The Sinking of the USS Wasp: The Most Devastating Torpedo Attack of WW2
(Animated Battle Map)
In this video I explain the sinking of the USS Wasp by an incredibly lucky and destructive torpedo salvo from submarine I-19. I also include the Battle of Edson’s Ridge and show how the two events are connected.
Corrections:
07:08 I say "only an hour left of daylight" I meant to say "only an hour left till daylight".
22:40 I should have said overhead instead of ceiling.

Sending obsolete, slow and "rickety" subs to form the recon line was a huge blunder. They were too late to do the job they were assigned, and failed. But really, the IJN failed in just about everything in this battle. False pride, a very lucky USN, and of course some extremely brave and heroic flying from Naval Aviation saved the day for the US.

It's often claimed that if only Tone 4 had launched on time, Nagumo would have received a much earlier heads-up on the presence of enemy surface units. In fact, given what we know about the path taken by the US task force, had Tone 4 launched on time it would almost certainly have seen nothing at all, because their routes would not have intersected adequately. So Tone 4's late launch was actually GOOD luck for Nagumo, although not enough to turn the tide of battle.

Not according to the Japanese. In "Senshi Sosho" (which is 'not' the official history that some authors have claimed it to be), the Japanese place much of the responsibility for their defeat at Midway onto the shoulders of the pilot of Tone's scout no. 4- Petty Officer Amari- because in his initial report, he didn't mention the presence of an aircraft carrier. It's never been determined exactly why Amari didn't do so, although it's likely that between sighting the van of the carrier force and attempting to stay in cloud cover, he simply never initially saw one. In any event, he caught much of the responsibility for their defeat. By contrast, the pilot of the Japanese scout aircraft who flew right over U.S. carriers without detecting them (a Lt. Chuma, I believe), got a pass in "Senshi Sosho". Why this happened is unknown- but one Japanese investigator of this incident noted that Lt. Chuma (who survived the war) was a graduate of the Naval Academy at Eta Jima- while Petty Officer Amari (who was killed in action in 1945) was not.

What if a US Navy Amphibious assault ship... Say ISS Wasp.... or Helicopter carrier and it's accompanying escorts were transported back in time and reappeared off the coast of Northern England on June 3rd, 793 AD....with a mix of helicopters and a complement of Sea Harrier, and a Marine Expeditionary Force on board. Enough supply ships to fight a sustained campaign of a couple of months...... What would that be like and what would the contemporary people say and think. Suppose such a force was stranded there and couldn't get back to our time..... Now imagine you are the Admiral of the task force. What would be your orders? Those wishing to talk about this scenario please feel free to contact me here and I'll provide contact details so we can do this academic excersise... I think it could e fun and would be a excellent theme for a movie....!! Let's say USS Wasp, a frigate, a fleet replenishment ship loaded full to gills with food, armament, fuel, spare parts, and enough various supplies to keep all ships and their assets operating at a wartime pace for 2 years ( I know, I know.. Why would these ships be accompanied with a supply ship... But for sake of making plot work, let's assume it was there) was either intentionally, supernaturally or accidentally thrust back in time to date I specified.... I assume by giving date most of you will be aware of what the date is famous for Let's discuss what could, would, and should happen... How it unfolds, and what it would be like from the perspective of a local witness on shore that day where the group of ships appeared, the ships crew, and from perspective of a longship 1 mile away when the task force of ships suddenly materialized! I want to make a movie based on this scenario so bad!

The Break down of communication did not lay at the hands of the Royal Australian Air Force RAAF Hudson bomber as the pilot on many occasions in his life stated right up to his death in the 1980s he had reported the Japanese as requested. It lay at Macarthur's command who failed to place this sighting as urgent and relay the message. Also Turner requested Crutchley leave his force and return to the southern landing group to talk over ops with Marine Gen. Vandergrift. Chicago was left in command, and the ships Captain Bode, rather than use his radar (he thought it acted more like a searchlight), or acknowledge and inform the watch of the change in plans, went back to his bunk to sleep. Capt. Bode's actions during the engagement were questioned in an inquiry headed by Admiral Arthur Japy Hepburn. Though the report was not intended to be made public, Bode learned of its findings and shot himself on 19 April 1943, dying the next day. Another thing is you did not mention was that the USS Bagley inadvertently torpedoed the Australian cruiser HMAS Canberra in this engagement.

Actually, the pilots survival after the sinking of 3 carriers would have been more important than the carrier Hiryu. The surviving pilots should have been rotated to safety to train the next generation of pilots, however the Japanese never did this, so every time they lost a pilot, they also lost his experience. Thus towards the end of the war, Japan had very few experienced pilots left.
