to take a note pad & pen with you & write down what is needed when you're given a task. So true!! You gave really good advice! Also, having those document templates will save your life. Recreating everything all the time would take many, MANY hours. Did you take a Legal Assistant/Secretary course, or do on the job training? A combination of both is what I did. I would love to talk to you!!

I'm a tax associate for real estate lenders and my job is literally the same as a paralegal which is great because I eventually want to work as a paralegal for real estate attorney's. I'm in school now for legal studies. The only thing that is definitely is we know what our schedule will be.

I'm in the US Navy as an electrician but I'm switching my job to Legalman which is a Navy paralegal for JAG officers. I'll be required to take paralegal studies on the military side my school also requires me to study civilian paralegal law as well. I feel like the military law field is much more strict and on the book than civilian. If you have any advice I'd love it.
