The Search for the USS Samuel B Roberts - Part 2
This video is the second of two which detail the efforts to locate the Destroyer Escort Samuel B Roberts, which was lost in battle during the Battle off Samar on October 25, 1944. She was lost along with other members of its task force, Taffy 3: the USS Johnston (DD), USS Hoel (DD), and USS Gambier Bay (CVE).
Under the command of her captain, LCDR Robert W. Copeland, the ship with just her two 5-inch guns, triple torpedo tubes, and smaller caliber guns helped fight off the Japanese Center Force which was led by the super-battleship Yamato. Suffering ferocious attacks from Taffy 3 and its aircraft, the Japanese forces suffered heavy casualties and eventually withdrew in what many historians describe as one of the greatest last stands in naval history.
This video shows the technology, method, and patience required to find what is now the deepest shipwreck ever discovered and surveyed. Part two of this two-part series covers the dive by pilot Victor Vescovo (former Commander, US Navy) and sonar operator Jeremie Morizet of France looking for, and then finding, the wreck of the "Sammy B." Remarkably, after selecting the 'best guess' heading of where the ship might be after reaching the seafloor, the ship was found after only about fifteen minutes. The sidescan sonar that Jeremie is using is a prototype long-range sidescan sonar which can operate up to 11,000 meters - a first in submersible technology.
As with previous videos, be forewarned, the video is more or less uncut and there can be rather long stretches of very little activity other than slowly moving across and scanning the seafloor, but that is what is really involved in exploration. Exploration is not an action film, it is slow, painstaking work which this video will show. However, the excitement when you actually find something like this in the vast, dark expanse of the bottom of the ocean is extraordinary.
Enjoy this video, which shows - as it happened - the discovery and survey of the deepest shipwreck ever discovered: the USS Samuel B Roberts.

This video chronicles the full, second and "survey" dive of the USS Johnston with mission specialist and historian Parks Stephenson. Mission Specialist Shane Eigler and I discovered the major part of the shipwreck in Part One, but had almost exhausted our battery power so we had to ascend after just an initial pass at the wreck. On this second dive, we would attempt to get closer, make multiple...

to these men, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. notice, you wont find a biden voting democrat on this side of youtube.... they want to destroy everything these men gave their lives for.
WOW someone used Good camera
Can’t the sub attach floats to the wreck and when it surfaces can’t they tow it to shallow waters???
Isnt titanic the deepest wreck to be recorded. I haven't started the video yet lol but if this comment disappears it's because I learned the truth and I would just seem stupid
so funny
these fish are so beautiful. i hope their lives are happy down there
Why was this on a Forge Labs playlist
I see straight through this rich weirdo Victor vescovo. Guy spent $40 million plus just to feed his ego in a craft that he himself didn’t even build.
Love you guys. …but you sure love those slow motion walking shots :)
my thing is who funds this and why
Duct tape and cardboard would have saved you a lot more money and you would have been able to fit more paying passengers
His team does all the work and this nerd takes all of the glory. I see straight through this fake nice guy.
I really can’t stand this guy. I see straight through him. James Cameron beat him to the challenger deep though 😘 and I don’t like that liberal goof either. There’s really not any type of innovation that’s happened here. They’ve known how to go that deep for a long time now. You need a titanium sphere with a life support system inside wnd syntactic foam to offset the weight. That’s really essentially all. lol simple engineering. This guy just needs validation. Someone tell Him he’s the greatest explorer of all time before he has a nervous breakdown. All of these rich old men are really horrible people. They put on a front like they’re such nice guys and doing this to push forward humanity and innovate. In reality they’re the biggest narcissists on planet earth and want recognition. I don’t even want to know what’s in this man’s closet. Nobody on earth but you is going to go through all of that trouble to get their sub classed either. I don’t blame James Cameron at all for not classing. His sub was still better than yours.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness
There are probably 2nd world war ships in the Mariana Trench . 35000 feet . There was a hell of a lot of battles around Guam .
Knock off the gender neutral B.S. by referring to the crew as people. They were MEN, crewMEN. WTH? Is man a dirty word now?
get therapy
Thank you boys of Sammy B

Look at all the “not inspirational” white men!
Active depth charges just chilling there intact after 80 years.
Are those little things swimming around ciliates that are bigger?
Stockton Rush: We use this game controller. Victor Viscovo: So you have chosen death. Hamish Harding : I'm just a billionaire without a clue
The DSV Limiting Factor is owned by Gabe Newell, the founder and president of Valve Corp. which owns the gaming platform Steam. Many people know him as Gaben.
Hello from Guam 🇬🇺
God rest the soul of the guy who went to see his mother on the back porch after she went down.
What’s the point in finding it? Just to say you can?
Back in the days i always thought subs had to be rounded just like military subs look like a cigarette. Now i've been told otherwise. Which tells me once again there cant be that enormous pressure down there.
Wow cool! Thanks guys!
Ur all such professionals because u all have fukin phones... Amazing
My wife's father was a gunnery officer on the Gambier Bay. He survived the sinking and spent a few days in a raft. The more I read about the battle, the more impressed I am by the heroism and sheer guts of these sailors. A good read is, "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors", by James Hornfischer.
Someone had to force Japan to use us reserve currency and build Toyotas for us and use Saudi oil as payment. That access to unlimited fiat currency creation power is being transferred from USA to Russia. This expedition is a last ditch effort to expand on some useful data before things go to pot .
That sub is probably the closest thing to a space ship that could be imagined.
Hold on, ocean gate will try to do the same
The pevious record holder USS Johnston had actually gone up against the monsterous Yamato in the Battle of Samar. Safe to say the US Navy got the last laugh when i came to Mighty Yammy
THIS IS WHERE IT ARE STARTED AND IT REALLY BEGAN. MUCH RESPECT TO ALL SIDE AND PEOPLE INVOVLED WITH THIS! THANK YOU!!! THERE IS GOING TO BE EVEN MORE GREAT DISCOVERY'S COMING. I CAN FEEL IT AND I AM VERY APPRECIATIVE TO WITNESS IT AND FOLLOW IT!!!
It is so nice to see you guys at work and the amazing footage of all of this. AMAZING!!
Are y’all still looking for the uss gambier bay wreck
It's being copied czcams.com/video/EjDPUMQ6Vfg/video.htmlsi=ov9GOPsX2D-mbAJ5
How did you guys even find the ship's number at 29:03? I can hardly see anything written on the bow of the ship
Shoutout to the USS Johnston and Commander Ernest E. Evans! There was never a badder man to command a U.S. naval vessel.
How many bravevsouls were lost on the ship ??
89 passed away, 120 were sitting in 3 life rafts for over 2 days and survived
insane typo
i wonder if the sonar they use is safe for the sea life
Now THAT is how you make a submarine :D
20,700 feet my god that’s deep
Thank God they are the depth they are because many war-grave wrecks are being illegally salvaged and are disappearing from the sea floor altogether in some cases.
12:00 I have gone back at least three times to watch that shrimp swim. Those little legs or swimmers, whatever the little bits are that are moving around are so cool. I have watched a few hours worth of these videos today and I love how much they involve the local scientist or just local people in the missions. Super cool to see them take a Chan on the first ever manned mission to a Chilean trench.
These are so cool, really lets you understand that hat the trenches look like
