O Blessed Life, the Heart at Rest (1963)
Martyn Lloyd-Jones singing with his congregation
Congregational singing
Westminster Chapel, London
Tune: SAXBY
O blessed life, the heart at rest
When all without tumultuous seems
That trusts a higher will, and deems
That higher will, not mine, the best
O life, how blessed, how divine
High life, the earnest of a higher
Saviour, fulfil my deep desire
And let this blessed life be mine

Commit now all your griefs And ways into His hands, To His sure Truth and tender care, Who earth and Heaven commands. Who points the clouds their course, Whom winds and seas obey, He shall direct your wandering feet, He shall prepare your way. Put all your trust in God, In duty's path go on; Fix on His work your steadfast eye, So shall your work be done. No profit can be gained By self-consuming care; To Him commend your cause; His ear Attends the softest prayer. Through waves and clouds and storms He gently clears your way: Wait, then, His time; so shall this night Soon end in joyous day. Leave to His sovereign sway To choose and to command; So shall you, wondering, own His way, How wise, how strong His hand! Let us, in life and death, His steadfast Truth declare, And publish with our latest breath His love and guardian care.

Early, my God, without delay, I come to seek Thy face; My thirsty spirit faints away Without Thy cheering grace. So travellers in the desert sand Beneath a burning sky, Long for a cooling stream at hand, Lest they should faint and die. Thy glory, I have seen, and power, Within Thy temple shine; O Lord, repeat that heavenly hour, That blessing so divine. Not all the pleasures of a feast Could please my soul so well, As when Thy richer grace I taste, And in Thy presence dwell. Not life itself, with all her joys, Can my best feelings move; Or raise so high my cheerful voice, As Thy forgiving love. Thus, till my last expiring day, I'll bless my God and King; Lift my exulting heart to pray, My fervent voice to sing. (Psalm 63)

How blest are we if God the Lord No more imputes our sin, But washed in the Redeemer's blood, Our garments are made clean. Happy beyond description, we Whose debts are thus discharged; Set from our guilt and bondage free, We feel our souls enlarged. While inward guilt remained suppressed No comfort could we find, Unease lay burning in the breast And troubles plagued the mind. Then we confessed our hidden thoughts, Those secret sins revealed; Thy pardoning grace forgave our faults, And grace our pardon sealed. How shall we dare delay to pray, When like a raging flood, Temptations rise to take away Our hold from our dear Lord? Our hiding-place and peace Thou art, Our strength in Satan's hour, The guardian of the faltering heart, And source of keeping power. (Psalm 32)

How shall I sing that majesty Which angels do admire? Let dust in dust and silence lie; While sings the heavenly choir. Thousands of thousands stand around Thy throne, O God most high; Ten thousand times ten thousand sound Thy praise; but who am I? Thy brightness unto them appears, Whilst I thy footsteps trace; A sound of God comes to my ears, But they behold Thy face. They sing, because Thou art their Sun; Lord, send a beam on me; For where heaven is but once begun There hallelujahs be. Enlighten with faith's light my heart, Inflame it with love's fire; Then shall I sing and bear a part With that angelic choir. I shall, I fear, be dark and cold, With all my fire and light; Yet when thou dost accept their gold, Lord, treasure up my mite. How great a being, Lord, is Thine, Which doth all beings keep! Thy knowledge is the only line To sound so vast a deep. Thou art a sea without a shore, A sun that's always there; Thy time is now and evermore, Thy place is everywhere.

Heal us, Emmanuel! we are here; Waiting to feel thy touch; Deep-wounded souls to thee repair, And Savior, we are such. Our faith is feeble, we confess We faintly trust Thy Word; But wilt Thou pity us the less? Be that far from Thee, Lord! Remember him who once applied With trembling for relief; "Lord, I believe," with tears he cried; "O help my unbelief!" She, too, who touched Thee in the press And healing virtue stole, Was answered, "Daughter, go in peace: Thy faith hath made thee whole." Like her, with hopes and fears we come To touch Thee if we may; O send us not despairing home; Send none unhealed away.

He who has made his refuge God Shall find a most secure abode, Shall walk all day beneath His shade, And there, at night, shall rest his head. Then will I say, 'My God, Thy power Shall be my fortress and my tower: I, that am formed of feeble dust, Make Thine almighty arm my trust.' Twice happy one! my Maker's care Shall keep me from the tempter's snare; The tempter, Satan, who betrays Unguarded souls a thousand ways. But if the fire, or plague, or sword, Receive commission from the Lord To strike His saints among the rest, Even the pains of death are blest! The sword, the pestilence, or fire, Shall but fulfil their best desire; From sins and sorrow set them free, And bring Thy children, Lord, to Thee. (Psalm 91)

Earth was waiting, spent and restless, With a mingled hope and fear; And the faithful few were sighing, 'Surely, Lord, the day is near; The Desire of all the nations, It is time He should appear.' In the sacred courts of Zion, Where the Lord had His abode, There the money-changers trafficked, And the sheep and oxen trod; And the world by earthly wisdom Knew not either Lord or God. Then the Spirit of the Highest On a virgin meek came down, And it burdened her with blessing, And it pained her with renown; For she bare the Lord's Anointed, For His cross and for His crown. Earth for Him had groaned and travailed Since the ages first began; For in Him was hid the secret That through all the ages ran Son of Promise, Son of David, Son of God, and Son of Man.

Sweet as home to exiles weary, Light to newly-opened eyes, Flowing springs in deserts dreary, Is the life that Christ supplies: All who taste it Shall to rest immortal rise. Blessèd are the eyes that see him, Blest the ears that hear his voice; Blessèd are the souls that trust him, And in Him alone rejoice: His commandments Then become their happy choice.

Begin, my tongue, some heavenly theme, And speak some boundless thing; The mighty works, or mightier Name, Of our eternal King. Tell of His wondrous faithfulness, And sound His power abroad; Sing the sweet promise of His grace, And the redeeming God. His every word of grace is strong, As that which built the skies; The voice that rolls the stars along Speaks all the promises. O might I hear Thy heavenly tongue But whisper, "Thou art Mine!" Those gentle words shall raise my song, To notes almost divine.

Be still, my heart! all anxious cares Are hinderances, and thorns and snares; They cast dishonor on my Lord, And contradict His gracious Word. Brought safely by His hand thus far, Why wilt thou now give place to fear? How can I want if He provide, Or lose my way with such a Guide? When first before His mercy-seat My all to Him I did commit; He gave me warrant from that hour To trust His wisdom, love, and power. Did ever trouble yet befall, And He refuse to hear my call? And has not He His promise passed, That I shalt overcome at last? He who has helped me hitherto Will help me all my journey through, And give me daily cause to raise New Ebenezers to His praise. Though rough and thorny be the road, It leads me on, apace, to God; Then count all present trials small, For God will make amends for all.

At even, ere the sun was set, The sick, O Lord, around thee lay; O in what divers pains they met! O with what joy they went away! Once more 'tis eventide, and we Oppressed with various ills draw near; What if thy form we cannot see? We know and feel that thou art here. O Saviour Christ, our woes dispel; For some are sick, and some are sad, And some have never loved Thee well, And some have lost the love they had; And some are pressed with worldly care, And some are tried with sinful doubt; And some such grievous passions tear That only Thou canst cast them out; And some have found the world is vain, Yet from the world they break not free; And some have friends who give them pain, Yet have not sought a friend in Thee; Thy touch has still its ancient power; No word from thee can fruitless fall: Hear, in this solemn evening hour, And in Thy mercy heal us all.

Arise, my soul, arise, Shake off all doubting fears. The perfect Sacrifice In my behalf appears. Before the throne my Surety stands, My name is written on His hands; My name is written on His hands. He ever lives above, For me to intercede; His all-redeeming love, His precious blood to plead, His blood blood secures His ransomed race, And speaks before the throne of grace, And speaks before the throne of grace. The Father hears Him pray, His dear Anointed One; He cannot turn away The presence of His Son. His Spirit answers to the blood, And tells me I am born of God, And tells me I am born of God. My God is reconciled, His pard'ning voice I hear; He owns me for His child, I can no longer fear. With confidence I now draw nigh, And, "Father, Abba, Father!" cry, And, "Father, Abba, Father!" cry.

Now to the Lord a noble song! Awake, my soul! awake, my tongue! Hosanna to the eternal name, And all His boundless love proclaim. See where it shines in Jesus' face, The brightest image of His grace; God, in the person of His Son, Has all His mightiest works outdone. The spacious earth and spreading flood Proclaim the wise and powerful God; And Thy rich glories from afar Sparkle in every rolling star. But in His looks a glory stands, The noblest labour of Thy hands; The radiant lustre of His eyes Outshines the wonders of the skies. Grace! 'tis a sweet, a charming theme; My thoughts rejoice at Jesus' name; Let angels dwell upon the sound, And heavens reflect it to the ground! O, may I live to reach the place Where He unveils His glorious face; There all His beauties to behold, And sing His name to harps of gold!

One day, the many who have thrown away our Christian Heritage Hymns in favor of whatever was on the market table of the Christian Entertainment Industry will look back with deep bitter regret over how they have betrayed their fathers and deprived their children. • Bring back the Hymnal! • Make a whip and drive out the worldly praise bands! • Restore the days when the Church was a center of music education! • Give gifted Organists the recognition they deserve! • Change the expectations of congregants! We will begin to understand Worship when we stop seeking ecstasy FROM God, and start seeking excellence FOR God!
