Re the topic of whether to continue in law school. When I started at University of California Davis, King Hall School of Law I'd saved enough to pay for law school. To answer David Jaffe's question I went to law school to help people get disability benefits and help disabled people in general. I worked towards a law degree and the additional Public Interest Law Certificate. Tuition and fees at UC Davis Law School were $9k a year. My income as a person with a disability was $0 a year. Before applying I spoke with UC Davis administration and financial aid administration who all promised that tuition and fees would only go up 10% a year. Suddenly after my first year at UC Davis Law School tuition and fees skyrocketed up 200%. We had students of color and low-income students have to drop out because TUITION SUDDENLY TRIPLED to $27k a year (I think it's now $44k-$48k?). Student loan limits were lower than the tuition and fees. If you couldn't come up with additional funds on your own then you just didn't have enough. I ended up sleeping in my SUV because I couldn't pay rent, but I managed to graduate. Hey David Jaffe, I heard that you didn't mention the costs AT ALL. Costs were the main reason we lost students at UC Davis Law School (that I know of) and the main factor that derailed my now non-existant career. I was never going to be able to pay off my student loans, never be able to even touch the interest or balance. I'd never be able to rent an apartment, let alone ever buy a house, have a child, or ever even get a full paycheck... EVER. The school's loan repayment assistance program that was fully funded and able to pay off a student's loans in just 5 years of working for a public interest, legal aid type office just VANISHED. There was no more money for the program and they denied entry. I don't know of anyone ever who had their loans paid off by that program. Their program was able to pay off $9k a year but paying off $27k a year was not possible for the program to do. It just didn't have the money. Ironically skyrocketing law school tuition costs and the resulting student loans can keep a law school graduate from being able to become a lawyer. Being unable to pay those new unreasonable student loans might impact getting a positive moral character determination with the California State Bar and thus prevent that graduate from being able to earn any money. Becoming a lawyer can be a HUGE financial mistake if you can't handle tuition suddenly going up 200% and student loans adding year after year of crushing interest to those already crushing costs Graduates can work for decades and end up owing more than when they started paying. Paychecks garnished to pay off huge balances can actually prevent a graduate from having enough money to get to a job, the leftovers from a paycheck wouldn't even cover bus fare. A monthly income of just $1000-$2000 a month in a legal aid job can't touch the loan payments of $6k a month (and those payments just went up.. again... FOREVER). Students deserve to be able to predict what their costs will be. It's gross, abusive and unreasonable to trap a student into a program where they cannot possibly pay off the costs from the first year without finishing the final year, but schools think it's fine to suddenly pull the rug out from under students dropping them into a financial pit that many disabled, low-income and people of color who are low-income cannot ever claw their way out of. CRUSHING STUDENT LOAN DEBT FROM SKYROCKETING, UNPREDICTABLE LAW SCHOOL TUITIONS CAN FINANCIALLY _RUIN_ LAW SCHOOL GRADUATES.

Is this really a good thing? Only black women on the bench? Black women are only something like 1.5% of lawyers in New York. Appointing only black women is not diversity, it's virtue signaling at its very worst. How about a black man? How about a Hispanic man or woman? A Jewish American? An Asian American? A Native American? and God forbid at least One white man or woman? Sorry, but white people are still the majority of the population and should have at least some representation on the court. Diversity is almost never actually practiced by those who preach it.
