Mid-Tier Tube Headphone Amp Comparison and Review
I agree with you! Man you are only like a week ahead of me. I did not want to spring for the official windscreen, but I also didn't want just some random cheap one, so I bought one meant for the e906/609. Ended up having to trim about 3/4" off the back of it. It's some nice dense foam and has a cool square look that somewhat mimics the design of the mesh area on the business end of the 421. I have a comparison video putting it up against the RE20, but I'm going to do another better one soon. The levels are way too low on that last video so it'll be removed once I have the new one done. Just wanted to say I 100% agree on the sound of this vs the SM7, and I even like it better than my RE20. If I had heard a comparison of the 421 vs the RE20 for just speaking, I probably would have just gotten a 421 originally. It's just a mic I've always wanted to have around, and I finally found a good deal one one. Versatile is definitely the word for it. I'm convinced you could put it on literally anything and it would sound good.
Thanks for sharing, i'm a MoOde lover myselve😊
Now it's look like Hifiman Sundara:))
I was always told that a "S" arm was used for heavier carts. Chek it out.
Most S arms are high to medium compliance. The weight or mass of the cart has more to do with the compatibility of compliance rather than the actual shape of the arm.
ho un technics sl1200 mk2 e dovrei montare una goldring g1042, specificano un angolo di tracciamento a 24 gradi, come regolo il vta? grazie
What are the original 1200s from the 70/80s called? That’s what I got. They still work perfectly. Crazy.
Magni amps are terrific. Act now while the magni heretic is $59!!! USD on the schiit website. So so worth it for the price.
I feel the reason for the VTA offset among old models of SL-1200 is just the thickness of the supplied mat. The MK2’s came with the thickest ones, they were 6 mm, I think there were also 4 or 5 mm mats (with different part number). I know the newest rubber ones were just 3 mm and I’m guessing that felt slipmats were likely only 2 mm, but honestly I haven’t measured them. I remember I’ve read on a forum that the new models 1200G and GR are supplied the 3 mm rubber mat, and unlike the G model which has the platter taller thanks to its brass upper part, the 3 mm mat was not thick enough for some cartridges on the GR, so their owners had to use either spacers or two mats (or higher ones if they found it), the original 6 mm mats were not easy to find or they were quite pricey. (The arm assemblies on the new models are actually different from the old ones, so in that case a different height wouldn’t surprise me.)
Good video sir
Having what I suspect is the exact same problem upgrading to V9. Thanks so much.
Tks
Very impressive! I have (a US made) old school PV-4C that's louder than Linda Lovelace ....
I make a Mogami W2497 with KLE Classic connectors. The Cable is $3.60 per ft. plus the $50 for the connectors. This cable will out do all those.
I recently made two pair of Mogami 2497 and it is very close to the LC-1. The 2497 is a bit more flexible, but man it is huge. You do need the right connectors with it because normal RCA connectors won’t do. But overall it is almost nearly as good as the LC-1 in SQ.
@@stereoazimuth I would have thought the the LC-1 would be the same thickness as the Mogami since BJC started with Canare LV-77S cable and it is the same thickness as the Mogami. The KLE Connectors make the biggest difference.
@@kevindillinger3699 The LC-1 is more like the Belden 1505F. They just use the heavy double braiding as the Canare LV-77S. I just had to get out my calipers. The LC-1 is 7.4mm in diameter, and the Mogami W2497 is 7.75mm. The LC-1 is much stiffer though.
The Ortofon OM Pro headshell makes the left and right alignment challenging. All I have is a tip, no predominant headshell.
That does make it challenging if you don’t have a point of reference to align.
I’ve noticed every 1200 model I’ve had (from 6 MK2’s to now 4 M3D’s -2 being Mint) they’ve all had play at the cartridge collar. I used to visually adjust them straight, but now I use a little flat level. It is what it is :-/ But it can be maintained. You nailed it by saying it’s from the locking nut.
All of the Freya line does not have enough gain
It’s 1x unless you use the highest, then it’s 4x. And 4x should be plenty of gain.
Right on! I have an old 1987 Mesa Boogie 50 Caliber 4 -EL84 tubes. I put new power tubes and amp works great. As soon as I installed the tube plate brackets the amp is really loud and noisy in lead mode and power tubes all four are volcano red hot! I have had this happen before but and thought I had bad tubes. Thank you, this video allowed me, to sell or keep this amp.
Excellent explanation - clear and detailed thank you. Getting some hum through my LX-380 so have just ordered one of these so fingers crossed it solves it (I already tried an Audiolab DC blocker but didn’t improve things on the hum front. I’m keeping the Audiolab tho as (and I may be imagining it) I’ve convinced myself there is a small improvement in sound quality.
DC blocker may help if you have the transformer humming physically, not through the audio path. Let me know if the Ground Defender works.
@@stereoazimuth the Ground Defender did not work, sadly so have returned or a refund. Oh well worth a try but back to square one!
Who ate all the pies.......?
A: Piethagoras.
A nice and simple solution, I was in the throws of making a linear supply, however I will have to try this. Apart from me replacing the barrel connectors with USB ones as my target DAC is an SMSL 5V device, I will probably add some clip on ceramic cores and a 0.1uf ceramic cap straight across the output jack. Those big electro"s and iron core inductor are great at low frequencies, but not so with very high frequencies. for best results with the 0.1 put is as close as possible to the output jack, with the shortest leads, if one gets into radio and RF you soon learn this stuff.
@@Douglas_Blake_579 Yes, definitely not something to hang off a computers USB port, the DAC I speak of has a separate USB port just for power, so I will have to carefully choose the power supply to suit. Some supplies are more happy starting up into such a load as they ramp up, so maybe happy, as opposed to just shoving the cap box into an already powered up supply. I've done something simular with a Raspberry Pi 400, so it could better handy a hard drive starting up, hanging off a USB port, without the cap I had all sorts of strange crashes etc.
I do agree I would not put directly on a ISB port on a computer or laptop, but a direct wall supplied power supply. That dead short will only be very quick, but a lower amp out will take more time to charge those caps.
@@Douglas_Blake_579 Build one, try it, and see if you can kill a power supply.
Very good. A couple of things. The case must be metal and continuous [no gaps]. The limit on voltage is limited by the voltage rating of the capacitors. A fuse might not be a bad thing to include.
Not really. You can make a case out of plastic. I don’t see why not. And yes, limited on voltage of the caps. I do mention this on the video. A fuse is fine, but most units running g DC don’t have a fuse. And then the rating will change depending on voltage and current draw. A fuse would only protect the power supply in case of a short.
A traditional pi filter uses a capacitor on either side of the choke. It's more optimized because the choke has less 'work' to do and the overall capacitance is the same.
In a traditional PSU, yes. We are coming straight off the SMPS though, that already should have some capacitance on that end.
5:38 I think someone else does not know what a choke is. i.e. you
Okay.
Yep I've built several similar for myself and friends but 8 amp and multiple outputs I run my DACs ,PreAmps,Tubes,CD players, Streamer. Best Sound I've heard
Basically this is a 2nd order LC filter with a frequency of 30Hz. This also explains why the "wobble" of your linear source (which is either the mains frequency or twice the mains frequency) is still slightly visible. If using plugs I would invest the few extra cents and install a fuse and an asymmetric TVS diode. The TVS diode will act as an reverse polarity and overvoltage protection and with overvoltage for too long will go short and protect the expensive capacitors and preventing the ElectroBoom effect.
Higher power caps yes, because there would also be a big inrush current.
Slow Blow fuse
@@Douglas_Blake_579 The SMPS already have a fuse. Done.
Hi - Great video. Who makes the 8826 op amp? It is not obvious when searching, Thanks.
Analog Devices. And it’s not an 8826, it’s an 826. AD826.
I love your hair and that gorgeous silver beard!
*100 x 2. Not 200 x 2. Less talk, more facts. AND you obviously know nothing about meters. LOL! Efficient speakers lows are just fine. Nice rumbles. I adore mine. My ears like it.
My background is in radio. I know plenty about meters. It does work to show VU output and not VU input. I liked the sound of the amp as well. And I have to talk, otherwise the video would have lots of silence. Sorry.
Hi, i am currently using preamp with psvane 12au7 tube. Is it posible to use adapter on vali2++ with 12au7 tube ?
Yes. With the right adapter. Most list by the tube you need to the socket. eg "12AX7 to 5670" or "12AX7 to 6N3". A 12AX7 is the same pinout as a 12AU7, but the AU has lower gain. All the 12A*7's are about the same just with different gain levels.
Although I think the best sleeper tube for the Vali 2 ++/Vali 3 is a Sylvania 5670. No adapter needed.
What do you recommend for a DAC for this?
Schiit Modi+ or Modi MB2.
I have a Fluance RT85 hooked up to a Schitt Mani. Which has a long RCA cord hooked up to some Edifier powered speakers. I need to know how to start using headphones. My Mani does not have headphone connection. Do I go RT85 to Mani to Magni to Edifier? And plug my headphones into the Magni? Is that how that works? And if so, would that decrease sound quality of my records in the powered speakers bc if the additional piece of equipment added?
Out of the Mani into a headphone amplifier, like a Magni.
How about a Z shaped tonearm!!
What’z that?
You need an other "mic" on a boom right in front of your forehead .
One is a camera, so…..
I really like these BJ cables, as well as the cables from Worlds Best Cables, both great companies. My system today, now consists mainly of the BJ Belden LC-1 cables. My XLR cables are still the WBC Mogami lineup. I really like the quality of the BJ's, HD and fantastic connectors, that will not break the bank.
I’m going to be trying some Mogami and some BJ XLR cables. Stay tuned!
@@stereoazimuth In the past two months, my stereo system is all new, ToneWinner AD HiFi series. I replaced my BJ cables for a pair of Mogami 2549, and the sound became a bit veiled, and it was noticeable, the sparkle and clarity was diminished by quite a bit. I was honestly quite surprised at the results. The BJ LC1 cables went back in.
What adapter is needed for the ecc84
I’m also having hum issues w my Quicksilver & tried both this device & the DC Blocker w no luck. Any advice or suggestions?
The design of that one is just terrible. Mediocre OPT’s, and not enough shielding l, and then the horrible ground scheme. This is why I SOLD MY QS and got a DNA Starlett.
@@stereoazimuthThanks for the info! I ended up getting an Aegis so I also think my QS’s days are numbered
Hi! Genuine question and thanks for the video, what is the reasoning for wanting to change/switch needles during a session? This will help me understand so much.
Different carts? You may not want to run your high dollar cart on low to medium quality vinyl or play in the background.
Thanks for clarifying this, my friend!
The new Vali3 now has 100v rails and a 117dB noise floor. This mean better linearity...which means less negtive feedback..which means more natural sound and better dynamics. Its beating my Jotenheim 2 on most subjective metrics. Like I could sell the Jot and never look back. Please get your hands on a Vali 3 and compare and review. I thik you"ll be shocked!
Every indication says the Vali 3 is great. I have not heard one yet, but I'd already recommend it.
@@stereoazimuth I just paid $100 for a WE396A tube and boy oh boy. Worth it all day long. It takes the amp up another notch or two. Vali 3 is truly operating at least a couple levels above it's price class.
For the looks of the cable going into a schiit amp is what I am looking for. My setup has the amps in the open and it would be nice to get a better looking cable without having to use shrink wrap and a tube to cover the power cable.
2000rpm is key here
Hello When you talk about the Vali 2 , having « harsch top end « . Are you talking about Vali 2 + or ++ or the Original Vali 2. Cause the Original Vali 2 has smoother top ends then the + ++. Cause some review put the sound of the Piety in par with the OG Vali 2
The 2+ and the 2++. Because yes, the 2 has a smoother more rolled off top end. The Piety is more laid back than the Vali 2 as well as a bit more mid-centric. I think the Piety is much more enjoyable amp though with more clarity.
I wasn't that impressed with the Piety because I like to listen to my music really loud. Pietus Maximus tho........now that's the stuff dreams are made of.
I have not heard the Pietus Maximus yet, at least the final version, but the one prototype I heard was a good improvement. I have a final version coming my way soon.
@@stereoazimuth I've noticed, because I got my hands on a hd6xx finally, the there's a serious synergy between that and the PMax. 660s2 also sounds stellar, but some of my others not as much. Just wish the little Piety pushed more sound thu it.....then again....I haven't tried it with the 6xx...

Hope you can get your hands on the new Kensei GoBar version and review it. It's supposed to be another level above the regular GoBar. At $449 it ought be for the money.
