Very true, and l think it answers the question that black men always ask, " why is it that it's only black women who talk about being strong and independent?"... Because they HAD TO BE, they never have had a Father provide for them, which is sad and skewed... But it's reality.

Its crazy how this is a social norm in the black community. My father provided and my brother is a provider my grand -fathers provided , as well. Its so out of order and not ok.

I had a father who provided for our family to the point of giving the shirt off his back for what we needed. However, I never had a man that wanted to provide for me and my children, so I became a provider for myself and my children.

I feel for the women and men that had to grow up without the love and protection of their father. The term or phrase "Independent Woman" is just another way of saying that you are a functioning adult. You cannot be independent in a marriage/relationships and expect it to be successful. It's not possible.

I like her, but the segment feels awkward-because of the no eye contact and the father’s response and body language.

Many men don't seem to get that. They teach women to be independent by not being dependable. I suppose this is why my father always stressed to his daughters the importance of being able to take care of ourselves. He was a great dad who didn't want his daughters to stay in relationships just because of being financially dependent upon a man. Women often stay in abusive relationships for that reason.

I had no choice but to be independent so idk what it looks like for a man to provide for me financially and i don’t trust a man to provide for me because the women i see a man providing for always want something in return and I’m not trying to have nothing over my head.

I share her sentiment. I have never had a man provide for me.....I always had my own and provided for myself....not counting of course the way my stepfather provided for me while I lived at home.

And please don’t take offense to this.. it’s just an observation..on the other side of being an independent women is picking, boyish, childish men who never grew up to provide for their woman, they have always been provided to by a woman (like their mother)…they are like kids who cry when they don’t get what they want but instead it’s much more narcissistic now because it’s a grown adult male. Think about how society normalize woman cooking and cleaning, but the only Difference with a wife or live in girlfriend is that her man has the presumption of authority through a patriarch system to demand it from her and get angry with the presumption that he is more powerful and important.

Though I’m grateful that I have been able to raise my children self sufficiently with God on my side I can’t say that I’m proud I never had the support that would have made life easier. Unfortunately this has been the story of to many.
