I’m not a teacher, but since no one answered your question, I’ll just give you my understanding from my own experience and from discussing with various other martial artists. You can take it or leave it. Pivoting on the balls of the feet is more for evasion, as it causes your centerline to shift side to side. On the other hand, pivoting on the heels is better for close range power generation. Actually though, it isn’t really pivoting on the heels. It is better to pivot (for power generation) on the part of your foot slightly in front of your heel and directly under your ankle joint. Hope that helps

Fulcrum, basic leverage. Isn't it strange how people seem very slow to realize this..? I guess they think all the instructions for moving the body come at the time of birth. I've noticed that most anatomy books are lacking in several ways which a Buddhist-Taoist like me notices right away. A) no, or very little, reference to the tie over with other animal anatomy B) lack of description of functions of many bones, leading to C) a lack of any reference to sequencing of parts to move. On top of this, the average is sought, so that smaller bones aren't even illustrated, not to mention the fascial systems. Chen's great work and his teacher's seems to me to lie in matching the two Eastern and Western approaches to the body. Looking at the classics through the lens of the western biomechanics and discovering new ways of describing the functioning of the body. I have been quietly researching the same things too. I also learn directly from nature but this seems 'strange' to everyone I tell. If you become friends with animals and you ask them (in your mind) how they move, they will tell you..! Of course, you have to have eyes and the heart-mind perception to do it. Only shamans and deep meditators seem to know what I am talking about. But what Westerners forget is that we are animals too. Without leverage, our evolutionary ancestors wouldn't have learned to swim, or come out of the water. They wouldn't have learned to fly or to hunt. We are not just cousins to chimpanzees but related to all living organisms...! This is why we must be against the destruction of nature via 5-G. See Arthur Firstenberg's book.
