The Only Knot You Need to Hang a Hammock
zhlédnutí 279KPřed 7 lety
For people who aren't comfortable tying complicated knots and are hanging their hammock for the first time, this is what I recommend. This knot is called a "figure 8 on a bight". It's almost like the overhand knot, which is the generic knot most people would tie if you said, "Tie a knot in this rope," but with an extra half twist. The advantage over the overhand knot is that a figure 8 is easie...
How to Use Your Hammock Straps
zhlédnutí 32KPřed 8 lety
Shown with Rallt Hammock Straps, available at Amazon. amzn.to/1P5hy9m "Feed one end of the strap through the other. Pull it tight. Now you’ve got it secured to the tree - or post, or whatever. Then snap your carabiner on. To adjust it tighter or looser, just snap it onto another loop. And that is it. Now go hang out!"
What's the name of this knot?
It's called a "figure 8 on a bight"
Great Job 👏 😊😊
Great tips - here is another - wear petroleum jelly or a good moisturiser on your feet, it helps keep the skin healthy. One problem with removing insouls, taking off shoes etc is the time it takes, especially if there are multiple river crossings.
If you are ever in Australia - come to QLD - Binna Burra on the gold coast hinterland. The lower carpark walk - illinbah - has 12 - 14 river crossings. 16k or so but will take 5 hours walking at a decent pace.
But. You didn’t say how to attach the hammock to the rope?
A black rope half in a shadow 🤦♀️
how do you open it after the hammock has tightened it super hard?
Impossible to actually follow what you’re doing…
This helped set up a hammock in Jeanne mance park in Montreal!
Thank. youso much
Its official. I like you. ❤
no way 😂
This is a figure 8. Butterfly knot just as good if you want to conserve rope.
Shade :[
what if the rope is already in the hammock?
Never use rope for trees! It kills them! Then people place bans for Hammocks for this reason!
Thanks! I need to learn this as I'm entering a critical phase in my life! The senior years!😂
Please use tree straps to protect trees. The circulatory system (cambium layer) is right below the bark, and can be damaged by ropes under pressure. Hammocks are banned in some places because some users are not aware they are killing trees by improper hanging techniques.
There is no way you commented this
@bruss5922 he is correct, educate yourselves. If you don't tree friendly straps then use a very, very thick rope or place some stuff in between the rope and bark to spread out the pressure
Yeah... Don't do this one kids. Good luck getting that knot apart and your hammock Wil SAG
Best video for beginners, and if u don't care about undoing the knots and just reuse the ropes for next time. I will check other knots though.
underrated video
Can't see your hands too well :/ tried to imitate around :17, no dice
perfect, short instruction. thx.
This is really horrible information. The worst possible way to hang a hammock.
Is this called the double figure of 8 ?? Anyone? Help
My hammock has these flat ties, any advice for that?
I've got some crocs I think ill just keep them attached to my pack so i can put them on at crossings
This does not have a way to tighten the line.
Is it too soon to say I love you 🙏
Thank you
Thanks dude!
Best simplest to the point hammock video lol
Watched all of it
And had nothing interesting at all to say.
@@There-Is-No-Virus that’s a msg to myself to remind me that I watched it, this short version of my reminder is only used when I am multitasking
Took me half a freaking hour to get this thing undone - Works well but would highly recommend bowline knot instead
Yes, a bowline would be easier to untie but this one is much easier for most people to learn. And this knot is easier to untie than the simpler overhand on a bight.
Well, that then requires a couple hooks. There is a simpler way without any real 'knots" .. . czcams.com/video/mviXWfg05aE/video.html
yeah but please use webbing. if you just show the public how to use ropes a few of them will damage the cambium of the tree. and seeing such a careless setup (or just seeing the video) WILL damage the relationships we have been building over decades of trying to show park rangers that hammocks are okay for the trees if you are careful. it's still a fact that in many parks if you just use a rope you can get harrassed or ticketed or even booted out of the park. and you can't blame them as they see some awfully foolish people in the course of their work. so the best practice is to use 1.5" or wider poly tree straps, which are cheap and easy to find and usually lighter weight than rope. if you're in your own backyard and you're sure of what you're doing, rope away, of course. but we shouldn't forget we are all each other's role model.
Also, I prefer the Becket Hitch (a.k.a. Hammock Knot) on the hammocky end. But your answer is simpler, which simple people like to hear.
Rope will damage tree.
You are a hammock Godsend
Crisp and to the point video. Easy to learn. Thanks.
Good luck getting that knot undone without pliers, a bowline would definitely be better, not that much harder to learn and far more useful
but then what if its not taut
Shut up punkass
I messed up a lot of times and I found an easy way to undo the knots. All you need to do is open the parts of the knot that are doubled and wiggle the loop through them!
Snapping onto the loop causes the sewing at the loop to separate.
Great job explaining you fucking idiot
I would shoot in full sunlight. On phone screens details are lost.
I agree with you. I've hiked 80 miles in the Idaho Sawtooth Mnts in the last month and came to the exact conclusion you did. If you don't have a clearly safe way over the water then simply remove your insoles and socks and walk through. Optionally I sometimes carry a ultralight small towel within easy reach to dry my feet prior to putting my socks back on. I thought I had invented the whole concept on my own, but apparently not. :-)
I didn't invent it either. I got the tip from a guide in the Sierra Club. +1 on the small towel.
Why hang a hammock from rope? You should be showing this with straps so you don’t damage the tree.
What kind of rope is that?
6mm polypropylene
thanks for a great straight-to- the-point video
Just ordered off amazon. Can't wait to test them out
Thanks for the support, Brad!
It's the 8 knot. 'Make a guy, strangle him, then poke his eye out'. Beware, you won't be able to untie it after you sat your weight on the hammock you'll have to cut the rope
I was about to tie a knot in my hammock but figured I should check the comments for that exact question. Incase anyone else has the same question, Does anyone have any recommendations of another simple hammock knot that can be easily untied? Again, thanks for making that clear! I don't want a permanent in my line.
if you tie the 8 knot properly (both lines run parallel on the entire length of the knot), it can be untied.
A slippery overhand knot(same knot used on a truckers hitch)work the same way but give you fast and easy adjustability as a Whoopie sling or cinch buckle. And it’s slippery so untying is as easy peasy.
I've always used a "highwaymans hitch" with a bite or another knot that is very simple, I call the "poop-loop" (forgot the original name) with a bite. Tension rests on the loop and not the bite, easily adjustable, and they're pretty easily undone in a few seconds.
