3 Steps to Protect your Garden from Cold Weather, Frost & Freeze!
Today I’m going to show you what I do to protect my vegetable garden from cold weather, snap frost, and even a snap freeze!
Depending on where you live in the world, the fall and spring (and sometimes even winter) can bring surprise frost and freeze warnings. Most vegetables we tend to plant in the fall or spring, generally like cool weather. However, some of those plants need you to protect them from an unexpected or early spell of cold weather! Whether you have young seedling plants in your garden, or tender cool weather plants that can be damaged by frost and freeze, I’m going to give you my fail safe approach to using whatever frost protection I have available to protect my garden from surprise cold weather, frost, and even freeze!
It's a simple 3 step approach, and it takes all the stress out of a surprise frost or freeze so you can get your tender garden plants protected fast with what you have!

      Hi there! I’m not sure which you’re asking if it’s how to preserve it for eating, or if it’s how to get it through the winter? If it’s how to preserve it, you can check out this video here that I did on Waze I like to do it czcams.com/video/OE3_r5QT7-8/video.htmlsi=KAtT3WGP6gEb0YbF If you’re asking about overwintering, if you don’t get hard ground freezes, there’s no reason to take it out of the ground. However, over the years, I always take a few pieces and put them in pots and bring them inside over the winter just as the odd deep freeze like we had in 2021. So far that is worked really well for me. Hope that helps!

    Wow! I thought I was supposed to harvest when the leaves died back. I have some ginger I’m going to plant today ( I know it’s late) but I found it wrapped in newspaper stored in the garage since last summer. It has beautiful sprouts on it but the rhizome isn’t firm. Just thought I’d see what happens. Several small pieces were quite obviously dried up so I’m not planting those.

    • @TexasGardenDoc
      @TexasGardenDoc Před 8 dny

      Hi there! You can absolutely wait until the leaves die completely back, for me we tend to go from no freeze at all to hard freeze and so I always just go ahead and beat nature to the punch! There’s nothing wrong with harvesting early though even if you want to pick small pieces off your plant throughout the season. Although harvesting throughout the season, you have to be careful to make sure you don’t pull off too many of the younger roots or you won’t get all the way around. Absolutely a great idea to plant them! Worst case you get a young ginger harvest before the end of the year. No sense in letting any of that go to waste!

    • @twinfin8571
      @twinfin8571 Před 8 dny

      @@TexasGardenDoc . I didn’t know the leaves could be used so I’ll be making some changes in the future to take advantage of the leaves. It turns out the rhizome is firm. It’s just the skin that’s all wrinkled and separated from the rhizome. Or, the fact that I put them in a bowl with a bit of water last night may have firmed them up. In any case, the roots grew over night! I’m excited to grow these. They are from last years crop which was the first time I ever planted ginger and they were organic store bought. I totally forgot I saved some to plant this year. Opps! But, they’re going out today. I want to make your ginger beer! Thanks. You have a lot of videos I want to watch!

      @@TexasGardenDoc . I have last years ginger planted. It suffered through a long winter in the garage and then a hot spring and summer neglected. The four pieces that survived looked very anxious to grow so I’m giving them a chance! I have ginger in the freezer but none fresh. I hope to do a better job growing and storing this year. I’ll bring at least one pot in over the winter this year. Looking forward to making that ginger beer. It looked very delicious! I make ginger brandy.

    • @TexasGardenDoc
      @TexasGardenDoc Před 6 dny

      Oh! Ginger, Brandy sounds delicious! It definitely can be more difficult to grow when you have to overwinter it. I could probably try to overwind her mind and get more yielded out of it, but for me, it’s a lot of work and I don’t have a lot of space overwinter to protect it. So I just leave it in the garden That works, but it doesn’t work for everybody, especially if you live somewhere where it’s very cold. It can definitely survive a single hard freeze or maybe a few that are spaced out or don’t last very long. It sounds to me like you’re doing just fine and on the right track!

    Never ever start with GMO ginger from the store. There is absolutely zero point to base hour whole crop off an engineered far less nutrient Rich and less flavor fruit root or vegetable. Source it properly if you want the true benefits ginger or any other plant !! If u want them gmos then by all means do u. I refuse

    • @TexasGardenDoc
      @TexasGardenDoc Před 11 dny

      I would completely agree with that statement. However, I have no source that I can find that shows any gmo ginger ever being produced. It would be very helpful. If you could send me a link showing what egg companies are producing GMO ginger as I can’t find any. Definitely don’t want to be using GMO‘s for any reason. However, I simply can’t find a source stating that there are any GMO Ginger products being produced or sold so any documentation you could send me would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

    • @itcantbetruebutis7778
      @itcantbetruebutis7778 Před 11 dny

      @TexasGardenDoc you have to find the country of origin. Then the producer/grower. I'm not saying I have seen a gmo sticker on ginger per say, but garlic for instance grown in the far east and other places is genetically altered and contains high levels of metals and toxins. I buy garlic from local farms and or markets where I know where it's coming from. The gmo's have literally gotten way outta hand and they want us eating lab produced food and believe me they are pushing it into a supermarket near us...

    • @TexasGardenDoc
      @TexasGardenDoc Před 10 dny

      Oh, I absolutely agree with that! It doesn’t even have to be GMOs, just the quality of the food alone, and the lack of care for nutrient density and quality is astounding! Everyone should always do their due diligence to make sure that they are growing something that is worth growing. I’m pretty fortunate in that the grocery store I shop from has 90% of its vegetables grown very near and almost all of them here in the United States. Many years ago there was a farm about 15 miles away from me. It was growing corn for dog food and it was GMO corn, I had to stop growing corn because it was cross pollinating and I didn’t want anything to do with it since gone and there’s no one in my area anywhere near that will be the first year I’m growing corn for real again.

    • @TexasGardenDoc
      @TexasGardenDoc Před 24 dny

      Hi there! First of all there are no stupid questions that is a fact! Also congratulations on starting your gardening journey as well. There will be ups and downs losses and gains but in the end it will be well worth it. I promise you! To answer your question directly, the best way to determine the difference is if you take soil from the same pot And and damp it evenly. Then grab a handful in each hand and squeeze just one of your hands when you’re done the the soil and the hand that you squeezed is moist, but not wet the soil you have not squeezed is wet. Generally, if you can squeeze a handful of the soil and water drips out, it’s considered wet and not moist. If it feels damp to touch and squeeze it and very little to no water comes out at all, it’s considered moist or damp. I hope that helps if you have any other questions ask away. I’m always here to help!

      That’s great to hear that yours has roots already! I’m not sure what you’re asking me about garlic though. I have used garlic place near the ginger before and it seems to help a very little bit to help things sprout. It’s really hard to say for sure as I only see an increase of a couple of days maximum. Hope that helps and if you have any other questions, just let me know!

    • @TexasGardenDoc
      @TexasGardenDoc Před 28 dny

      I absolutely agree with you! I actually tried for four years over and over and over again using every single method I’ve read about or found online. I got a few to start sprouts but never got them to grow if they did they didn’t grow long and they died. One of the roadside bought way back then I forgotten about it sprouted just sitting on the counter, so I thought let me cut this thing up and see if it will grow. That was the first time I ever successfully ginger. After that, I tested it a few more times to see how it worked, and each year I was able to get a plant to grow no problem from it. Have you had a chance to try this method yet? if so, are you actually getting sprouts that you can plant? Let me know what’s happening and maybe I can help you out. I know that those water methods and all kinds of other methods you can see online work for people they just never worked for me. I think it has something to do with the ginger in my area and how much stuff they put on it to keep it from sprouting. Let me know. I’d love to help out if I can. And I’d love to see you be successful with it!

    Excessive heat in Phoenix last year killed all my citrus, even with a good shade cloth. Had a mister but maybe overwatered.

      @TexasGardenDoc Před měsícem

      We struggled to last year pretty badly with heat. Where I keep mine stay shaded pretty well during the summer, but I was having to water it every single day just to keep it going. It dropped most of its fruit and a lot of leaves, but I was able to get it through. Arizona has a whole different story though! It’s so dry there. I imagine it’s really hard to keep things watered, it’s possible it was watered, but it’s probably more likely the heat stress just was too much for it. That really stinks. What all were you growing?

    I will try to grow ginger with your instructions. Have you heard of the Prickly Lettuce? It is considered a weed but if you look online it says it is used for so many medicinal uses. It is amazing. I started planting it all over my yard as I saw one popping up then I dug it up and planted it in a pot and then where I wanted it in the yard.

I also read an article that says that Prickly lettuce is like opium for pain relief. Just think, they don't allow marihuana plants, and people don't even know there is Prickly lettuce right in their backyard and they are killing it as a weed yearly. Maybe if I just mail you the root. If interested let me know.

      We’ve been so conditioned since World War II to really focus on green grass. It kind of became a status assemble and people stopped growing food and allowing things that were always kind of known to be helpful medicinal in their yard to grow because it didn’t look pretty. It’s all very strange! I love the idea of that this weekend. I’m gonna look around and see if we have any growing now here just to make sure and I’ll let you know. Thank you!

      @@TexasGardenDoc Yes you are right about everything you said. If you need any I could take one of mine and just get the root and send it to you. I think the Prickly Lettuce is beautiful. They get very tall up to 7 feet. I have started making tea with it. I also let the Pokeweed grow and I have 2 tall ones. They get even taller than the Prickly Lettuce so 2 of th em grow next to each other so I put some string between them so they can survive a storm. They used to make ink with the berries. It also is a beneficial plant.

    • @TexasGardenDoc
      @TexasGardenDoc Před 28 dny

      Now pokeweed we have a lot of! When I was a very very young man, my grandmother used to have us go out and collect the very young and tender leaves from the plants and bring them back for and she would boil them up changing the water seven or eight times, and then scrambled eggs. Mix them in with the greens and freeze them in small butcher paper packets. We eat a lot of that when I was a kid actually! If I understand correctly, the underground roots can live up to 10 years or something crazy like that, but they are definitely prolific!

    What are the zones

    • @TexasGardenDoc
      @TexasGardenDoc Před měsícem

      That’s a great question! The zones that I’m speaking about are called the USDA hardiness zones. They are basically a reference, mainly for perennials, that lets us know our average first and last frost date along with our average lowest temperature. There are 13 zones that stretch from the northern part of the US starting at one and going all the way to the south that ends with zone 13. the idea is to let us know when the last frost is and the first frost date is so that we can decide that when to start planting outside, but also when to expect protect plants that may need protection from cool weather. This also helps us to pick varieties of plants that will grow well in our area, but really on the coldest temperature. Most countries have some version of this that’s available to the public. Are you really only use this as a general guideline over the years I’ve learned that those dates and temperatures have changed quite a bit. I hope that helps and if you have any other other questions, just let me know!

    the reason why there are less transported is because of the thin skin, they are very vulnerable.

    • @TexasGardenDoc
      @TexasGardenDoc Před měsícem

      That makes complete sense! It’s one of the other reasons why I think so many homegrown vegetables, particularly things like tomatoes and cucumbers are so different than what you find in the store. Everything that we buy commercially has to be shipped multiple times and move multiple times, so thick skin is definitely a plus in regard to that. Great insight thank you so much for sharing that!

    I believe all Meyer Lemons are grafted. Keeping the sour orange with the thorns cut is helpful so they won't drain the energy from the grafted tree. Do you find that to be true too? My Meyer Lemon nor my Grapefruit tree has thorns but the non graft has huge thorns, so I keep them cut down to the graft.

    • @TexasGardenDoc
      @TexasGardenDoc Před měsícem

      It is 100% correct that all Meyer lemons are grafted lemons! I personally have several branches on these two lemons that do have thorns, however they did grow above the graft. Technically that should not be so I’m not entirely sure why that is, but I only cut those back off for shaping. It does stand, however that anything that is growing below the graph will be taking some nutrients and energy from the plant so I would say in most cases unless you’re just looking to help shape it and you don’t mind the thorns it’s definitely worth removing those branches Hope that helps!
