Sewing Tools: How to use a Zipper Jig, Seam Jumper and Japanese Screw Hole Punch!
Sewing Tools: How to use a Zipper Jig, Seam Jumper and Japanese Screw Hole Punch!
Today, I will show you how to use some of my favourite sewing tools: a Zipper Jig, Seam Jumper and a Japanese Screw Hole Punch!
A Zipper Jig attaches zipper pulls to zipper tape, or zipper by the yard, and very easily. In the past, I just attached them by hand, but we all know that sometimes that takes a few passes and can still end up uneven. Now I am sold on this Zipper Jig from Green Fox 3D! Here's the link if you are curious:
greenfox3d.com/products/foldable-zipper-jig
The next sewing tool I demonstrate is the Seam Jumper, again from Green Fox 3D, you can find it here:
greenfox3d.com/products/presser-foot-lifter-tool
They sell them in sets of TWO! giving you two sizes at once!
Seam Jumpers, also known as Hump Jumpers or Presser Foot Lifters, help you sew over all kinds of heavy seams and layers that can make your sewing machine skip stitches or break needles.
Last of all, I will show you my Japanese Screw Hole Punch, or Hole Punch Cutter, Book Drill or Push Drill, and the other ways you can put your holes in your leather, vinyl or cork for your rivets or Chicago Screws by using a Mini Punch set or Punch Pliers. I'll let you know my favourite way!
I purchased my Screw Hole Punch from PacCana Enterprises:
www.paccana.com/product/888/notions/sewingaccessories/hole-punch-cutter
and my Mini Punch set from Emmaline Bags:
emmalinebags.com/products/mini-punch-set-6-sizes

    Could you glue the cork down each length instead of sewing it?

    • @MrFranklinBeans
      @MrFranklinBeans Před rokem

      Thing is, I don't really want to have 2 sets of stitching on each side. Maybe tape? Using suede instead of cork on my bag, along with cotton. Thank you for your video! Very helpful!

    • @lanyoshandmade
      @lanyoshandmade Před rokem

      Yes, if you have a good glue for your cork or suede. I’d test it myself to see if it “sticks” and stays over a few days, doesn’t dry up or crack and fail, is bendable. I alternate depending on my mood between lots of stitching lines to one on each side. I have used DST too instead of sewing but I don’t know how permanent that is, so I add in a line of stitching. Perhaps a DST for leather would be a stronger “stick”. Thanks for watching! 🤗

    • @MrFranklinBeans
      @MrFranklinBeans Před rokem

      @Lányos Handmade does it really matter if it doesn't stick very long? I just need it to hold long enough to sew it down, right?

    • @lanyoshandmade
      @lanyoshandmade Před rokem

      Oh yes definitely! I wasn’t sure it you wanted to glue only or not. 😊 Definitely, I have used some DST to save on stitching and then sewed once on each edge to finish it off! Definitely ✅

    • @lanyoshandmade
      @lanyoshandmade Před rokem

      I haven’t posted a video about that yet, sorry! I plan on using them for a future pattern though. I’ve seen a couple of ways, one is like a D ring tab. Attach the bridge to your bag. Slide the strap through and sew it to itself. The other way was more decorative, the bridge was attached and the strap just run through and hanging loose with a strap end. Of course with that one the strap was sewn to the bag above and below the bridge. Of course you could use rivets instead of sewing with either way. I hope that makes sense!

      I have Janomes, an HD3000 and a MC8200 and a 3160QDC, and Singer vintage machines, 421G and 500. The 3160Qdc is not the best for bag making. I think the key fobs have been sewn on the HD3000.

  • @sailorgirlk1
    @sailorgirlk1 Před rokem

    How do you position the zipper to face the outside of the bag? Do you fold the zipper?

    • @lanyoshandmade
      @lanyoshandmade Před rokem

      Hello! This zipper is not folded at a right angle, although some methods do have you fold the zipper at a right angle to make sure it stays out of the SA. I think I might have even done that with one of the pouches I did a video of here too. In this video, I sewed the zipper tape on RST with the fabric from end to end, 3:48 and 5:16. I stayed out of the SA when stitching up the sides and topstitching, 9:05 and 11:04. Also, I made sure that in the end the zipper teeth were facing the outer fabrics 12:03. I have seen others insist on facing their zipper teeth towards the lining fabrics, but I have always had more success with the zipper teeth facing towards the other fabrics so that when I turn the pouch the zipper teeth are already facing up and out properly. I hope that helps and Happy Sewing!

    • @sailorgirlk1
      @sailorgirlk1 Před rokem

      @@lanyoshandmade thanks, I have noticed also that other tutorials tell you to have the zipper face towards the lining. I guess to clarify, and where I’m having trouble is near the end. The part where you face your zipper towards the fabric. Does it need to lie flat or is the zipper folded over in order to sew it together? I’m not sure if this makes sense or not.

    • @lanyoshandmade
      @lanyoshandmade Před rokem

      Hi again! That's ok! I like "bag chat"! I have followed the method to have the zipper face the lining. It isn't wrong, it's just wrong for me. Over many years of sewing I have noticed some things gain popularity, lose and then gain again. I think it is all based on the teacher conveying the idea, the sewist's ability to follow it, then it can come down to machines and materials too as to whether one method is better than another. It's all an individual choice of what works for you. A lot of sewists have problems with the zipper being swallowed up at the ends. My first did too. In this video I was using small lightweight plastic teeth zippers for small pouches and they were first sewn flat from edge to edge of the fabric so they were able to bend on their own after in the SA. After that I did not topstitch into the end seam allowances and made sure that the teeth were not sewn into the seam allowance, just the flimsy zipper tape at the end. If you use zipper tabs, they can't be sewn into the seam allowance neither. That takes care of it so it isn't eaten up at the ends. I do have another video, where the zipper tape was bent at the end 90 degrees down so that it was not sewn into the SA at all. Perhaps that method would be more to your liking, especially if you have heavier zippers? czcams.com/video/2mVCrYMHanM/video.html Have you joined the Lányos Handmade Pattern Party Facebook group? We have many excellent sewists there who could provide many options for you!

      Thank you for your support! I'm going to finish loading up this one and then start on the Primrose videos. You might have heard ... my laptop and internet service are NOT my friends. I have to be "gentle" when uploading! ;) What materials are you planning to use for your Primrose?

      Sorry! Which corner? The one at the end of the zipper? Or the two on the sides away from the zipper?
