"Why do theme parks exist?"
"How did theme parks come to exist?"
"WHO even made these theme parks exist?!"
These are the often-overlooked questions we dare to ask at TPSE (the channel formerly known as Park Ride History).
So join me as we explore the anomalous nature of theme parks, research the history behind them, and see how some of them (still) exist today.

5:17 Good lord. Were all 1950’s publications as rife with spelling errors as this Disney newsletter?
I am a Korean, and we had our own horrific past of slavery, but we enslaved our own people so no racial luggage. So maybe I do not get it. But for me, Aunt Jemima makes me think of strong, resilient women who made most of their situation, and persevered.
We used to be a proper country with a tobacco store in Disney World
Still dont understand what the big deal is w aunt jemima. I would think black people would be proud of having a black woman on a food product. Can’t please everyone
One major reason for the explosion of tobacco use in the '50s is that during WWII soldiers were issued cigarettes with their ratings. Millions of young men returned as nicotine addicts.
Aunt Jemima is Racist, Seriously? I guess they’re gonna change it to Pearl Milling Company’s Pancake House
it's a shame that Walt Disney smoked as much as he did, as it was lung cancer that would take his life before he was ever able to see his dream of Disneyland opening to the public.
Looks like Disney was better back then.
I never thought of her with a negative connotation. As a white dude I don't claim to understand the subtle racism that may be implied, she just always looked like a nice, loving lady. I guess i didn't see her as black.
People smoking cigarettes look stupid. But not as stupid as people who "vape".
Robert Deniro in the thumbnail?
Its racist plain and simple
Did you know, Disney Springs at Disney World in Orlando, has a fantastic Cigar Humidor? The Sosa Family, (refugees from Cuba) have a terrific cigar shop on the main strip. Since the Disney World Campus is smoke free, the Sosa shop has a small lobby area where you can smoke one of their fine cigars while the family spends your hard earned $10k
Thought of with affection - always.
At last, we have discovered the MACROPLASTIC
Aunt Jemima was the first pancake mix brand to come to Mexico, my grandmother's favorite. It's not only about the racist publicity, another aspect to look out for is the high sugar content which will put you in diabetes risk after some years.
I have memories of going to disneyland in the 80s and my mother chain smoking in lines while people would cough and clearly be upset. The very last time we went as kids in early 90s my mom was irritated she had to use a smoking area.
That phil collins breakdown was legit 👌🏾
Disney Dispensary, when? XD
Excellent work! 👌👍🚬
They should have a Dark Academia land
As a pipe and cigar smoker, I'm glad I'm doing my part to piss off all these Karens in the comments.
13:11 oh it did not
It did.
The food tasted better when the world was racist
Pearl Milling Company I was wondering what the hell that was. 😂
Ugh, it’s so annoying they edit out these things he from old media. I mean, I grew up with that in the cartoons and didn’t smoke. My kids now know how bad smoking is for you and some old cartoon is not gonna change their mind.
Tobacco companies were unrelenting in their drive to capture more and more Americans under their product’s most addictive ingredient, nicotine. Come the war, the cigs were almost free. One could purchase them at any Base /Post X for under $.35 a pack, easily, well into the 1970s. Every Sunday you could clip newspaper coupons that “entitled” the bearer to a free pack of whatever brand. Tobacco companies would eventually get the customers’ undivided addicted attention. And their full price payments.
Get over it. 80 year ago D day happened. They all smoked and won a world war.
Happiest place on earth my Snow-White ass!
Great video! Loved Disneyland as a kid in the 70’s. I still have some “A” tickets when you had to use paper tickets to get on rides. Anyway, I grew up in a smoking household. The car, the kitchen table, restaurants, airplanes, it was all a smoking section. Thankfully I do not smoke and can’t stand the smoke smell but as a kid I loved the tobacco smell when dad would open a fresh pack of Camels! I have a picture of him at Disneyland on their opening day!
was aunt jemima a slave?
Disney will have Merlins Magic Weed shop as soon at it becomes legal in Florida. Vote YES on 3 !
Except for weed,,,ah the good ole days
Thumb looks like he's hitting on a joint.
I miss when this country had a set of nuts.
They still have one at knotts.
3:34 aunt jemimina was real u racist
I was there and hated it even as a teenager.
Back when there were family values and common sense
At least the original pancakes sound pretty good. They were a multigrain pancake using wheat, corn, and rice, mixed with buttermilk and egg. Compare that to the current "Pearl Mill" mix which is basically just bleached white flour, sugar (yup, second ingredient is sugar), baking powder, salt and various additives to ensure freshness. You're supposed to mix that with water, oil and egg. At least we still have egg (which you have to provide yourself, sorry.) I doubt any historic "Aunt Jemima", if there ever was such a person, or any other good southern cook, would want anything to do with that mess.
Classic example of overthinking and then rushing to correct the mistake when they built WDW. Honestly think they are doing the same thing with the refurbishment of Splash Mountain.
Hate that they used the Haunted Mansion for the Nightmare overlay. I get the connection, I just prefer the classic ride.
It’s Si pronounced as SEYE OR SIGH not see Myerson. Geesh. It’s short for SImon.
Great vlog ! Funny all the negativity behind the vlog yet we want to legalize marijuana all over the country 😂 any smoke or vapor in your lungs or mouth is bad for you. So is bad food.

I remember going a lot as a kid. Whenever you walked under the Human People Mover "ride", you always had to be on the look out for people flicking their cigarette butts down on top of you. Accidental or deliberate.
I am in the mood for some pancakes
as a russian a can't understand what's wrong with aunt jemima: the picture of the woman looks almost like a photo, so there can be no racism there, so what is the problem?
F Russia.
In 2055 that shop will be a weed store
I don't get why Aunt Jemima is supposed to be offensive? She's a hard worker who cooks well. Now all the black product mascots have been cancelled. Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, and the Cream of Wheat guy. Now there's only white mascots like Quaker Oats guy.
