    I really enjoyed your video. I also like that you mentioned that being more limited with art supplies or free supplies boosts your creativity which I completely agree with. I have a sculpture degree and felt many of my best pieces were from cheap materials and materials other students thew away or gifted to me because they saw I recycled. Your video is very refreshing especially because you don't just critisize the materials and instead find creative alternative for other things you get at the dollar store. I use the ceramic white plates for pallets which otherwise would be very expensive at an art supply store. I also look into kitchen and home supplies.

    OK! Wow, here I am half an hour later, after trying the make ugly art exercise! I tried painting the tree outside my window, which I've done before - I get overwhelmed with tree painting, but gave it a go with permission to make ugly art. And yeah, it went ugly a lot, and was uncomfortable but I reminded myself that this is the ugly art exercise, so it's Ok, and I kept going, and I finished it. I learnt stuff, like this time I was painting it as the sun went down, so I started with having a lot of white in between leaf patches but later added darks in the white areas, and that was uncomfrtable - fear that the dark would botch it up, etc. but the finished piece looks pretty nice, actually. And I agree with what you say that if I look at it after a couple days or tomorrow, it's going to look much better. Already my ugly floral looks better when I went to use my watercolour pad to start on the ugly tree exercise! thanks again, Kezia, all hail ;)

    Really enjoyed this video, your presentation, voice, tone, expressions are very warm and supportive, thank you Kezia! I just got up from practising a loose floral piece and finding it looks ugly, but trying to appreciate my courage for showing up and doing that difficult thing of painting ithout reference, going with the flow, Trying to paint. But I admit I was discouraged a little, so when your video showed up on my YT page I clicked at once. I have heard of this idea of making ugly art on purpose, to loosen up, let go of expectations, but I haven't actually tried it. I want to now.

    My approach to abstract painting is deeply personal. I always paint my feelings with my feelings. The paintings may look busy, chaotic, cluttered but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel - a glimmer of hope and optimism. Every colour, line, shape, texture means something to me. I use these elements as a language to convey my own story. It’s never just random colours and shapes. That’s briefly how I explain my art but I also ask viewers to find their own interpretation. The one thing that I noticed is that people don’t take their time to look at art and see it a little deeper than what’s on the surface. We’re talking seconds not even minutes. That goes for the Mona Lisa too! Thank you for sharing your video.

    So like, to me, in case of your abstract art, it would mean you tell me if certain colours carry emotional meaning to you, or textures etc. and then I look at the painting trying to see you in it

    I always look at an Art piece before I read the tag ..I prefer that the piece speaks for itself...Then the written or spoken story adds to it..I am not fond of the explanation first..that is asking us to be kind instead of honest. (not that honesty is UNkind..) There is something bigger in a connection purely from the work shown to the observer. Something that can get muddled when the story is the factor that makes the connection. For instance: Van Gogh..."Sunflowers" When I worked in London's West End, I would go to the National Gallery and I remember standing in front of that painting..It hit me hard. I laughed and cried at the same time. Later, I learned about his torment. The painting spoke it clearly...not the story... But, That is only my opinion..I see most people reading the tag then looking at the painting..They prefer to know.

  • @alison5009
    @alison5009 Před měsícem

    Thank you! love the idea of connection. Not just to your art, but to another person! I think people enjoy a work even more when they know its backstory. That’s just my opinion, amateur artist here. 🙂

    Molly Bang's Picture This is recommended reading! What I enjoy so much about comp is that it connects all manfiestations of Gestalt, including all art. It's difficult not to think of Kandinsky's synaesthetic comparisons to sound. At that point, the question becomes not "how to guide the viewer's eye" anymore. Or, "how to convey your intention best." That's allowing a nonexistent third party in when we should be listening to our subtle responses to what we are putting down. It's hard-won discovery. Effectiveness or truthfulness seems like a better word - as soon as one leans into audience and pleasantry, it dies. Just a thought. Alchemical and hermetical symbology is graphic representation of fundamental reality. Why is the symbol of the sun/self a circle with a dot in the center, if not because the egoic and non-egoic poles of the psyche, proximity and periphery, are to be seen in relation, make a whole? What is the lemniscate if not the simplest and clearest depiction of Enantiodromia, among other things . . . Mostly thinking of Jung in this case. So yey, composition. Woohoo.

    Another great one! I hope you keep em coming. Can’t seem to get to the downloads without paying for some sort of subscription so a bit sad. I will just watch your video over and over and write it all down. More in depth videos of each of your points with examples of how to use them in designing or composing a painting can’t be repeated enough for me. Thank you! To finish or not to finish… you made me laugh. I often wonder and feel the same and make myself push through or put it aside and wait for the muse to tell me to pick it up and finish it. Maybe it is like sending your babies off to college??? You want them to go and be successful, yet you will miss them terribly. Or what if you mess up the painting right at the END?! All that time and work… lost. I think this is my fear. So I say “ You don’t like it the way it is unfinished so how can it be worse?” And it is ONLY paper. The time is practice and experience for the next one so all good. Now get it DONE!”. The other fear is STARTING! making that first mark on pure white paper! BUT there is no adventure without the first step…. ❤ no guts no glory.
