How Did This Ancient City Become a TOWN?
zhlédnutí 49KPřed 21 dnem
In 1998 this ancient city in Kent was downgraded to the status of town. This is despite it being home to what is claimed to be England's second oldest cathedral. So how did this happen? In this video we explore the story behind England's 'lost' city. It’s been interesting to hear your thoughts on Beds and Bucks, as I’ve lived there. Have you completed Herts yet? I did have a short spell in W.Mids which obviously had some very interesting Black Country history, but I have been very fortunate to have lived over 30 years in S. Devon. Please let me have your list as it stands, and update me as you finish them off.
Ah ha! I used to go to Dunstable Grammar in the 60’s and 70’s. It used to be quite nice. Currently it has lost its sole, like so many towns, with its string of characterless boarded shops. Lived in Toddington in my teen years, before moving to Leighton Buzzard for my first house. Life was so much simpler in those days. Woburn is still beautifully well kept and great to visit, but from your itinerary, you might list this, along with Toddington as being too small to be recognised into your listing. Pity. It’s funny I never considered Bedfordshire as an attractive place to live. I suppose because it was always infected by Luton.
blen hime palace? is this a computer generated voice or a Yank?
Neither, I'm just not posh enough to use the colloquial pronunciation of Blenheim, so I went with the German pronunciation instead, seen as it's named after a place in Bavaria and all. You think I'm American?? I guess you're not too hot on placing accents then, are you?
The removal of our city status is a disgrace.
What about shoebury
And st Albans was my home for 23 years , loved living there
🏞️
I loved it! 💚
This is precisely the heart and soul of why I treasure history and ancient architecture. Genuinely you brought a tear to my eye. These days buildings are bland, cheaply constructed, music has had its soul auto tuned out of it, and cars are overly plastic rolling computers.
That's kind of you to say, thanks! And I agree, particularly about music. Thank goodness for recordings from certain past decades, at least!
Thank you as always- love to get to virtually see and learn bits of history ❤
Lovely looking place.
Such beautiful places too ❤ I an so grateful for the preservation of such architecture.
Just urban sprawl 😞. and even a Croydon look alike ( Woking) Surrey was once a beautiful county. If these are the 'prettiest' towns what are the others like?
A beautiful city , ruined by government and immigrants. VOTE REFORM U.K. and let’s make our countries history great again.
Who came from the butterfly loin🦁 👇
Just your typical Blairite idiotic constitutional vandalism, but also no credit to the various MPs who've served the city since then. Rochester must reclaim its heritage as a city of England.
Tony Blair was PM at the time but the review into Local Government which resulted in Medway being formed was started under John Major's Government
Your first comment, before you edited it, wrongly said that it lost its city status under John Major. The video makes it entirely clear that the review on local governance arrangements had no bearing on the city status of Rochester. I suspect the real reason it happened was that the Civil Service had been knocked for six by Blair's decision to create the super-department of Environment, Transport and the Regions, which included the local government portfolio, for purely party political reasons so he could appear to be giving the left's darling John Prescott a powerful portfolio. They will have been so swept up with managing the reorganisation plus an incompetent Secretary of State, and as a consequence, missed it. I fear the situation will soon repeat with Angela Rayner.
How about Roman Sorviodunum which became Anglo-Saxon Sarisburh and until the 19th century was the parliamentary district of Old Sarum. It too had a cathedral until that was moved a few miles south to the river.
Maldon is beautiful
Whilst not the county of my birth, I have lived in East Sussex since 1989. It is a very picturesque county with lovely countryside as well as all those towns you feature. I may change the order slightly, but that would be picky. I enjoyed this one.
Ah, thank you!
A Village, Town, with a Cathedral and/or University is a City, no matter how large or small it is. St. Davids is the Smallest City in the UK, as it is a Cathedral City.
That's a myth a city has not needed a cathedral since the 19th century and there has never been a stipulation that it needs a university. There are several cities without cathedrals, several towns that have them without being cities and many places that have university campuses that are not cities. To be a city since the 19th century a settlement has needed either an act of Parliament or letters patent declaring it so
Watching the video,I miss my stay in Banbury and Bodicote village at the heart of England. The romantic atmosphere, the bright sunlight after it rains and typical English sights and sounds.Thank you for this video.
Ignored by the media because their beloved Labour Party was responsible for the cock up.
The review into local government started under the Tory party
When the boundaries were drawn up, what was the point in splitting the Ockendons into two different counties? Why not put North and South into Eseex, or into London?
Great video !!! I've subscribed your channel !!!
Thank you!
Thanks for your video. The siege of Rochester castle was the subject of a recent film. Paul Giametti played Bad Bad King John.
Ah thanks, I'll have to check that out. Sounds like my kind of film!
@@AlexinGreatBritain Sorry I can't remember the name at this moment. It's a rip roaring yarn--- sort of a 'dirty dozen' medieval England style!
The movie is called 'Ironclad'. We have the Welsh to thank for it- shot entirely in Wales!
Ah nice! Filming in Rochester itself wouldn't be the best idea for the movie, what with the car park outside and all.
What are the top cricket cities?
Good question! Off the top of my head, probably London as Middlesex and Surrey both play there.
The only part of Christian London left
If it has a Cathederal IT'S A CITY,
No it isn't. Blackburn and Guildford have had Anglican cathedrals for a long time but are not cities. Preston, Doncaster and Wrexham don't have cathedrals but are cities
Wasn't Norwich the capital of England at one time? The cathedral is beautiful.
Apart from 1 or 2 towns on your list , I don’t seem to have the same notion of « pretty » as you !! I can think of many more towns in England and Europe which are 100 +times prettier than this selection !!
But that's not a fair comparison, is it? This video's only about Berkshire.
@@AlexinGreatBritain yes , but what are your notions of « pretty » ? I just find many of the buildings you show in some of these towns rather bland and ugly , as in many other towns in GB . I am not against modern buildings , but I think that we can be modern and pretty / beautiful at the same time . Many architects today just seem to have no idea of beauty , which doesn’t always cost that more to implement …
@@simonallchin7436 That's a deep question. There are lots of ways in which a town can be pretty. What I will admit is that I don't believe Berkshire scores too high in terms of beauty relative to other counties despite its royal connections. But then it did suffer badly with the county border changes of 1974, losing the likes of Abingdon, Faringdon and Wallingford, but gaining Slough in return!
@@AlexinGreatBritain yes , Slough is definitely not a recommended tourist destination !
Been to Wadhurst and stayed in Hastings old town. My favourite though is Rye!!!
I worked at Upminster during the late 90’s. North Ockendon came under the London Borough of Havering and came under the area where I worked. However, South Ockendon came under Essex County Council’s responsibility, despite being bordering each other.
Blenheim (in Woodstock) is pronounced BLEN-im.
Great video! 👍
I am sorry but councils cannot change a city to a town ridiculous!!!
City status in England Wales and Northern Ireland is officially held by a public body responsible for the city wether it be a unitary authority, district Council, parish Council or charter trustees. When a district Council or unitary authority holding city status is abolished they are supposed to either set up.a Parish Council or a Charter Trust, the outgoing Rochester council forgot to do this
Brighton is known here in Brazil for its team and beaches
I cant believe people are still scared of these buildings....brides won't get married in churches because of graves ...ridiculous...
Excellent. Thank you. The Mermaid Inn is well worth a visit.
Thanks, yeah it's a stunning building, for sure!
Great video Alex, Rye looks like an absolute gem.
Thanks, and yeah it is indeed!
Hello Alex, l enjoyed this video, but you're right that we didn't all know that Rochester is no longer legally a city. However, although l no longer live there, my ancestral city will always be a city to me and many others. Hellen
Too right. A city in our hearts!
I think the Grand Hotel is also where the IRA tried to take out Margaret Thatcher ☑️
Wahey, he's back! And an excellent list too from a superb scenic country. 😊
Hey, thanks!
Love these videos. Makes you realise what a great country we have
I MUST SAY i HAVE MISSED SO MUCH BY CONFINING MY EAST SUSSEX VISITS TO Brighton. Very INFORMATIVE AND FUN Alex. thank YOU .
Thanks, and yeah some of these towns are in Brighton's shadow a bit, so that's understandable!
Thanks!
Thanks Dianne, very much appreciated! :)
Nice to see Hastings one-up Brighton in something for a change. Up yours brighton.
Thank you Alex
No problem!
The Men of Kent along with their fellow Kentish Men from the other side of the Medway should rise up and complain bitterly. Maybe a latter day battle of Swanscombe. 😊
Was that when the Norman King was offered their allegiance in return for leaving them alone? Invicta - Unconquered.
@nigelanscombe8658 Exactly so. Hence Kent's moto 'Invicta' (undefeated)
@@rsilman73 indeed it was a negotiated peace by acknowledging King William I as their king in return for him not altering their lifestyle. This was, of course, after the battle of Hastings where thousands died trying to stop him taking the crown and King Harold was slain battle. But before the “Harrying of the North” to subjugate the North where wasn’t accepted as king.
Thank you i think it should have it's city status back because of the cathedral and the age it was a city.
Who cares? I am from Ipswich, we are a town and happy to be so. St Asaph (population 3000 odd) is a city. So effing what?
