    Thanks for the really helpful video. When I slap I get a clanging metal sound - I think as the string hits the fret. Is this normal or am I hitting the string too hard or at the wrong angle? Doesn't sound like the slap sound on any recordings! Can you help please - very frustrating/

  • @mortondavisproductions7578

    What bothers me is that the people who are teaching fretless bass playing on instruments that have the fret marks say that you should play right on the fret marks and that you should NOT play on the dots that appear in the middle of the bar. Number one: I play a fretless bass but there are NO fret marks, and I prefer this. I play on the dots, and it plays in perfect tune. I tune the instrument to a very fine tuner and NOT to a dot mark... so the dots on my instrument are exactly where get the exact note I want. So, my question is... why did some idiot place dots in the middle of the bar... why not remove those dots and place them on the side of the neck where they are visible while playing and place them exactly where the marked fret lines go... Am I missing something?

    This is true. When I used to play video games as a kid I did it because it was fun and when I couldn’t defeat the boss, I would go back and try to do it over and over again. I did it because it was fun and challenging. I think this is why I have good hand and eye coordination. Now I’m translating this into learning more bass techniques such as slap and that’s how I ended up here and also having fun playing my bass by playing along with bass tabs to my favorite songs over and over.

    For me, there is an aesthetic component to what we do as musicians. The sight of a bassist plugged into an vintage SVT, Acoustic 360 or Ampeg SVT while playing a quirky bass like a Gibson EB1 or an old P bass imparts a vibe that is necessary for the things I do. Nevertheless, tonight I’m playing and plugging into a direct box and using in ear monitoring. I don’t prefer it, but that’s what the people who are paying me want. This is a great video , and the lesson learned is that we must utilize the best of the new technology while incorporating the more modern ideas.

    What strings height above the frets is required for slap? I often see videos where the strings are almost lying on the frets and a sound is produced from almost the simplest touch. At the same time, I need to pull the string quite hard to string hit the fret. If I try to lower the string much lower, I get an unpleasant buzz sound.

    • @OnlineBassGuitar1
      @OnlineBassGuitar1 Před 15 dny

      I always go low but not super low. If the string isn't close enough to the neck you won't get enough of a crack on the tone. But going too low means the strings can't vibrate freely and you get buzz. The best solution is to take your bass to a shop for a set up. Tell them how you want it to sound, feel and play and they should be able to make that happen for you.

    I found that the P-Bass was more forgiving on technique issues I had early on. I hated my Jazz at first, because it felt like the Jazz bass called them out. Well, it did. I learned to adapt to and love both for different things. People will insist that the two instruments are similar, but they both make me play very differently. A Stingray and a Rickenbacker and a Warwick will make me play differently again. The Precision makes you a more conscientious player imo.

Solid explanation of roles, opportunities to add, and opportunities to detract from the overall song, and also how each part weaves in and fits with the other elements of a band. So good! I sing, and play keys and guitar, but I'm really just starting to work with different bands that have some interchange of players from time to time. I think this is really gonna help me figure out why some players seem to make the songs come alive easily, and help explain some of the problems I hear from time-to-time. My Barefaced cabs weigh maybe 25 pounds, Aggie Head maybe 4 pounds. It's really not that big of a deal. Bass amps will never die, nor decrease amongst bass players because most venues are not providing the capability (with exception of the higher end venues). If you are speaking on the level of a touring band, that's another story but for us mere mortals that own and set up our own sound system, the price of admission is not even close to being worth it. At least in my area (Pittsburgh) you can only play Hardrock, Crafthouse, Jergals...etc so many times. The rest of the shows is bringing your own PA and getting paid ok at best. We provide some great music at a great price point, when we have to start investing thousands into good IEMs and pro level PA with a sound guy we would basically price ourselves out of playing.
