ANOTHER ‘PRINCIPLE PIPE ORGAN’ (…love this!)
I had a load of fun fixing a couple of the american made pedal pump organs years ago the first one i got off the dump in weymouth it was a joy to find out how they worked and make them work again 😊😊😊
The hymn tune is called “ lord of all the years “
It is…a great tune 👍🎹
Seems like a nice small organ. The lack of a reed no doubt helps with tuning, but I'd favour the extra "colour" from a Swell Oboe before a 2 ft.
Agreed - an oboe would be nice 👍🎹
I came across a rank of pipes designed to sound like an oboe, but were flue pipes by construction. I believe it may have been an Estey rank (it was sitting in a box), and the tone was surprisingly nice. Likely a way to get the tone of an oboe while maintaining tuning stability
A small chamber organ. Ideal for choir accompaniment or small congregation.
Not ideal for recitals 👍🎹
@@OrganicVisitations Oh certainly, It was never designed to be, but I wonder what they suggest if a bride and groom ask for such as the “Widor” ?
Probably put a tape on 😊
@@OrganicVisitations Absolutely, that’s what I tell them to do if they request some ridiculous Pop song or something which is not suitable for the organ.
@@davidcraggs3770 I personally don't see why you couldn't play the "Widor" on an organ like this, unless the key actions is so heavy as to be knackering on the wrists. 30-note pedalboard is perfect as you just go for the top one 😉 Admittedly there's no farty reed on the pedals, and the sound wouldn't be exactly what the composer had in mind, but many people *have* played such pieces on an organ like this and a musical performance is more important than blasting the roof off the church!
Note that there are two different types of stop face -- those that are all black and those that are red and black. The all-black ones seem to be the originals, perhaps confirming your suspicion that the 4 ft. Principal was originally on the Great. The red-and-black ones seem to be the stops added by Mack. These include the Pedal Bourdon, suggesting that the pedal pipes, or perhaps the entire Pedal Organ may have been added. I can't find out very much about the organ builder Mack, but it is my impression that he was much earlier than you suggest -- perhaps around 1890.
I have a Forster & Andrews (1882) and the stop ivories are original. Capitals are always in red with the rest in black. The keys seem to have been changed - the F & A sharps are always rounded. The original swell lever pedal has obviously been turned into a composition pedal with a balanced one added later. Interesting to note the facade pipes with French mouths.
Thank you - I never noticed that 👍🎹
Yes, I am familiar with the rounded black keys too. And I suspect the original ratchet swell pedal was replaced with the balanced pedal in 1994 (although I don’t know that for sure). It looks like a H&H pedal 👍🎹
A well kept organ. I guess one of the benefits of this organ is that it probably stays in tune better than most.
Not having a reed helps of course 👍🎹
@@OrganicVisitations Yes!
@@louisglen1653 Not having a Reed makes this organ neither here nor there in my opinion. They certainly don’t go in for any robust hymn singing !!!
@@davidcraggs3770 Every congregation is different and they all have budget constraints and I am sure that reeds would be significantly more expensive plus they would require a lot more care the flue pipes. The organ sounds fine, I suppose the only thing I would like to see are a few super couplers and perhaps sub couplers, but I like the organ quite a bit just the way it is.
@@louisglen1653 perhaps they should ditch the Dulciana in favour of a 4 foot principal to help lead the singing. I’m sorry but I find Dulcianas the most useless waste of a slider in a Great division especially where Choruswotk is desperately needed. I cannot see the logic if there is string tone on the swell which can be regulated by the swell shutters.
The front case of the organ seems to have pipes with "ears and beards" so are these actually speaking pipes? You are right, the organ does have a nice tone and sound to it and the church itself looks like a little gem. I take that the deep hum throughout your video is the motor for the pump? Anyway, thanks again for a nice video.
Yes, they’re speaking pipes…and the noise in the background is indeed the blower (which was just out of view on the video) 👍🎹
Another little gem - must look it up next time I'm in Sadberge.
Would look nice in your shed, Ian 😊👍🎹
No room I'm afraid - I've already got three!
A reed would have been nice. Phaps an oboe on the swell.
100% 👍🎹
They are nice these Forster and Andrews, often with their distinctive painted pipes. I saw a little organ yesterday at Dacre near Pateley Bridge, built by a North East Builder, H.S Vincent and Co, if any of them organs ring a bell, also going to see if you get to Coxwold soon?
Dacre, just on the way to Keswick? Another one to add to the list of your suggestions. Watch this space 👍🎹
@@OrganicVisitations No, I meant the Dacre in Nidderdale, Yorkshire, not far from Harrogate. But....the other Dacre....
Ahhhh - on my list!
A delightful instrument, I play a 1890 F & A at Porthleven methodist church Cornwall, very similar spec, it is so good and reliable, I can't speak highly enough of it.
They are lovely organs! 👍🎹
What a lovely instrument! But that has to be one of the softest Solo Divisions I’ve ever heard!! Great video as always! And that Tuba… 😍😍😍😍 There’s absolutely nothing like a good, British Tuba stop! That one just needs more umph behind it!
Welcome back!! 👍🎹😊
Fab! It sounded even better with the piano being so honky tonk
It’s probably not been tuned for years 😊🎹
We recently visited two unaltered Willis organ in New South Wales (Australia): Armidale (1879): czcams.com/video/0ipB9sqBa2Y/video.html East Maitland (Hunter Valley) (1876): czcams.com/video/ITHQBqWIvos/video.html
Thank you! I’ll have a watch 👍🎹
I used to have a cassette tape of a radio 3 broadcast of a recital played on this organ. It must have been ~30 years ago and included Walton's Crown Imperial.
Apparently there are no recordings of this organ remaining. Your old tape would be worth preserving (if you still have a tape player) 😊👍🎹
@@OrganicVisitations strangely enough it’s just come up on my Facebook feed as a link to CZcams. It’s called “BBC The end of the line - Ian Hare plays the organ of St Bee's Priory, Cumbria”.
The 8' Geigen Principal on the Great is a prepared for stop, so no pipework installed. NPOR shows the real potential of this instrument, if it ever were to be restored and completed.
Correct 😊👍🎹
Are you just using the mic on your camera? It sounds like it, as the keys are making so much noise. I hope you will upgrade to a good stereo mic positioned properly to capture the sound from the pipes, and a lavalier mic for your voice. And try to avoid the compression which is spoiling the dynamics. All this is constructive criticism, I enjoy your videos. And, someone needs to call Harrison's and tell them to get their butts over there. Any organ in their care shouldn't be in such bad shape.
Thank you - I do appreciate constructive criticism. I do need to invest in more advanced recording equipment! For its age I think it’s in pretty good condition. I imagine, just like all church organs, major work all boils down to the cost. If it weren’t in the care of H&H I suspect it would be in much worse state. Thanks again 👍🎹
Lovely English sound - a pity it's not in better condition. How odd to have a solo manual rather than a choir!
It is a lovely organ but could do with some work. A joy to visit again 😊👍🎹
Loving how you've grown to appreciate the value of a 16' reed on the manuals! Keep up the great work!
They've grown on me 🙂👍🎹
Thanks for the demo. Would be superb if you could build up the main choruses (8’ : 4’ : 2’ : mixture etc) rather than selecting individual pitches. Just a thought…
And a good thought it is! Thank you for the advice 👍🎹
wow
Wonderful demonstration, I believe this was the last major instrument overseen by Father Henry Willis. It is one of Lt Colonel George Dixon's tonal schemes, along with the fine instrument of St James's parish church in nearby Whitehaven, a smaller three manual instrument by Norman and Beard. Dixon was also responsible for a large Harrison and Harrison instrument in Whitehaven's St Nicolas Church, sadly destroyed in the fire of 1971. Whitehaven might be worth a visit as there is also an excellent small H&H organ in the United Reformed church.
Thank you for the info and for the suggestions re organs to visit. Always very welcome and I will add them to my list 👍🎹
Thanks for demonstrating yet another fine organ, albeit in need of a bit of TLC (don't we all?).
It’s a cracker, Ian! 👍🎹
As hymn tunes go, I'd have to say Aurelia is pretty... swell. I don't think I have the maturity and restraint required to play an organ with a 32 ft reed.
I certainly haven’t got the restraint - I can’t help using it! 👍🎹
We have a 32’ reed in our place (ext. down from the Ophicleide) and I only ever use it at Christmas and Easter. It does take remarkable restraint 😂
What a delicious Full Organ! And the Great Gamba is prepared for.
Indeed it is! 👍🎹
That instrument is on need of an overhaul and cleaning.
Yes it is, but a lovely instrument nonetheless 👍🎹
Thanks for another nice organ! Some very beautiful stops.
Thank you too! 👍🎹
I suspect Diapason no. 2 originally lived on the Great, and was swapped with the Swell Geigen. That would have been a more typical arrangement.
Yes I agree 👍🎹
The Great Cornet is 17.19.22 according to NPOR
Thank you 👍🎹
Another beautiful instrument, it's very sad it's not in full working order, but i suppose the cost for renovation and repair will be a fortune. Very good bit o' Bach playing. Excellent video, keep them coming.
A lovely organ and well worth the visit. Thanks for the positive feedback 👍🎹
2:17 distinctive Willis sound!
That was a great organ! Lucky for you to have had a visit to this organ! Amazing! If you want another organ suggestion, how about the Church and Co organ of St Michael, Coxwold, a lovely little modern 2 manual
It’s a cracker, although the crappy recording didn’t do it justice. Thanks for the suggestion…it looks nice and might well be appearing soon 😊👍🎹
Wow, your organ playing sounds just as good as some of the great virtuoso's on the net !!! I do wish however, that you had an extension mike added to your recording apparatus which you could place further out in the church, as the wretched "clacking noise from the keys in irritating. Are the pneumatic pipes all made of lead? If so the organ must be very heavy over all. Anyway, "you lucky-son-of-gun" getting your hands on this huge organ, another great video as usual.
Very nice of you to say so - thank you. I agree I could do with better recording gear and may have to look into investing. Thanks again 👍🎹
Great video; you made the organ 'shine'. Very impressive!!
Thank you 👍🎹
The ensemble just gets more and more turgid as you add stops. I heard that on Ian Tracey's Makin vids, but thought it was a recording problem...
Not the best but lovely to play 👍🎹
Lovely organ! I wish they could swap the Hohl Flute to the Great and the Rohr Flute to the Swell
…and tune it 😊👍🎹
May I offer some acoustic feedback: humbly suggest you thread a lapel mic under your shirt and clip to your collar! To hear you, I have to turn up the volume but knock it back when you play .
Thank you for your humble and helpful suggestion. I’ll bear that in mind 👍🎹
100th like
Much appreciated 😊👍🎹
the organ does have a good strong sound with very good voicing and superb tonal quality athought it definitely needs a tune and a service to fix the cypher isses on the notes not working on the horn stop as well as the tremulant speed overall a very nice organ that deserves to be played more regularly if the church does get a organist interested in playing this fine organ
Come down to All Saints' Northallerton
Another one I’ve been trying to access for quite some time, although I have played it in the past. Drop me an email if you have contact information please? 🙏 👍🎹
For an organ that's over a hundred years old, the key board looks almost new ?! Anyway, another great video. Thanks.
I thought that! I think it must have had work carried out in the 2018 overhaul. Thank for watching 👍🎹
Very nice. Good to see you back. We were recently in the church at Clumber Park. The organ spec was detailed and framed on the wall so I took a pic which I will email to you. I did not get a pic of the organ (service due to start) of which half was way up in the loft and other was in the chancel.
I went to the Clumber Park one years ago but can’t remember the exact details. May well be worth a visit/video 👍🎹
that makes me wonder what attitude the village church (Elvington holy trinity btw) has its only a small one but looks like it could give an attitude off makes me want to go to leeds minster on a friday to attend an organ consort if there doing them just to see what theres sounds like
Just looked at the Elvington organ on NPOR…looks like an interesting on the visit 👍🎹
@@OrganicVisitations ive seen saild very organ on few visits as it seems to be open daily would be intresting to see a video of it even speaking about it makes me more curious to know what Sutton upon Derwent's st Michael and all angles organ looks like church wasn't open when i visited and doesnt seem to have open hours so i can only presume it opens Sundays and spends the rest of the week closed ! as for Elvington holy trinity you'd probs like the church building and its organ has a piano but not sure if they use it more then the organ
What a delightful sound. Lovely dark textures. The lower compass notes in both Swell snd Great departments are so characterful they sound like pedal ranks.
Yes, the bottom end really stood out to me as well! 👍🎹
Good ol tracker action grew up with them does sound quite nice
You can’t beat tracker action in my humble opinion. It would sound amazing following a good tune 👍🎹
The church have no excuse for not keeping that organ tuned and maintained!!! Even if the organ isn’t used very much. It sounds a disgrace being so much out of tune. They may or may not be interested in engaging an organist but I can’t imagine they would have much to play with the use of modern evangelical worship songs etc. most of which are not suitable for organ accompaniment.
A sign of the times unfortunately, David. Agree wholeheartedly with your comments 👍🎹
These modernists have a lot to answer for
A lovely organ with some beautiful delicate stops that are to die for! I hope, now that people have seen the organ on your video it'll get a little bit of love and a service.
I was very pleasantly impressed with this organ! I’ll certainly be back to have another play ‘off camera’ 👍🎹😊
Lovely, a bit of a shame, but hope it will be used a bit more. What was that piece you were playing at the end and after the Great Demo?
I can’t remember what I was playing…I was sight reading some music I found on the organ 😊👍🎹
Great video
Thanks for watching 👍🎹
