Switching into Biz Admin at UCI
Hi friends! My name is Claudia and I am a recent Business Admin grad :-) During my time in college, I worked as a Peer Academic Advisor (PAA) aka a student counselor where I gained a lot of insight on the change of major process at Merage and other business admin related stuff, so if you have any questions regarding how to switch in I gotchu!! BA is one of the most competitive majors to switch into and there’s really not much public information on what determines whether a student gets in or not. Grades/GPA is definitely a huge factor (since the application basically only asks for those things) but from the video, you can see it’s definitely possible to still switch in even if you don’t have an insanely high GPA. Thank you to my friendz Annette, Brandon, and Shirley for being part of my video :3

My anxiety has been killing me in thoughts about how I'll fare in the course, I'm a poor performer in school, and I loathe math. So the tips about course pairings do come in handy. I will ask though, in its entirety how's the rigor of the program? I know it may be different between schools, but I feel some general info about what to expect would be a great help to what I'm about to get into.

    • @claudiuhvuu
      @claudiuhvuu Před 3 lety

      Hi there! In my opinion, I really don't think the program was THAT bad. At least at UCI, the more math-heavy courses had a generous curve that helped most students pass and there was also a fair amount of upper division electives that were "easier" that helped cushion your GPA. For me, those easier courses were more Organizational Behavior type of classes but again it's different everywhere!

    Hello, I recently came across your videos and found them extremely helpful! I am currently an undeclared freshman at UCI and was looking for a career in Social Media Marketing or Public Relations. I noticed that the only way to declare an emphasis in Marketing is to transfer into Business Administration. However, it is so competitive, nearly impossible, to transfer into that major. On the other hand, Business Economics is much easier to transfer into but the material taught is different and it's not even under the UCI business school. I was wondering if you have any advice on the transferring process; and if I'm unable to transfer into Business Admin, do you think being a Business Economics major will affect my chances of landing a career in marketing?

      @claudiuhvuu Před 3 lety

      Vicki C. Hi there! I’m so happy you found my vids helpful :-) I actually have a video coming soon about switching into Bus Admin so be on the look out for that! But to answer your question, your major really doesn’t affect whether you can get into marketing or not. Most of the job opportunities for bus admin and bus econ are very similar- if not the same. However, what does matter is your real world experience (internships, personal projects, club experiences, etc) so as long as you can get those opportunities on your resume you should be able to get a career in marketing. I’d also recommend checking out clubs like Marketing Association on campus to get more insight in the field!

    Hi! I know business admin at UCI requires you to choose an emphasis, but does your emphasis say on your diploma? I heard it is important to specialize for business majors. If your emphasis doesn’t say on your diploma, do employers even care about it? Also how do you think about UCI undergrad business admin in the job market? Also, I think it’ll be great if you make a video with a person who changed their major to business admin at UCI and talk about their process of changing major!

    • @claudiuhvuu
      @claudiuhvuu Před 4 lety

      블루치즈 블루치즈 Hi! Your emphasis actually doesn’t even appear on your diploma so I would say it doesn’t matter too much (it’s just more of a graduation requirement) however I will say that for some technical careers like accounting, employers do care that you’ve taken the necessary classes and emphasized in it bc there are specific class requirements to get your CPA (accounting certification). UCI is surrounded by many corporations that directly recruit out of the business school which make internships very accessible but it’s still a young program (less than 10 years old) with a growing alumni network so nationally, it may not be as well known. That’s a great idea thanks for the suggestion!! 😊

      @user-gd8zo4cb4r Před 4 lety

      clauditv hey! Thanks for answering! I have another question! Some people say undergraduate in business is too surface level. What do you think? Do you think you learned a lot in business major that would help in the real world? Lastly, for all the internship opportunities you mentioned, is it provided for all the other majors as well?

    • @claudiuhvuu
      @claudiuhvuu Před 4 lety

      블루치즈 I would say to get the most out of being a business major you have to do things outside the classroom. Most of my knowledge came from the jobs I worked and the working professionals I connected with outside of school. The major itself is very broad bc of the nature of business (esp at an undergraduate level) but there are a lot of opportunities for research, clubs, & internships that allow you to go deeper. To your 2nd question, it honestly depends on the major - the opportunities for something like engineering is vastly different than something like biology but I will argue that it is “easier” to find job opportunities for business students bc the demand is just higher.

Just know that when applying to the major, there’s no personal statement or interview process, it’s strictly based on GPA and the grades you get in the required business classes to apply to the major. Also, there’s no limit to how many times you can apply. I know some people who end up getting in on their 3rd try! Good luck 😊

      @claudiuhvuu Před 4 lety

      Manav Patel hi! I personally didn’t think it was too challenging. I felt like my work load was significantly less compared to other majors but I will say the calculus, finance, & accounting classes were pretty difficult. I also felt like business admin students have an easier time getting classes because our major is smaller so there’s less people fighting for spots but for someone who ISNT in the major, it would be difficult because they would have to wait for the major restriction to lift then fight for the classes. It is impacted to switch into business administration but since you’re already in the program, that shouldn’t be a problem for you. Sorry if that was confusing at all 😅
