Hasselblad XCD 25V, the best XPAN lens for the X2D?
Thanks to the awesome people at www.fiftypointeight.be , I got a second opportunity to use the awesome Hasselblad X2D system. This time with the newly released, 25V wide angle lens. I decided to maximise my shooting time, by using the XPAN crop. It was a lot of fun and to me one of the best usecases for this lens on the system.

Lovely images and video! I’d go Thypoch 😂 this is way too expensive and it’s too negligible between the two imo. You got to try one out!
I would love to try one out and compare them head to head. Based on your pictures, I don’t think I would be able to spot a difference head-to-head in a blind test. 🫣
@@berndvandecruys I need someone to let me borrow one 😅
X2D images are at another level.
They are quite something special 💯
not in the same league
What are the main differences according to you?
I recently received an M9-p as a gift and a couple lenses. When I look the stuff up, it's all so expensive which makes me think about how crazy the quality of everything must be but at the same time I'm a beginner photographer this would be my first camera and idk if I could do justice to this camera because I find very little material on how to use it and I think I should just start trying but at the same time I often think about selling it and buying something more up to date that I can use for work idk what to do. Help. Lol the pictures seen in the video look amazing but I know the camera has so many limitations that it kinda means more to the people who actually got to shoot with it when it came out, are experienced photographers or that know what the camera can do. Any resources or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I know it's a jewel 😢
Thanks for sharing this and indeed not an easy choice. It depends a bit on which type of photography you want to explore the most. If it’s low light l, animal, sports or portraiture, I would go for another system and use fast autofocus and a more modern sensor to assist you. If you want to explore the rangefinder experience, manual focus and focus on street, documentary, architecture type of photography, then keep the M9 and practice your skills. You can always sell it later on 😇. If you sell it now, without giving it a chance, I expect you to regret that decision a couple of years down the line 🙂✌🏻
Shots do look like film
In some instances it really does 🪄
what are the best settings to use on the SL2-S when using M lenses? do you set up a user profile for settings specific to M lenses?
Make sure the joystick is set to push to zoom in, to get critical focus with M lenses. And make sure the camera has a correct lens profile for the M lens, so that IBIS is active. Other than that, you don’t need much more.
Both of them are likely to made by Panasonic because Leica SL3 is made by Panasonic for sure. It has the same lens mount as Panasonic. Both European small camera companies are such in camera electronics so it would not be possible for them to make such electronics cameras and image processing from the scratch and sell only few cameras. They are not anything like the mechanical cameras they used to be. The lenses are also make by Panasonic because the Hasselblad lenses all printed “Made In Japan” but Panasonic seems to do an excellent job. Also, Hasselblad was bought by the Chinese drone manufacturer DJI. The sensors are made by Sony because Sony has almost monopoly on image sensors for professional cameras.
I can assure you that the SL3 is made in Germany. Of course there is a partnership with Panasonic for technology and they are both part of the L mount alliance (Sigma is also part of it). That’s why they share the same lens mount. The Leica APO lenses of the SL system are also engineered and manufactured in Germany. Hasselblad is indeed owned by DJI, but the cameras are also still made in Sweden. Technology wise, a lot of parts do come from other countries like Japan.
I have the M10M and M11M, I also have the SL2 and the SL3. The monochrom cameras are just amazing. I decided to Keep both because I like the older lenses on the M10M and I like the R lenses on the SL2. I do not do video so do not need those features.
That’s a really nice kit 🤩. Which lens do you like most on the Monochrom bodies? I have picked up an M10M recently and been testing out a couple of lenses
@@berndvandecruys I use the 28 Elmarit ASPH a lot on this body. I use the 28 cron on the M11M. I am more of a 28 shooter than a 35 shooter. I have the 50 rigid which is real nice on the M10M. I find the new lenses are better on the M11M or adapted on the SL3. The 50APO, The noctilux are great on the M11M. The noctilux is real nice on the M10M as well. I also use the WATE on the M10M. The summmilux's work on both real well.
@@laurapodrasky9687 very very nice. I am curious to see how the 28 Lux pairs with a M10M 💯
@@berndvandecruys That will be an awesome set up.
Nice one mate. 👍🏽 Been working on a similar video myself. X-pan mode is one of the most challenging but also fun crop factors to shoot. Very nicely composed at 7:20 by the way. I see what you did there. 🤩
Looking forward to your next video then about the X2D 💯. How do you like the system, compared to the Leica SL one?
@@berndvandecruys It’s a real pickle. There are some things I love about the X2D others, where the SL is the master. Their child would be the perfect camera. 😂 How about you mate?
@@oliscurra haha a Leicablad, would indeed be a near perfect camera. To me the X2D has something special. The colours straight out of camera. The UI, grip and overall UX is awesome. Within Leica, I still like the M bodies best. I have a M10 monochrome now to try out. There is some magic 🪄 there.
@@berndvandecruys Ooooh cool. You gonna do a video on that right? The monochome? I've never shot one before, so looking forward to hearing your take. What's your main cam at the mo?
@@oliscurra 100% gonna do a video on the monochrome. My plan at the moment is M10 monochrome for digital and M6 / Mamiya 7 for colour. Maybe a crazy idea, but worth a shot 😁
Why do you use phocus app instead of capture one ?
CaptureOne does not support the Hasselblad raw files unfortunately. Pho is has been designed to work with those files, so it’s the best option I’ve got ✌🏻
Which flash works properly with x2d?
I have not used flash myself with the camera but In TTL mode, the X2D 100C supports Nikon flashes SB-300, SB-500, SB-5000, SB-700, SB-900, and SB-910, as well as Profoto A1, B1, and B2 for Nikon.
Why do hassleblad advertise this 25mm lens as for night shooting and they don’t say this about 38mm. Why? Is 38mm good for xpan crop?
Usually when shooting starry skies, the wider the better. But of course you can use the 38 perfectly fine for night scenes in the city. 🌃 Also the 38 can be used for the xpan crop. It’s all personal choice and taste 💯
so does that mean you are keeping the panoramic adapter for the Mamiya 7? 🙃 good shots, I like the colours this system delivers, solid kit
For the time being, I’m gonna hold onto that Mamiya kit 😇. The colour science of the Hasselblad is very nice. Little to no editing was done to the files.
Don’t like the pop up little additions to your work. Very odd, nobody does that. Are you afraid someone may copy your work. Get real….
Ok no problem. I used the stickers to indicate who took the photo, just as a fun way to do so. They’re not shown continuously, so I went from the assumption it would not hurt the viewing experience. Nothing to do with copyright or anything 😅. But thanks for the feedback in any case
🚀💪🏻 Nice shots !
The more I use the X2D, the more I like it 🤩💯
The Leica files were certainly a bit on the cool side - just like my Panasonic S1R.
Yep, same observation I made
Not just that one of course 🙂
Very good picture on 5:16 Bernd!!! Thank you.
Thanks 🙏🏻! That one was also one of my favourites 💯
Nice pictures and overview.
Thanks ✌🏻
Love the video. The X2D is a dream camera for me. I just don’t have a use case for it. I need to make money from shooting with it if I were to invest in this kit. That said, the LUMIX S5II, significantly less expensive, has an XPAN mode as well and it’s a full-frame 24MP mirrorless. You take a look at that camera and possibly do a comparison between the two. Get the Sigma 24-70MM f2.8 Art MkII for the S5II and call it a day.
So many nice cameras to choose from. More cameras and brands should provide these multiple crop factors in the EVF. A lot of fun. I don’t have experience with the LUMIX cameras. But from the feedback I have received, they are incredible value for money 💯
Both have the boring digital look 😅
Haha, indeed the files don’t get much cleaner than that 😅
Should you are compare picture time line more second? Hasselblad X2D looking realistic dynamic and sharpness.
The Hasselblad files are indeed quite remarkable
Great shots! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Fred. Appreciate it ✌🏻
Enjoyed the video. Which camera bag are you using. Thanks
Thanks Tim! I have been using the Peak Design Everyday Sling 6L bag for a couple of years now. Holds Leica gear perfectly :-).
Thank you
Too short to evaluate the difference
I would’ve loved more time with both systems. Maybe some extra time in the future 🙂
Hasselblad.. my dream
💯
Ultimately both cameras use Zeiss lenses with Schott glass. If you're a great photographer, either will elevate you to the next level.
Yup, both are incredible tools that can amplify the skills of the photographer ✌🏻
Is it so that Capture One cannot be used with X2D native files?
Yes, unfortunately that’s the case. It will probably never be supported. Workaround is to create Tiff files in Phocus and then use those in C1
@@berndvandecruys Ok. Thank you.
Thank you for a very nice and unbiased review. I had an X1D11 for a long time the files were awesome, I loved it. I thought about the X2D and have tried it and my brother owns one. But rather like you I’m heavily invested in M/M42 and L Mount lenses, so The SL3 was a no brainier to replace the SL2-S I bought after the Hassie. it is not possible to get the amount of lens options available for the Leica for the Hassie system (without the compromises that come with converting full frame on a medium format sensor) and I am prepared to do a little more work in post with the excellent DNG files in the Leica, which work so much better and can be pushed further in LR PS and Capture one (if that’s your bag). Whilst the Hassie files are beautiful and no doubt the colour science is the best around, always had to pre- edit Hassie files in Phocus in order they would be more compliant in other post software. But no doubt the user experience is fantastic on both cameras, but I don’t need all the extra speed and presets etc of a Sony or a Fujifilm to crowd out the experience of taking a photo; and feeling like you have created it and not the tech in your hand. Either camera is a great choice if you have the budget.
Thanks for adding your perspective and experience with both systems. The point about the lenses is a great one, so many options to choose from within the Leica system itself, when you adapt M or R lenses to the native L ones. You can go from perfect/clinical to imperfect/character, while staying with the same brand ecosystem.
I like hasselblad color science so much more ...
It is quite impressive indeed!
Great tips. One of my favorite things to do on vacation is to get up before my family does, take a walk outside of my hotel and go wander for about an hour, hour and a half and take photos. Grab a coffee and baked goods before heading back. What lens did you bring on this particular trip? Beautiful shots btw. Thanks for sharing!
Great tip. It’s hard to beat my toddler waking up early, but the time will come 😁. I took the 35 Summicron type IV most of the time and the 50 Lux. On the Mamiya it was the 80mm 1.9 ✌🏻
Just when it gets interesting the video ends. I like seeing you stroll through the woods, taking pictures, but I was actually more interested in seeing the end result in LR (with some cropping since a lot of us watch CZcams on our smartphones) plus your opinion. I suggest a video that Casey Neistat released a long time ago about storytelling. That may also get up your ratings. This is not meant as bad comment but as constructive criticism to boost the good work and efforts you make. Keep it up 👍🏼✨
thanks for the feedback, greatly appreciated. I am a huge fan of Casey and indeed he is the absolute king of CZcams storytelling. I try to improve each video, but it's a continuous process. I hope since making this video and comparing it to my more recent ones, I did make some progress in flow and storytelling 😇
M11 way to go or SL 3 🙌👍🏻
Both great options ✌🏻
Nice idea, but too expensive and not easy enough for working. It will be an SL body and SL workaround. Sorry, my english is bad. Greets from germany. Carsten - old Villa Petersberg, 40 minutes far away from Wetzlar
One can dream 😊. The form factor does work on a Mamiya 7, so it’s not impossible. But maybe the electronics and digital sensor size is an engineering challenge
I had initial same issue with the X2d and my peak design anchors. but if you take the ends off the strap that comes with the camera the Peak Design anchors fit quite well and I've been using it like that walking around with zero issues and it's not going to drop /fall off.
That’s indeed the way to go to make it work. Thanks for sharing it ✌🏻
That first image result with the grey top and bottom plate and the black leather on the body............... Sexy. Hubba, Hubba!
They could not be further apart
Which differences stand out to you the most?
@@berndvandecruys Hi there - the sensor, Hass is MF. Tthe lenses, Hass has leaf shutter, good for sync at all speeds, the body Hass is not weather sealed at all. Leica has grip option and 4 zoom lenses to choose from - Hass has only new 2.5mm across the new range except for the 28p which is F4. The colours, Hass has HNCS - very lifelike - Leica focuses on Red, (good for B+W, and has a soft but sharp look The Leica has dedicated flash from Leica , the Hass relies on Nikon, - The LEica uses the same sensor and battery in the Q3 (which dies have a leag shutter) in fact the only thing the two cameras have in common is the battery compartment and the waiting lists - all good my friend. Pro here - Take care
I have a B/W question for you for the Leicas. Do you think a monochrome only sensor is worth it or do you prefer conversion from a colour one, so you can tweak with the colour channels ?
@@berndvandecruys Having ,(and I say 'only' in terms of I feel very fortunate to have had them both),- had the Q2 Mono and the Q3 colour I can't say for sure - but the Q2 Mono far outweighs the Q3 with its B+W selection in camera turned on - probably due to there being so much less in the filter array!!! Would I buy A Q3 mono though.... not sure. As a Pro I have a bunch of cameras in my arsenal for commercial, studio, social portraits and fashion mostly on location so have cameras which suit that need including two X2D's, one 907XCFV100c, all with the new 2.5mm lenses a Fuji GFX100II, a Fuji GFX50r, an SL3, a Q3, an M8 which used to belong to Audrey Tautou - yes her, and the one she used in the Chanel No 5 film given to her by Jean Pierre Jeunet and which she used for her own personal use for some time, a bunch of Instax printers and Instax cameras for proofing, and a whole big bunch of Fujifilm GX680's - and a couple of GWS690's - I do print a lot of B+W - but its better in my honest opinion to do as you say and adjust the colour channels for contrast in post- but I do feel that if you shot primarily B+W then a dedicated B+W camera - akin to a dedicated B+W film is going to produce more pleasing results in tonality and depth, not to mention sheer cracking clarity. Hope that helps.
Echt genoten van de foto's. Nog mooie plekjes in ons land die je me helpt te ontdekken.
Bedankt Frans! Heel leuk om lezen dat het inspirerend kan werken voor Belgische trips ✌🏻
I love the diopter adjustment on my SL2-S. Sometimes I'm shooting with my glasses, sometimes without. I know where to put the adjustment for each, and I can just do it without any fuss at any time.
If you need to switch a lot like that, it makes sense to have it readily available as a dial. ✌🏻

English is not my native language, so I have to speak slow 😁. A trip to Wetzlar is planned for September later this year 💯. I don’t know if they will make a Reporter version of the SL3, but that would be the perfect SL imo. ✌🏻
You pathetic ignorant know nothing a leaf shutter is a mechanical shutter dumbass
Which lens is this?
I used it mainly with the Leica 35 Summicron IV, King of Bokeh lens ✌🏻
I have the Hasselblad X2D and love it. It's slowed me down with my photography and yes the images are spectacular.
Great, what type of photography do you use it for?
Im really interested on this camera but this price 😢
Leica cameras tend to hold their value better than other brands. That could offset the initial price a bit. It is a great camera 💯
@@berndvandecruys The M cameras maybe, the M lenses mostly, but the SL line (form personal experience no) it devalues as all other mirrorless systems, which is more loss as prices are higher.
Every review I read, there is a general consensus about the Hasselblad's remarkable image quality. I wish I could afford this camera! I convert all my Sony 60mp files to lossless .dng and get a 40% reduction in file size. The new Hasselblad 90mm is now available and initial reviews have found it very special indeed!
I love my M10M, 28 and 50 Summilux’s. So much that the “kit” grew to a M10r, 24 Elmar and 50 APO. Then added the 21 SEM and 90 APO. I can’t imagine the bulk and weight of a dslr with those primes. I only carry 2 or 3 at a time…
That quite an impressive kit you’ve assembled there 👀. A monochrome digital M is on my bucket list of cameras to experience. How do you like your M10M?
Hasselblad is more of a studio camera is you ask me
The 907x maybe. The X2D with the IBIS wants to go outside 😎
So no opinion on either camera? In the beginning I preferred the Fuji, thinking I would be able to differentiate the bw shots of each camera but that was not the case!!
For me, the Leica M is the camera that I enjoy the most to do photography. But the Fuji is great value for money of course and the 16mm is a gorgeous lens. I am trying to get a M monochrom in a couple of months for a video. Really curious what a niche camera like that produces and if I can spot the difference. Stay tuned :-)
Thank you for the comparison. I felt the image comparisons were very compelling, preferring the Hasselblad images for the most part. I own an X2D and love it for portrait work. However, I was a Nikon user for years shooting documentary work and need to replace my Nikon D750. I’m concerned the Hasselblad auto focus isn’t fast enough, and wonder if the SL3 would fill in that gap. As @alexandrosflower mentions, the SL3 gives him more versatility than the Hasselblad. In the image with all the chairs in a row, I preferred the coolness of the SL3. I don’t gravitate towards warm tones in the first place but I felt the Hasselblad got it right in raw out of camera more than the SL3. Nothing that can’t be fixed in post as mentioned. For me it’s about the accuracy of the autofocus. @alexandrosflower do you have any comments about the SL3 vs X2D auto focus?
Technology wise, it should be fast enough. If not yet, a firmware update will only bring more improvements
@@berndvandecruys Thank you for your comments, and your videos!
I really like reading the experiences of other photographers, so thank you as well for sharing your perspective!
@@berndvandecruys Well, I’m considering a second camera as my Nikon D750 is discontinued but mostly it’s a beast to carry around. I was considering the Leica SL3, and it has an additional vertical hand grip. However, I feel that their image results are vastly different so wondering about that. I have been a Nikon user for so long and though loyal, the image quality just doesn’t compare. It’s such a big investment.
