My dad and some of my other family got to see Keiko at the Oregon Coast Aquarium and I'm so happy to be an Oregonian and go visit the Aquarium and see the statue of Keiko just before heading into the tank that housed him and is now split up into three different exhibits and my great grandparents also use to live in Randolph's house at Oaks Park here in Oregon

I saw Keiko in the Oregon Coast Aquarium. I was a bit disappointed. The water was very foggy. He went up to the glass for a moment and then disappeared. I was maybe 3-4 years old . RIP , i will never forget

Keiko was an ambassador for his species. Because of that movie and the people who interacted with his sweet soul it changed hearts around whales. In my generation there is a great love for whales in the US. I worry about kids now so disconnected. We have no more ambassadors like Keiko and that is maybe for the best…. Maybe not.

but if the whale basically grew up in captivity sometimes freeing them back into the wild doesnt work cause they dont have the instincts or anything needed to survive. you actually shouldnt release animals raised in captivity back into the wild. its complex situation

Keep these WONDERFUL animals WILD. AROUND THEIR OWN KIND. In OPEN OCEAN. SO THEY CAN SOCIALIZE WITH THEIR FELLOW ORCAS. US HUMANS ALWAYS HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO SCREW THINGS UP, DON'T WE? OUR PLANET, OUR CLIMATE, ETC.

He died free! I dont care how they try and spin this as a tragedy. He had more space and more freedom in that last year than he ever did in that small tank they imprisoned him in. They should have carried on regularly feeding him (which it seems they did but not as often) but I truly think it was better for him to be out of there.

The kids that contributed to Keiko’s freedom and those which helped rehabilitate Keiko re enter the wild are his pod family. He knew those who would never reject him were his Killer Whale family. And Keiko will immortally be a part of many pod family’s among us in our hearts forever as a testament to all living mamals no matter how different we are.

  • @richardmatthews3522

This is so sad. When they saw it wasn't working they should have made him still free but have a huge real ocean structure and allow the care takers to still be there. They should have realized that the whale was raised in human care. The whale was domesticated. I believe it died from loneliness.

you can't release animals who have spent that long of a time in human captivity. but humans are emotional and stupid so of course we released him again. just because you come from the wild don't mean you belong in the wild. when you are use to such a comfortable 1st world life then you can't be released and you don't want to be released. humans are made to be in nature to and 99,99% of mental illness comes from the fact that we are not in the wild struggling daily for survival. if you grow up comfortable then you ain't gonna miss the uncomfortable even though you are born to be in the wild. it's a huge F you to the animal to just release them. either you kill them or you build them a better habitat but you don't release what has ben spoiled by humans.

Keiko a Male Killer Whale / Orca ( Orcinus orca ) they have a lifespan on ave of 30 yrs. With some wild males living to 60 yrs. Female Wild Orcas can live as long as 90 yrs. Hence Keiko was found deceased on Dec 12 2003 floating in a bay. Hence he was only 24 or 25 yrs old when Keiko passed away from Phenomena. Hence my sadness and frustration about the whole situation of capturing Wild Orcas for captivity. I just hope that Keiko found some happiness out there in the wild. Alibet Keiko was never accepted into any other Wild Killer Whale Pods. Yet perhaps as Male Orcas do they leave their Matericql Pod they were born into. To seek out females unrelated to them to breed with. Perhaps Keiko found a friend for a short time amongst the other Wild Killer Whale Pods. Now at least the capturing of Killer Whales is banned. 💪👃✨

This has always been so upsetting. I was actually blessed enough to see him at the Oregon Coast Aquarium as it was only about an hour away from where I live. Oh, and he uh... well he seemed pretty happy because he ended up freeing his own willy for all the see. Easily 4 ft! Lol Also I was around 12 at this time and asked my mom if it was his.... yeah. She told me that it appears to be. 😢 but I REALLY wanted to make sure... so im the process of my mom getting so embarrass, I just had to ask a worker to get confirmation.. 🙃 and yup! It sure enough was what everyone thought was. I'll never forget that and always cherishhis his memory. Also.... the aquarium they built from the ground up for him... yeah. It was torn down as soon as Keiko left.. I don't think that build was cheap! But ya all gone.

We are lucky Orcas are not “that much” vengeful. (North Spain excepted). These creatures possess the ability to strategize, communicate and are the absolute top dogs of the ocean. The fact they are so kind towards humans is almost incomprehensible. The fact they allow us to share on their side of the World without harming us, shows a level of intelligence rarely seen outside humankind. I think we have enough footage and the ability to record and watch them in the wild. Leave them be.
