Jim Snell - USA - OVERHAUL, GASGAS TRIALS WATER-PUMP, OLD ENGINE
revised 19 May 2021 ~ A video by Jim Snell, for 25 years, formerly a spokesman for the GasGas motorcycle company. ~ Aware that few people on Earth possess the detailed knowledge of the older GasGas Trials machines, Jim has chosen to share some of his videos that cover the mechanical aspects of these older machines built prior to 2003. In this video, Jim shows you how to change the water-pump seal and update your older machine. Applicable to all Trial and Pampera models 2003 and earlier. (Not the Pro model)

    I bought my 2000 TXT280 in 2007 and it had been abused. I just now bought a new set of tires for it and to my horror I found a tube in the rear and a bunch of black RTV and clear silicone slathered under the rim band, in an obvious attempt by a PO to seal the rim before they gave up and used a tube. I cleaned it up as best I could and found some corrosion on the rim, a new rim band did not seal. I ended up taking tire slime and slathering it under the new rim band and that seemed to do the trick.

    Just did the this seal change on my 2012 txt 280 pro after draining emulsified oil out of engine. This video was excellent viewing beforehand. Did it with pump still attached to coolant pipes - bit of a fiddle but avoids breaking the original factory pipe clips.

    just an question, if i untherstand it right does AC comes in the thermostat, and then rectified, and not DC in and directly to the fan ? so do the lights need an extra rectifier ?

    • @TRIALSPARTSUSA
      @TRIALSPARTSUSA Před 2 lety

      Lights are A/C, fan is D/C. It doesn't matter if t/stat is on A/C before rectifier or after rectifier, it just turns the fan off and on

    Thanks for this video - super helpful. tbh if i hadn't chanced across this video I probably would have been stuck and wouldn't have thought of doing this. As it turns out, even with the washer (or in my case large nut) welded to the bearing, and even with a big slide hammer it wasn't coming out, but then I realised that having welded the nut across meant i could just flip the wheel over and knock the bearing out from behind with a drift (hitting against the welded nut/washer).. which worked right away! So I guess if you don't have a slide hammer handy or your bearing is super stuck like mine was that could be an alternate approach, (building on Jim's initial idea). Hope it helps someone... Thanks again for all the videos Jim :)

    Excellent and informative video. Very well presented. I recently bought a vintage Montesa that has had an ongoing and stubborn idle issue. Your video helped me understand the circuits and I realized it was missing an O ring. I also did not know that the mixture screw controls fuel vs. air. I also discovered that the float level had been set incorrectly, by placing the carb upside down while measuring the dimension, when it should be placed on its end. This makes a big difference as when its upside down the weight of the floats compresses the spring on the fuel inlet valve and puts the fuel level about 3/16" lower than it should be. Now running perfectly. Thank you for making the effort to record this helpful video.

    Whats the difference in the Trials and Pampera engine ?

    • @TRIALSPARTSUSA
      @TRIALSPARTSUSA Před 3 lety

      In the Pampera engine, 3rd and 4th gear are slightly different ratios. This makes the six-speed Pampera gear ratios more evenly spaced. The Trials engine has the first four gears very close together and 5th and 6th are stepped higher for higher-speed trails. Other than this, the Pampera engine is exactly the same as the trials engine.

    Hi great videos always watch your channel before starting work on mine, just a quick question, what would cause galloping type revs as the bike returns to idle from revving fully in neutral. The bikes a 1996 jtr, it does not do it all the time eather, it will sometimes idle normally but then sound like the timeing has changed as if its changed settings automatically its weard the bike pulls fine..

    • @TRIALSPARTSUSA
      @TRIALSPARTSUSA Před 3 lety

      seems you have an air leak. (the symptoms are typical of a lean condition) and it is odd that it is not consistent. Could be left side crank seal. could be intake manifold in front of carburetor, could be jetting issue or even a partially obstructed pilot jet.
