This is so helpful for me. My oldest is also autistic and really struggles with motivation to write anything. He's capable, but he just thinks it's boring. But he also needs that structure. So it's good to know IEW is good for providing that structure! My son might really benefit from that too. I was considering Brave Writer, but I can see how it might not be the best fit for my son as well. Thanks!

This takes up less space from what I am doing, but similar. I use a large three ring binder. At the beginning of the year, I removed all the lessons, then placed all of the pages for each individual lesson in sheet protectors. They are in order, so each time we start a lesson, I simply pull it out. Sometimes, I prepare several lessons ahead and other times I cut the night before. Either way, it has saved time just by pulling them out. They may end up in the trash once the book is complete, so now I wish I had just used this book. Now I will have to go through and pull all of them out which will take a little time. Oh well, it is nicely organized. I may convert to this method once we are ready to Level-up.

I know this video is a year old but I’m so glad I found it. I am searching for a writing curriculum that is a good fit for my 13 year old daughter. She has dyslexia and dysgraphia. This is our 4th year homeschooling and I can’t find that “amazing fit” for our family. We used Writeshop for 2 years. It was okay for the time we used it I guess. We are now using IEW structure and style. I love the structure. Her writing has improved so much but she hates it. She hates the banned words and the checklists but I think it has pushed her to improve her writing and makes it more interesting to read. So I’m on a hunt for something different. I’m also on a hunt for a reading curriculum. What I’m looking for may not exist.😅 I’m looking for novels to read and I would like a guide to discuss the book. Is this sort of what Brave writer is or can I use it that way and it could be our reading and writing curricula? I need to watch a couple more videos to see exactly how Brave writer works. Oh I don't do it that way cause I reuse the curriculum so gluing and stapling would ruin it 😊 I'll have to stick to the binder with the each lesson in a page saver (activities can be filled out with dryerase on top of the page protectors and all the little activity bits are tucked neatly behind. Their huge and it's time consuming to put together but it works when you have a lot of children to cycle through each level with. Works for the consumables in most curriculum

If you know that you’re going to use the curriculum a second time with the younger sibling, do you pre-copy all of the pages so that you don’t have to buy a brand new workbook or is it just easier/cost-effective to revise the workbook?

I was relating to you so much through this video. I've been losing my hair for the last 8 years, and every time I have a baby, it gets worse and worse... the agony of looking in the mirror and seeing it, and you know everyone else is seeing it too, but of course, they won't say anything. Definitely had some breakdown moments. I used to have such thick hair... You mentioned not waiting to do something about it before it got bad. If you could go back, what steps would you take, or steps you could suggest to someone to take back at the beginning of the process?

Oh girl. I have used AAR for a long time. THIS IS GREAT!!!! So great! My kids never wanted to do the coloring and such with old activity books because they knew they would end up in the TRASH! This is good! So good! And if someone has to report, it also shows work completed!

Really appreciate your thoughts on this topic. I'm struggling with picking a writing curriculum for my ASD son too. I absolutely LOVE Julie too! We tried Darts this year and enjoyed the books, but didn't really get into the meat of the Dart...like you said, it is a bit abstract and he didn't connect well to the concepts being taught. I did do one of the online, coached classes where I was taught the Writer's Jungle (now Growing Brave Writers). It went so well! He enjoyed the freedom of the free writing process. So I do think I'll continue using the BW Friday Freewrite idea, but will look into IEW for a more step-by-step process.

I would also recommend- minimalist homeschool by Zara fagen and unhurried homeschooling by durenda Wilson There’re other books on my to read list like how children learn by John holt, free to play by Peter gray, the call of the wild and free by Ainsley arment, better together by Pam barnhill… there’re so many good books out there.

My 9 year old is also autistic ❤️❤️ after we finish out tgtb handwriting were gonna try handwriting without tears since im not going back to tgtb next school year we are doing fix it grammar and easy peasy for more writing becuz i wasnt sure about iew writing we may try it for 5th grade. We just switched to math mammoth and it has been working very well. After trying 12 different maths thats the only one that works well so happy to see another mom using it with her autistic child ❤️❤️❤️

Hey! Looking into GG for next year...did you find the Nebula level was a good place to start? My son will be 8 and in 3rd grade next year - he's a pretty good reader, but don't want to place him in the Protostar Level if he's missed concepts in the Nebula level. Also, did you find any "holes" in GG, anything needing supplemented?

Great hack! I think I'm also going to make color copies of the activity sheets and keep the originals to utilize again (for repeat copying) when my second child is ready for the program!

This is not a truly Secular curriculum, the author is christian and it shows through in her righting - for Secular and non christian home educators History Quest, and History Odyssey are a much better fit than this one.
