For people who aren't comfortable tying complicated knots and are hanging their hammock for the first time, this is what I recommend. This knot is called a "figure 8 on a bight". It's almost like the overhand knot, which is the generic knot most people would tie if you said, "Tie a knot in this rope," but with an extra half twist. The advantage over the overhand knot is that a figure 8 is easie...

Then snap your carabiner on. To adjust it tighter or looser, just snap it onto another loop. And that is it. Now go hang out!"

    Great tips - here is another - wear petroleum jelly or a good moisturiser on your feet, it helps keep the skin healthy. One problem with removing insouls, taking off shoes etc is the time it takes, especially if there are multiple river crossings.

    If you are ever in Australia - come to QLD - Binna Burra on the gold coast hinterland. The lower carpark walk - illinbah - has 12 - 14 river crossings. 16k or so but will take 5 hours walking at a decent pace.

    Please use tree straps to protect trees. The circulatory system (cambium layer) is right below the bark, and can be damaged by ropes under pressure. Hammocks are banned in some places because some users are not aware they are killing trees by improper hanging techniques.

      @bruss5922 he is correct, educate yourselves. If you don't tree friendly straps then use a very, very thick rope or place some stuff in between the rope and bark to spread out the pressure

    • @biggering
      @biggering Před 22 dny

      Yes, a bowline would be easier to untie but this one is much easier for most people to learn. And this knot is easier to untie than the simpler overhand on a bight.

  • @edboyle9347
    @edboyle9347 Před 3 lety

    Well, that then requires a couple hooks. There is a simpler way without any real 'knots" .. . czcams.com/video/mviXWfg05aE/video.html

  • @6sfo
    @6sfo Před 3 lety

    yeah but please use webbing. if you just show the public how to use ropes a few of them will damage the cambium of the tree. and seeing such a careless setup (or just seeing the video) WILL damage the relationships we have been building over decades of trying to show park rangers that hammocks are okay for the trees if you are careful. it's still a fact that in many parks if you just use a rope you can get harrassed or ticketed or even booted out of the park. and you can't blame them as they see some awfully foolish people in the course of their work. so the best practice is to use 1.5" or wider poly tree straps, which are cheap and easy to find and usually lighter weight than rope. if you're in your own backyard and you're sure of what you're doing, rope away, of course. but we shouldn't forget we are all each other's role model.

    • @6sfo
      @6sfo Před 3 lety

      Also, I prefer the Becket Hitch (a.k.a. Hammock Knot) on the hammocky end. But your answer is simpler, which simple people like to hear.

      I messed up a lot of times and I found an easy way to undo the knots. All you need to do is open the parts of the knot that are doubled and wiggle the loop through them!

    I agree with you. I've hiked 80 miles in the Idaho Sawtooth Mnts in the last month and came to the exact conclusion you did. If you don't have a clearly safe way over the water then simply remove your insoles and socks and walk through. Optionally I sometimes carry a ultralight small towel within easy reach to dry my feet prior to putting my socks back on. I thought I had invented the whole concept on my own, but apparently not. :-)

      I was about to tie a knot in my hammock but figured I should check the comments for that exact question. Incase anyone else has the same question, Does anyone have any recommendations of another simple hammock knot that can be easily untied? Again, thanks for making that clear! I don't want a permanent in my line.

    • @bogdyy13
      @bogdyy13 Před 4 lety

      if you tie the 8 knot properly (both lines run parallel on the entire length of the knot), it can be untied.

  • @eruiz3116

    A slippery overhand knot(same knot used on a truckers hitch)work the same way but give you fast and easy adjustability as a Whoopie sling or cinch buckle. And it’s slippery so untying is as easy peasy.

    • @EJ-ov4kw
      @EJ-ov4kw Před rokem

      I've always used a "highwaymans hitch" with a bite or another knot that is very simple, I call the "poop-loop" (forgot the original name) with a bite. Tension rests on the loop and not the bite, easily adjustable, and they're pretty easily undone in a few seconds.
