Ford Taunus 20m with 6 Volt. I had problems. My friends told: you should convert to 12V. And I said no. That's where I got my nickname.

It is wintertime in Finland and my carage is as cold as it is outside. (-6*C) I have never before started my old ford in this temperature. It is a miracle it started! Anyway I'm testing a ford scorpio 90A alternator converted to 6 volts for old ford Taunus 20m. You can see how the voltage drops as I increase electrical load. But it seems to be working quite well.

I Converted an 12V alternator to 6 Volts for my old ford, which has 6 volt system. This is the first test run. Now there is charging also during idle and low rpm!

The old dc generator cannot carge the battery when idling. It's more likely discharging. (The temperature was -4 *C when shooting this video.)

Few components changed in the voltage regulator. Now the maximum charging voltage is about 7,1 Volts. The light bulb represents the car's charging light. It goes out when charging begins

This 12V voltage regulator was faulty, so I decided to try convert it to 6V. Later it would be used in a classic old ford. After replacing a few components the regulator cuts out the rotor magnetic field above 7,3V. The light bulb indicates the rotor field status

The light bulb is connected to the brush contacts and indicates when the alternator is charging. Light should go out when "charging voltage" exceeds 14V, but it doesn't. This regulator is faulty. It charges too much. (~17V)

Installing an electric fuel pump revealed the leak. How is it possible that a 47 year old fuel pipe is leaking? ;-)

Could a bad voltage regulator cause temp/gas gauge to malfunction I.e. stay stuck on high or low temp or full/empty tank. Or cause the dash gauge icons to come on and off???
yes I have the same issue as once they go faulty. the only energy was is left is in the battery. I have the same issue everything on the dashboard started going do lally
That's why I bought the 90A alternator which has more efficient windings than the 45A I had. No rock machines. Only a 6 volt mono radio and sometimes a tiny chinese mp3 "boombox" which has battery of it's own. Thanks for the comments, Men! :)
Respect... Well done Man. If you still want better charging you must change wire rounds inside alternator. But this is enough if you keep your STW original (no rock machines etc.).
