    Poor Things is not the better Barbie, they are both very different and have unique themes and messages. you complain about Ken saying flat and cringe phrases, but actually that is exactly what it's supposed to be. Ken went to the real world and read "feminist" books about "patriachy" where authors share their very flat, black-and-white-ish view on men and women in this world. It's that kind of book where the authors overtly just hate men and think that every man is still benefitting from patriarchy and women are always systematically oppressed (don't get me wrong I don't deny sexism. I am sure every woman has been affected by at least some kind of sexism which is very tragic and repressive to say the least, but it's not that black and white either, is it?). Ken thinks that this is how the real world actually works and tries to establish those structures into barbie world. The joke is that the barbie world already depicts a matriarchy where Kens aren't worth anything and Barbies are systematically superior. the barbie world already inhabits everything radical feminists criticize about the real world but the other way around, thus displaying the fact that in reality it is not as black and white some people think it is. The message then is: Men and women shouldn't be treated any differently regardless of their gender. It is against p-/matriarchy in every way possible. Poor things on the other hand shows that men should not abuse innocent and weak women for their own personal joy. It criticizes the power some men have and displays how powerful, in contrast, sexual attraction can be. Men want to abuse Emma Stone's character for their own lust, but ultimately she makes the same mistakes our modern society criticizes about men in power in order to give men a taste of their own medicine. Her mistakes are legitimized by the film because those men are disgusting and she is just innocent playing with the rules given to her. The message then is: don't abuse your power to treat anyone like shit and learn to accept a "no" as a "no". Poor Things teaches men in power to treat women respectfully whereas Barbie teaches everyone that it's hard to be a human. Men and women all have their unique problems respectively but we all should be treated equally regardless of gender. Poor Things is a feminist movie whereas Barbie is woke-criticism whithout spreading conservative ideals. (But I get why people think these two try to get the same message across)

    I’ve worked on a Amanda Seales music video in the early 2000s never met her directly but I remember people ( all this was all types of people black,white, etc) saying she was not a nice person and is extremely mean and rude to them. This was way before she was famous but after all these years is still getting the same criticism says a lot about her character. She fooled you. And use black female empowerment as a way too control your emotions. The music video I’m talking about is Amanda Diva “Neon” on CZcams. I did the special Effects. I’m an Emmy award winning editor now.

    I never forgot how Amanda Seales falsely accused Myron Rolle, a former NFL football player, Rhode Scholar, and neurosurgeon of sex harassing women... he ultimately prevailed. Although Seales issued an apology, she should have known in a post Me Too world how detrimental that type of allegation could have been and how it could have torpedoed a man's career and reputation, especially for a blk man. I went to college with Myron and I was very surprised by her allegations. Frankly, I am still surprised Rolle didn't take civil action.

  • @evolutia1
    @evolutia1 Před měsícem

    People did produce the receipts though. I think Amanda Seales herself is anti-black. When you defend someone like Shaun King over Tamir Rice's mother taking an issue with him raising money in her son's name, but the money never went to the family, that's the truth. You can literally see Amanda herself making this post. Questioning "Why is Tamir Rice's mother questioning all of these activists," when it was mainly Shaun King. Then you have her longtime friendship with Lenard (charlemagne) who he himself has admitted to drugging women and when people pointed this out to Amanda, she said, I'm not going to cancel anyone blah blah blah, while pretending to care about victims of sexual assault. If that is her standard then she wouldn't have that friendship with him. Next you have her defense of Jussie Smollett when she called his hoax noble essentially spitting in the face of those who actually are victims of hate crimes. She was on the real when she said this with her whole chest. So even with receipts, fans of hers are ignoring these facts. It would be one thing if she ever apologized for things like this but she never does and anyone that points this out is apparently being mean to her. She's not being randomly attacked. For me, the Jussie Smollett excuses and defense from her, was enough for me to say no thank you to her. Hopefully one day she can mature, but people need to stop enabling her and pretending there is no evidence for what Amanda has done.

  • @tbabyaustin
    @tbabyaustin Před měsícem

    I agree with you, but I understand why people don't like her. Most people say they want the truth, but don't. Look at how so many of our people say things like they didn't do all of that to Harvey Weinstein, when talking about Pill Cosby or R(ape) Kelly. Our people will protect the despicable behavior of black men but get so bothered by the truth. So when Amanda speaks up, she's another Angry Black Woman. We're not given space to be angry because we have to carry the weight of the world that's put on black men. Who's carrying us?

She is not a victim. She has even admitted on a interview that she doesn't 'play well with others'. She and most people in this world have to be LIKEABLE and work well with others even if they are black or women. She DOESN'T get a pass to being rude to others just because she is pro-black. And being pro-black doesn't give a person the license to be rude and unlikeable. Being a team player is an REQUIREMENT on most jobs in this country. And being likeable is important when dealing with others. And this has NOTHING to do with white supremacy. We, as black people, should NOT make it an acceptable standard to be rude to each other.

    I think this whole thing is CRAZY! I feel like we are just replicating the structures and hierarchy of the oppressor. It seems as if the prerequisite for being in Hollywood, entertainment, or the upper echelon of business spaces is to keep your mouth shut and go with the flow. They never like truth tellers, or whistleblowers, or anyone who will call out injustices, and not just go with the flow. It’s interesting that you mention we are in a season of a lot of awards and events in the culture. In light of that, it almost seems like these pieces were meant to put out a press release not to invite her anywhere because they don’t want an outspoken person like her to disrupt or expose their shenanigans. That is the only “crime “I could ever accuse Amanda of… but telling the truth should never be a crime. And that is all she has ever done: tell the truth. I literally ran to her channel this morning to show some of her recent videos some love. I’m so glad she has a private member community of supporters. It was a comedic movie that still showed a purpose. There's a reason why it won't sweep the Oscars: It's a comedy movie. That will never change. But it's still a good funny movie that does portray a message. You really have to watch the movie to be able to make this statement.

      If anything’s it’s giving colourblind and just so lazy The movie added a bunch of one dimension characters of colour whose experiences are not represented in barbie Obviously I didn’t expect barbie to really highlight feminism in a nuanced way but come on. This is not a win it’s just lazy and it’s giving ‘we had women if colour so it’s inclusive and representative’ And barbie is a comedy but so is poor things and it won 8 Oscar’s poor things took a more comedic and theatrical approach it’s still white feminism but was better than barbie and had a more fleshed out cast even though it wasn’t as diverse Barbie was just a hype movie I believe a cheap movie about feminism but only adding one myopic perspective on it Kinda of harsh but that’s the truth, would go to say that it showed men’s issues better with the whole Ken song

Barbie broke so many conventions, both in form and in "content," AND managed to be extremely commercial (despite the far-right men-children fundamentalist's loud cry; it actually helped it). There were far more layered nods to our society's status quo and rap shee..., I mean, History than meets the eye, granted. Cheers!!!

    You say Barbie’s dialogue was cringe in the clip, but since you haven’t watched the film you don’t realise that she’s not being genuine, she’s lying to him. It’s very much intentional.

    I hope you redo this after watching Barbie because just only watching one fully and then only basing the other from clips isn't a good approach.

    I totally get that people are making loads of comparisons about these two movies but I think that they’re both so different and set out to explore different things to different audiences and I really think you should see both films in full before discrediting Barbie. Personally I just didn’t see Poor Things as a feminist movie mostly because I don’t think that you can take a book written by a dude turned into a movie written by a dude (as hilarious and brilliant a dude as he may be) and directed by a dude about a women’s experience and call it earnestly feminist. I think poor things had feminist undertones but I saw it more as a movie about becoming a person unashamedly and falling in love with life and the world. I preferred poor things as well but I thats in part because of my own aesthetic preferences and I still think Barbie is an incredibly well made movie that did its best to be thoughtful and apt given the fact that it was made in part by Mattel and had to cater to a younger audience as well as an older one. Definitely worth the watch, yes it’s cornier than something like poor things but making a movie more accessible to younger audiences and non-cinephiles doesn’t make a film worse!!!

    I really liked Poor Things but as fascinating as Bella Baxter is her journey for which there is a lot to take and live by. But is also an almost impossible one. Bella is set up as a special one. Even her copycat made by “God” doesn’t develop the way she does under the same circumstances. Bella is smart and special but her baby, clean slate brain doesn’t understand social rules or why follow them. She finds her own path in her blissful ignorance but determined and courageous personality, even finds pleasure as a sex worker adapting methodical ways to embrace sex, which felt so unrealistic to me, specifically by how strange, masochistic, even pedophilic, and sometimes unattractive men who use her are. Nothing creates a trauma reaction in her expect briefly seeing poor people starving to death. I find the journey of Barbie more relatable, someone bored with routine to the point of meeting an existential crisis and accepting a less perfect but more real and something we all go through. The question of whether what’s my purpose if someday I’m facing death and I’m everyday growing older in a society that deams me progressively obsolete as I age.

    In my countryman’s movie the heroine lives her life tackling bad men, but meeting good men as well. Not all men are toxic and inferior. There’s patriarchy in the film, but no verbal mention of it. The movie is very good and communicates its messages exactly because it’s not preachy and the protagonist is not a caricature as she seems in the beginning.

    But how can you make that statement without actually watching both films?

    • @leadinglikealady
      @leadinglikealady Před 4 měsíci

      In the video I mentioned that the clips in trailers/social media basically told me what the Barbie movie wanted to say (its message). And based on that already I felt they told too much. Watching the "Poor Things" trailers doesn't give you any hint about message being delivered, but when you watch it all in context it packed a greater punch IMO.

      @@leadinglikealady I would argue that's still not properly informed statement. I am very excited about seein "Poor Things" for months now, but I am afraid that me being a minority is one of the issue of the movie being better in delivering message than "Barbie".

      @@leadinglikealadyI don’t think that the Barbie trailers did the movie justice. I think it’s odd to compare two movies when you have only seen one. You need context to get a message. Poor Things was a beautiful film, but a lot of the scenes made me very uncomfortable with all of the sex, considering that she was a child. And so much of the film was centered around her having sex.
