That was our mooring line and they do it for fun. This particularly seal was a rehabilitated seal and enjoyed playing with things. It’s not the same as rouge fishing nets and gear. If seals got caught up in rope like that you’d see them all over the place caught in crab pots.

Have you ever taken a hit by a boom? Or had a spinnaker pole come down from its tracks? No offence but I don’t have any intention of being left injured or swimming as the boat sails away from me. Give the roll of the boat and the forces involved trying to get a JSD back, I saw no harm in wearing my climbing helmet, which I wear when climbing the mast anyway. You wear a helmet on a high street because you’re expected to. You’re telling me not to wear one on a boat because it’s unexpected. At sea singlehanded you need to think for yourself and do what feels right or safe.

That’s fair praise from you! I remember seeing you talk in Bristol and always been fascinated by big wall climbing but never had the chance. But also by the adventures of Tilman. Joining up sailing and climbing has always been a dream.

I think it depends who made it. The first leader needs to attach to the bridle somehow but yes a knot doesn’t seem sensible give a splice would be stronger

Yeah fine although I made the mistake of inflating it to full pressure and it bubbled up. I think after a repair like this you can’t assume you’ll go to full pressure again. Those airdecks new can take 20PSI or more and that’s too much for a repaired one. I’d also recommend more glue than I had as it was a little sparse in places.

Yes it’s solid GRP. The whole boat is solid.

The problem with that method is that once you get a reasonable amount out, you have two lines, both with cones next to one another which could tangle. Then once you have over 30m out, you won’t be able to hold the line any longer. I don’t believe your method would work on a JSD. Perhaps a normal drogue but not a JSD.

How do you retrieve the trip line? If it comes back to the boat then it will foul the main rode. If you add a float then it will mean you firstly have to circle round to get it and secondly it’ll prevent the JSD sinking and performing its intended function.

@@ChasingContours The trip line is fastened to the weight (no float) and runs loosely back to the cockpit. It is deployed with the rode and never tangles. I've tested this at sea. The prospect of spending 2 hours retrieving a tripless rode is a dangerous disincentive to timely deployment.

Chris. How many times have you tested this method? I’m doing a webinar to the Ocean Cruising Club on 11th of January. There will be 100-200 long distance sailors watching. I’d be keen to recount your experience with a tripping line.

@@ChasingContours Once off Madeira in a 1m swell. Not ideal but waiting for a big blow test.. I also tested the Ocean Brake manufacture for towing resistance. The 12m yacht / 55hp Volvo managed 2.5 knots contradicting the total brake idea (rode should be able to suspend the yacht!). I tie off the bridles securely on 2 + 2 winches without chain plates.

⁠@@chriscooling4781I don’t think a 1m swell will be useful for testing retrieval. After a a big blow you’ll have 4-5m non breaking waves left over. That is the scenario to test. You use the swell to aid retrieval. I’m talking to Jeanne Socrates tomorrow to hear her accounts. She has used one in the southern ocean multiple times singlehanded.

Yes and that’s what I refer to. It should have ideally been spliced. I mention that mine was sent back to be spliced.

Easy enough to get at. It’s only sticky back insulation. I want the insulation to cover them though, otherwise they’ll generate condensation.

Yeah I recon if my glide stay exactly the same I’d have skimmed over it but did really want to risk it then land out on a sketch col with no ice gear 😆 In fact the flight down the M de Glacé was better I recon even though I didn’t intend it.

Tying a trip line to a 100m series drogue doesn’t work. It’s been tried. Firstly it can tangle the drogue and parachutes and if you put a float on it then it prevents the drogue from sinking between each wave. People have also tried reversing and ended up with it in their prop. When singlehanded that would be difficult.

@@ChasingContours Hello The retrieval line I use is a float line. As the parachutes and weights are well below. This float line also tells me where my drough is. Single handing does make it a little bit more complicated. But as I said slowly reversing. On my boat the throttle is very close from where I stand to retrieve.

Yes that can work for a single drogue but not a series drogue. It’s been tried and causes problems when deployed and also doesn’t aid retrieval due to the length. Mine is 130 cones and perhaps 80-100m in length although I’ve never measured it.

An old yeti one. There are now lighter weight versions but it is what I have and it’s in good condition.

I didn’t in the main saloon area, mostly because all the top sides are concealed within cabinets and I deemed it a low risk for heat retention and condensation. However, we never actually made it to Svarlbard in the end so when when do eventually go I’ll probably put insulation on the topsides when it is exposed sufficiently to reach. Which is not very often. Most is tucked away so far behind cabinets I wouldn’t be able to get to it properly. In the forecabin I did do the top sizes as that was simply a case of pulling down panels simple panels. But we don’t really heat up there anyway.

Hi. Yeah they are a small rigging company in England. They’re not a big outfit as the demand for series drogues is not huge. I have had dealings with them after I bought my drogue since I sent back my drogue to have the flemish loop removed and replaced with a splice since it is stronger. This was after I’d owned it for 3 years. They offered to do this free for any customer after Susie Goodall’s snapped in the southern ocean. That’s good service and it’s debatable whether is was needed. I did a video on that also in my channel. The guy to speak to there is Angus Coleman.

I think you are best to ask AD themselves. A 20L is tiny. I don’t think you’d get it all in. The rucksack I have is 38l and it has space for helmet also but 20L is much smaller. Why would you only use a 20L?

@@marianobarrera1074 have you considered the Run&Fly by Dudek and not using a reserve? If your flying non thermic evening air perhaps you don’t need to bother with a reserve.

Hi Steve. That would work initially but the drag just warps alone is significant, never mind a rope with a bite and backwards cones. After perhaps 30mm it would start to pull it out by itself strongly and then you risk it snagging itself as you trailing a large bite (loop). That sounds really hazardous. You really don’t want to paying out anything in case something gets trapped. You want to throw it over and get clear of it entirely. If it’s flaked into a bag carefully it will come out clean every time.

It’s just a little travel tripod which either my phone or gopro can attach to. A gorilla pod if I recall. It doesn’t have a gimbal to counter the motion.

@@ChasingContours Thanks for the answers. I love your vids as it is just pure sailing. I also love watching an airies in action. When ever we were sailing it was not just a way to steer the boat but a comfort to a tired crew.

What do you have in the way of heating?

@@ChasingContours I currently use my alcohol stove for cooking and heating …. which works short time … I plan to put a wood burning stove / oven in it with proper ventilation ( after I removed the old spray foam insulation from 1986, which seemed to have moulded over time ..,,, So removing the fake ceiling and replacing that old spray foam insulation will be a task…. but with your advice I hope I will improve the insulation and battle the condensation…… at least until I get my wood burning stove installed… that should battle some condensation

Strange. There are many accounts of modern yachts of various sizes using a JSD successfully including ourselves.
