Don't label me as an addict
Joan Shepherd, FNP, has helped hundreds of people overcome their physical dependence on opioids, benzodiazepines, or alcohol at the Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine. Here she shares her perspectives based on a recent conversation with a chronic pain patient who has only ever taken their pain medicine as prescribed. A large percentage of our opioid patients fall into this same situation.
-Safe, Comfortable Outpatient Detox
The Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine has been a leading outpatient addiction treatment center since 1998. Our innovative withdrawal management programs, often referred to as The Coleman Method, have helped thousands of people free themselves from addiction to Alcohol, Opioids, and Benzodiazepines. Originally founded in Richmond, Virginia, our network has expanded to cover 10 cities across the US.
-3 - 8 Day Opioid Detoxification Process
For short-acting opiates like oxycodone, most patients complete their detox and begin Naltrexone therapy within 5 days. Longer-acting opiates like Suboxone and Methadone typically take 8 days. Our standard package of services in Richmond, VA, include the detox and 6 months of case management and Naltrexone therapy. As a non-addictive opioid blocker, Naltrexone dramatically reduces cravings so that patients can focus on their recovery. We have a 98% success rate for completing detoxification and starting Naltrexone therapy. During the detox, we work with patients and their families to develop an appropriate aftercare plan. We also offer a convenient, 3-day outpatient alcohol detox and an outpatient benzodiazepine Detox.
-Caring, Empathetic Environment
Our founder, Dr. Peter Coleman, understands first-hand the challenges our patients are facing due to his own personal struggle with the disease of addiction. He has been in long term recovery since 1984. Dr. Coleman has dedicated his career to treating addiction patients and creating a team and an environment conducive to long term recovery for his patients.

This is terrible! And no, it's extremely dangerous- people are dying from opiate withdrawal let alone PRECIPITATED WITHDRAWAL. If anyone is watching this need help- please please realize dehydration is very dangerous and you'll be losing a lot of fluids during a detox. You deserve comfort meds, you dont deserve to suffer- get a dr or go to the er and seek comfort meds. Look up slow induction of suboxone.

I had spine surgery at Rush University in Chicago. They cut through the vertebrae, removed bone spurs growing into my spinal cord and put in an artificial disc. I woke up in the recovery room screaming in pain. They told me to “ concentrate on my breathing “!! It wasn’t until I demanded that they call the hospital administrator on call that they finally gave me some pain medicine! How callous can you get? Imagine if they treated a pet that way! They said they are cutting back on prescribing opioids (it started in 2016) because of narcotic addiction and overdoses. Well prescription opioids have steadily decreased and overdoses have skyrocketed! It’s obviously due to the street drugs, not physician prescribed opioids. Some of the patients with legitimate severe pain will now get their opiates from the street which is very dangerous these days because it could be laced with fentanyl.

I've withdrawn from heavy, sustained use (10+ years) script Opioids, heroin, methadone and Bupe. The "acute" phase has never been more than 7 very bad days, the mindf#ck lasts a few weeks but physically the "well" returns. It's the post acute withdrawal phase you're talking about over the longterm, and can last 2+ years. Finally, Naltrexone has a 2-5% success rate, lowers tolerance, and a return to use (common in this disease) can be fatal because of this. I strongly encourage you to do more research, methadone - full agonist - is the gold standard w a 70+% success rate. And btw, it's also faaaar better than abstinence only approaches for OUD. Please don't spread disinformation like this, you're only making those of us with the disease realize how completely out of touch with the realities of actual acute and post acute withdrawal. czcams.com/video/CduCr-kJXtk/video.htmlsi=hGvYsfEwS_oS8SRC czcams.com/video/0Gnj-DKlbd4/video.htmlsi=a1im_e1kpELNtwcX

Early on during MAP treatment I was overtaking my subs. When I ran out, started to withdraw, so I took a pill called naltrexone. My girlfriend was taking that for alcohol dependence. Naltrexone sounds like naloxone. I thought her medicine would stop the withdrawal process. Nope. It sped it up immediately. 20 minutes after taking her pill I felt like I was in day 3 of opiate withdrawal. Not good 😬

You’re not going to build a dependency from Keaton in the few days it takes to withdrawal. But as it goes for that and suboxone, if you keep taking it when you don’t need it after the first few days, sure you’ll become addicted. Just be smart, use it for the withdrawal help, then plain, stop.

Stop badmouthing Benzos just to go and prescribe SSRIs that make you impotent and cause heart damage via arritmias, and either clotting or bleeding - no more BS - we all know the “new generation” antidepressants are very profitable so you have to get rid of Benzos. My mother took Xanax for decades until she passed away in her 90s - zero dementia or evil symptoms. Kept her calm and relaxed. 1 mg a day for 30 years.

As many times as I've been on subs or off, or tapering or even just "conserving"...In a situation like I was in, supporting a sub habit in prison. But no matter what or how miniscule of a dose I was weaned down to, I would always suffer immensely especially bc I already have anxiety to begin. It would be cool if I didn't need this stuff now but I've accepted that this medication was put here for me and I'd probably be dead by now if I hadn't been on it off and on for 20+ years. It does have a Ball and Chain feeling, being on suboxone, but as a recovering vicious opiate addict, I feel more comfortable than if I was Officially, "off the leash" that is suboxone!
