Polokwane Airshow 2024
After spending this past weekend attending the Polokwane airshow, I was impressed with the organisation and welcoming that the members of the media received from the organisers. The reality is that from a continuity perspective all airshow organisers should appreciate that the more favourable the media reports are, the more likely positive reports and excellent pictures that will be published. In South Africa most airshow organisers are good at what they do and of course I am aware that often this is a thankless job, but now and again airshow organisers and officials at these events behave in an anti-social manner and this will cause serious damage to their next event due to negative reporting. What also made this airshow unique was the ad hoc debrief at the hotel where most of the pilots, media and officials stayed for two nights. At this spontaneous de-brief that was attended by around 30 people, I was impressed by the significantly positive comments that came from different persons involved in the production of the airshow. I sincerely hope that other airshow organisers will start taking my comments seriously and up their game for the next airshow they organise.

Why would you cross the Atlantic Ocean from Africa and land in Florida when Maine is actually closer to Africa? Why would you not take the shortest route across the Atlantic?

This is called "Political entertaining" for BRICS partners. Where the useless SA airforce and government knows it doesn't have the money for it. Nearly all our aircraft are mothballed, old and unserviceable due to zero maintenance contracts and competency. Ontop of the annual budget cuts which make SA defence for a laughing stock. Viva...

Well, it's no A400M, but if the budget could potentially be increased to only afford this instead of the Atlas, it's still better than 60+ year old Flossies...
A400M is more expensive to buy and maintain. KC-390 also has a higher availability, faster maintenance and cheaper costs. You need to think it's not one or another one, we could be talking if it's better to have 6x KC390 or 3x A400M.

Budgets and couch cash aside; is a jet cargo plane suited to off-formal-airport landings that would be required for landing on grass, dirt or temporary bush strips along our borders or in the event of *scary thought* actually needing to participate in combat? Tar & concrete airports are fairly easy to control FOD, birds, wildlife etc but on a dirt strip, not so much. One stone or bird and bye bye engine. There is a reason that even the big boys still fly prop cargo planes. Yeah yeah, the big boys have both for Airport to airport then prop for airport to airfield and even bigger budgets but we don't so can't afford both... OK we can't afford any but hey...
This plane is prepared for semi-prepared dirt runways. A very common situation in the Brazilian Amazon. It was designed by order of the FAB precisely to replace its C130.
They fly old prop cargo planes because the cost to develop a new cargo was very high. If it was only a matter of engine we would have modern C130 competitors already, but we don't. The A400 it's a different category of cargos and a lot of the buyers are discontent with the maintenance problems.
I understand your concern, but don't worry. The C-390 underwent all types of tests for its certification, including on dirt tracks. (The position and height of the engines were designed to avoid danger from debris). There are videos of landing and takeoff tests on these types of runways. The most important thing is that in addition to being new, low maintenance cost, it flies faster, higher, carries more cargo, more technological, being superior and cheaper than the C-130, in addition to being multi-platform, just exchange or add kits depending on the mission. 😉👍
