Used to play on the viaduct as a kid lift the inspection hatch climb down the metal ladder walk along the double scaffolding boards and walk round the top of the pillers, we had no fear it seems, my great uncle Jack was signalman at venn Cross so spent a lot of time in the signal box with him, used to flag steam trains down and hitch a lift to Taunton Station up with the driver and stocker, still have the station master's hat I was given in 1963, all still very vivid memories.

we was working near there 3 years ago, and if you go to the old station where its lived in, the owner will let you go and have a look at the tunnel. and you could see the other end,

I can remember this station when it was working in the mid 60s. It was actually quite busy on Summer Saturdays when the holiday camps in Seaton changed occupants. Trains would arrive from London and the Midlands on Platform 2, and passengers would change onto a Western Region branch line DMU train for Colyton, Colyford and Seaton on the curved southbound platform 3. There was a buffet between these two platforms and this got quite busy as people waited for connections. On the far side of the station was a milk depot, with sidings and tank wagons shunted by diesel engines. From Seaton Down Hill, I watched the very last train (a 6 car DMU, I think) leave from Seaton on March 7th 1966. Seaton Junction closed for passengers the same day.

The closure of the Taunton to Barnstaple line was one of the grossest acts of vandalism and short term thinking. With newer DMU trains arriving the issues with steam would have been overcome. Thanks for making these videos.

Nice to see. As a child my sister and I travelled with our Grandma on this railway line regularly.Brings back good memories of the steam trains.

Thank you for this footage. I have spent many a happy hour on that long bridge watching steam trains take a running start up Honiton Incline.

Nice video, thanks, this tunnel was partially infilled in early 2000s at the western end where a road passes above. I remember walking through it in 1990s when it was all open, a strange experience. I believe Castle hill tunnel on this line near South Molton is still un-altered.

Great film... the iron girders that spanned the piers remained until late 1971... how worthy of preservation it would be today..
