Helvellyn Via Striding Edge & Squirrel Edge | POV
In this video I had the perfect opportunity to climb up Helvellyn with my two sons. There was a brief weather window in a very unsettled week that we just had to grab with both hands. If anything, the weather on the day was a little too good.
We all agreed that we wanted to do Striding Edge as none of had done that route before, it was exhilarating, and the scrambling was great fun. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that after lunch at the summit, we cancelled our original plan of going up to the summit of Raise and decided to come down Squirrel Edge instead.
To be honest, both edges were fine for us. However, they both present risks and every year, people have to be rescued. So please take care, do not attempt in harsh weather. There are easier routes that can be chosen along the ridges, but you will still need to scramble in places and it’s not for everyone. I strongly advise that you go fully prepared and have the right clothing and equipment, especially footwear. I have heard stories from mountain rescuers that people have attempted it wearing flipflops! I decided to try and do a POV of both edges.
I had a new backpack mount that I wanted to try out, so left the camera running throughout to see what footage I would capture. Hope you enjoy the results.
Thanks for watching
Tony

Coast to Coast Part 2 (The finale - Days 12 & 13)
zhlédnutí 149Před měsícem
In this video on day 12, I tackle one of the hardest days I have ever had on trail. This wasn't due to the terrain, but due to the weather and injuries. After leaving the Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge we headed towards Grosmont and then onto Littlebeck. However, the wind was blowing at 45 mph and heavy rain came in about halfway through the 18.5 mile day. Appologies, but not alot of fliming was done...

Looks like you had perfect conditions for that one Tony. Some amazing views from every angle there. Well done on tackling the 2 edges too. Thanks for sharing such detailed footage of the scrambles. They do look quite tricky in places and require a lot of careful negotiating to get up and down safely.

@@AnthonyJohnson1 Thank you Anthony, although I have been up Helvellyn before (pre CZcams days), I’ve never completed the edges and it’s always something I’ve wanted to complete. I have made several attempts in the past but had to abandon it due to bad weather (winter). To do it with my two sons was special to me. There was a lot of footage of the scramble and thought it might be too much to show, but like you, I do this for my family to look back on in years to come, especially my children and future grandchildren, so left it in. There are a few tricky spots, but you can choose alternative routes around them if you don’t feel comfortable going over the top line, which can make it easier, essentially you can create your own route.

Well done Tony. Looks like the elements gave you a tough workout there. I’m guessing completing that was more of a mental battle as a physical one. Can’t believe what an abysmal summer we are having at the moment. The ground is as boggy as in winter. I’m meant to be doing the Pennine Way again this September and very nervous about what the weather will have in store for me! The weather certainly makes or breaks these trips from an enjoyment factor

That path to Blakey Ridge just goes on and on and on......When you watch these videos you don't realise just how far it is as there is nothing to video so at best you get the junction where the Cleveland Way turns off and then you arrive at The Lion - in reality it's a real slog.

Great idea thank you Unfortunately you can't then use the simmer ring as a snuffer if it's underneath and using just the lid as a support might risk melting the rubber O ring - it gets warm but hopefully would be fine The "Trangia" plate then also fits perfectly on the very top to support smaller diameter mugs and is loose enough to be easily removed for snuffing The Esbit style clone burners (with a simmer ring handle) fit that Lixada "Trangia" slot fine None of the options allow the simmer ring to be used in open configuration sadly and using the snuffer is awkward at best (Another alternative might be to flip the whole burner upside down and just use as a windshield with the trangia directly on the ground and using the simmer ring trick to raise it but this doesn't actually work as well thanks for the video and tips :-)

This is due to be the longest distance we'll be walking on any one day. Can't say the idea of 20 mile is appealing but it needs to be done!! Rock formations are limestone pavements - just the underlying rock coming through the soil. Sign posting should get better now it has been adopted as a National Trail - hopefully they'll do something to make crossing the A19 easier?? Many thanks for these. Best of luck for the remaining part whenever you do get back - one YTer I have watched took 3 visits to finish - basically 1 visit for each national park.

The scramble over Angler's Crag (south route) is fairly short and not too difficult - however the path is rocky/roots in many places so you need to watch your footing and when the streams are in full flow they can flood the path. The climb onto the ridge is very steep (but then again, the path at the end of Ennerdale is also very steep). Last time I went up to that ridge, I stood over looking the near sheer drop towards Crummock when a young lady appeared next to me, running on the spot after running up that slope - I was so tempted just to give her a gentle push over the drop if only I'd had the energy to do it. LOL

@TFS Outdoors I was up there that day because I wanted to finish that ridge. Been up a week or so before - started at Bowness Knott car park half way along Ennerdale and walked up to Black Sail with the intention of going up Great Gable and then turning right and following the ridge between Ennerdale and Wasdale (over the other Red Pike) - but cloud was bubbling out of Wasdale and the top of GG was totally covered - so I went up Loft Beck (the route out of Ennerdale on the low route) and turned left at the top - past Haystacks, High Style and Red Pike. By the time I'd got to the low point between Red Pike and Great Bourne, the cloud had spilled over from Wasdale and was going over the ridge and into Buttermere/Crummock so I came down the route you went up onto the high route. The next week I went back up, turned left again and finished the ridge, over Great Bourne and Herdus before coming back down to my car at Bowness Knott. Great being so close to home (about 10 mins to Ennerdale)

Nice start to a Sunday morning. Breakfast, cuppa and watching this on large screen TV. Looked like a nice place for a camp. Taking advantage of a good weather day for an impromptu wild camp sounds like a good plan. Sorry to hear you’re still having a few fitness problems. Sounds like you still had an enjoyable camp though which is the main thing

Thank you Anthony, although my injuries are a pain (literally) at the moment, I’m still finding ways to enjoy the outdoors. As you say, that’s the main thing.

Great to hear from you Owen. I’m pleased you managed to complete the trail, it’s definitely a good one to do, especially the Seven Sisters section. I’m still toying with the idea of getting a new exos pack. Maybe we we will each on the the trail again. Take care

Thank you John, it was good to be back out even if it was a little uncomfortable. As you say we all have injuries and painful niggles. It’s a matter of wiring with and around them to ensure we keep going and doing what we love.

@@TFSOutdoors hah, tramping indeed! I actually did the Kepler Track about 3 weeks ago...it's just south of the Milford Track, but part of the broader Milford Sounds area. Very pretty indeed. I'll keep an eye out for your videos down here if and when the world gets a bit less mad! Stay well.
