Contactless, gearless, silent, lubrication-free axial-flux magnetic gearbox-transmission through permanent magnets(PM). This is actually very similar to axial flux motors, except that there is a flux modulator between the permanent magnet rotors, and that creates a gear ratio between them. What makes magnetic gearboxes so amazing?

I have made a lot of things with mechanical gears so far but you know they have some inherent problems. Noisy operation, needing lubrication or wear on tooth. I wouldn't really call them problems though. Because very high torques can be transmitted with them. But we also have an amazing option like magnetic gears, which don't require contact because they work through magnetic forces. For this r...

You should do a similar experiment using counter weights. You'll still need the stronger aluminum bars for axels and also the stronger steel wire BUT you won't need as much gear ratio to lift heavy objects. It'll show how counter weights can speed up how fast you can lift these objects (just like how a bike in 1st gear goes up hill easier but has that negative effect of travelling slower) - @retsetman9698

Why didn't you just use an aluminum disc as the brake rotor and put some magnets arround it? Using an eddy current brake should be way easier than this and would solve the problems you went all out for to solve 😅

I've obviously dived a little deep but that is not that easy either. the aluminum disk has to be a bit big to create enough eddy current and a lot of powerful magnetsand it’ll get very hot

If you add a variable-current stator plate in between, you could use it for infinitely-variable gear ratios. And the other thing is, if this is used as an electromagnetic coupling, there would be no need for a hydraulic torque converter to decouple the driveline when the vehicle comes to a stop. And if further modifications are added in, it could also have an electromagnetic clutch to connect the input and output together using friction material.

An attempt to productize a magnetic clutch/transfer was made by MagnaDrive back in about 2000. All of this looks familiar and they had some very good systems for misaligned shafts, vibration reduction, gearing, etc. Great looking aluminum housings and led by a former Boeing CEO. But heat dissipation, reliability, and lack of performance along with decreasing capability over time led to its demise. How do I know this? I was an investor and lost a lot of money in what appeared to be a promising technology. So, as much as I like to see someone showing the journey, I know pretty much where this effort ends. The heating is due less to friction than it is to eddy currents caused by the rotating magnetic fields. Keep experimenting, but it might be useful to see what the state of the art is before engaging.

I suggest getting some stronger magnets and also print out a fastening harness to hold the magnets in place (1mm border should do) and print a thinner centerline insert to get them closer. Your effeciency should increase substantially from that, and the safety should also be much better.

That is wild! To make creating all of those tiny plates *MUCH* easier, I would 1. Spray insulating epoxy (or w/e) on both sides of a metal plate. 2. Clamp the plate to a CNC mill on a sacrificial sheet of MDF. 3. Drill some of the holes for mounting, then screw the plate down firmly. 4. Drill the rest of the holes. 5. Cut the pieces out, leaving tabs at each crossing point so the pieces stay in place. 6. Break the plate apart, stack the pieces on a bolt & nut--to hold them firmly aligned--and sand the edges smooth 7. *_PROFIT!!!_* Cheers!
