First look at the 2400 I’ve recently purchased, for clarity I dropped the oil and changed it pre starting, it was initially just to check the engine turned over and well 15 years of standing and she fired straight up, no easy start or bleeding nothing, just started!

In this series of videos we will be completely stripping this SD1, she was used as a donor car by the previous owner, upon inspection this car is actually in very good shape with the shell requiring very little welding. Due to the fact that she is in such a state we have decided to put the legendary Toyota 2JZ in this one. This will be a very lengthy project and videos will be uploaded sporadic...

That is a proverbial set of hen's gnashers!
Seem to recall that the 2.4 is a VM engine, not sure though.
Some 2 1/2 years ago I was held at the train crossing when the revs increased by about 300rpm, stayed there for a minute or two then returned to normal. This progressed to jumping 300rpm whilst driving at a steady speed up to a position where it was almost undrivable. The worst case occurred one day I had driven 20 miles when the revs jumped to 3000rpm with only the slightest pressure on the accelerator but the car had no power. After a couple of miles, the revs returned to normal and I was able to drive home with no further problems. I changed the MAP, EGR, and Throttle Position Sensors, plus I borrowed an ECU to eliminate that but without success, (although these new sensors did improve the normal running slightly.) Then unrelated, the water pump broke and I had to be recovered. On explaining this running problem to the recovery man he said 'It's your turbo they stick' So whilst I had the front of the car out to replace the water pump I also refurbished the turbo but this did not completely resolve the condition so I then replaced the MAF sensor with a recovered part and the car worked fine for over a year. Recently the problem returned. I had expected the recovered MAF to fail I fitted a new MAF sensor which has not done anything for me. Oil levels are good on both the engine and gearbox and the fuel pump is delivering fuel.
I had this problem but it was actually the gearbox. Don't know if you've examined this yet but that was my issue.
Super cool video, I'm just getting back into these sd1's after loving growing up with my dad's 3500se in moonraker blue, I always wanted it but he sold it after the torque converter lost oil to a guy who had just restored his sd1 for it only to be written off on its way home from a mot! Not sure if he rebuilt his car or my dad's. Anyways I live in London and seeing as owning something 40 years old is good I want to get a sd1 next year as my next daily, something safe and drivable but needs tidying up so I can love it and show it off at shows. Its name will be big joff after my dads nick name, i lost him 6 years ago, he was only 59 and cars were our bonding so big joff will be to remember him, I do eventually want to build a ls powered sd1 restomod car with modern ecu and brakes etc as a real nice fast cruiser. Il be waiting for more content, thank you
Glad I found your channel I do absolutely love an SD1 I hope some day I get the chance to own one currently have a 75. In my experience with Rover V8 they are quite rubust we had 4.6 p38 in family for 20 years and its got over 200k miles it did need headgaskets once but that due to a dead fan viscus coupling. Also I do agree that EFi V8s are vastly superior albeit I may not have sampled the best carbed ones one being in a disco 1 and the other a defender but in terms of smoothness and responsiveness I found the EFi ones to be lesgues ahead .
Had one that dropped the inlet valve in no3 cylinder. Blooming nightmare and could not get a No3 cylinder head anywhere. Had to scrap it in the end. Took the back wing and quarter panel off to put on a Y reg sd1 2.3.

We had both 2600 and 3500 vdp carb engine and I'd have to say that the 3.5 was definitely quicker and more reliable 2600.. That car was problematic as hell and the timing chain eventually snapped
Hi. Have U ever worked on the South African SDX rover that had the Austin Princess engine in. A 2.2 Liter that have been uprated to 2.6 Liter that was the standard South African model. The Landover R6 also came out with that engine and was mated to Santana 4 Speed box
James wade has a mint blue diesel sd1......
Is that the nitrosilva channel you are on about .
I've got a E plate twin plenum Keep up the good work. 👍
Not E887/E877? A really really rotten TP?
Had a jeep Cherokee with the 2.5 VM diesel.one of the heads cracked due to overheating caused by an airlock.their is a bleedpipe off the top of the engine which had scaled up and got blocked. The jeep has tha adaptor plate on the back of the engine which carried the rear crankshaft oil seal. Had a bad oil leak on the rear of the engine so gearbox out only to find adaptor plate was cracked around oil seal area so this was welded and machined. Not the easiest of engines to work on.
Try a diesel fuel additive and fuel filter.
I’ll try that nearer the time she gets fired up, but what I’ll do when the heads are off is pull a piston and check the rings, looking at how clean the rockets are I can’t imagine the rings being particularly gunked up, could even be slight play in the turbo, but we’ll cross that bridge in the future
love the car graveyard and inspired channel name 😀
I often think to myself.. if these cars are sentient.. it must be horrific being in that shed surrounded by parts of other cars everywhere
@@thatroverguy1937cars must have feelings, why else would they break down? 😁
@@thatcheapguy525 😂 and you can really tell when they’re worn out too, and throw up constant reminders that they’re thirsty lol
Gud vid 😊
Thank you ☺️
@@thatroverguy1937 welcome, subbed. 😎👍
9:33 I’m much the same, love the torque and practicality of a diesel. Great channel excellent content well delivered by yourself 👍🏻
Thanks very much
I restored one of these around 20 years ago and mine had a choke. I think I met you a few months ago in our local b and m? I was in a silver 1996 Range Rover.
You most certainly did! Japanese import wasn’t it? You should call around sometime, be nice to have a cuppa and see each others cars
Another great update on the diesel SD1 loving your channel and looking forward to more videos on this car and your other daily V8 SD1, The SD1 is such an iconic car and take my hat off to the dedication and talent you have to these cars to carry out full restorations, These cars hold happy childhood memories to me with my Dad, I’ve started gathering the parts to convert mine to a V8 trying to find info on the how to’s and info on converting from a 2600 for loom mods etc isn’t easy so will enjoy studying the engine loom mods etc keep the videos coming love it 👍
Thanks I really appreciate that! I tell you what mate tomorrow evening I’ll be taking the Gems V8 out of my VDP EFi and I’ll run through the procedure of converting a 2600/2300/2000 into a V8, it’s not really complicated but I’ll cover it, as I wanna start doing videos that have more actual mechanics going on, and now I got 3 of my projects under one roof it’ll be easy to upload regularly now, I grew up with them too, it’s nice to meet other people as passionate as I am about them
@@thatroverguy1937 That will be great and a very interesting video to that will help me greatly to get an overview very much appreciated that your going todo that, these cars still get a lot attention and have a good following just great cars, Like you say growing up with these cars makes them even more interesting, really looking forward to your future videos on your channel 👍
Thx for the update .... its a great bit of content 👍👍👍
Thanks mate, I feel that now I’m in a position to pretty much start daily uploads of SD1 content, V8 diesel and 2J conversion, really appreciate the compliment mate thanks
I'm getting massive buffering issues. Currently, this video is almost impossible to play but when I click on any other vid in my yt feed I don't have that problem. All other random vids play fine. Just a heads up. Secretly downhearted at missing the removal of aluminium canker scene but bearing up well.
Update: its playing fine now. #crawls behind sofa in shame#
Bugger yeah you are right! I should’ve shown the blowing of the alloy debris being blown off, well in all fairness I filmed it but it’s got the compressor blowing loud, and then it has me struggling to undo the retainers for the rocker covers, thanks a lot for the feedback mate much appreciated
Sorry very poor audio, struggle to hear what U are saying
Get the tyres on it and get the engine warm then start it in gear and try the clutch a few times, try this a few times it should free up.
Hello , I have same car. EGR and Map sensor hoses connection wrong , Map sensor hose must be connect to the Intake manifold your car connected to the EGR valve. This is the reason for the low power.
Absolute excellence! Yes I realised my mistake after I swapped removed the intake ironically after I had posted the video, 5 stars gold comment! There is more to this video than first glance
That is in remarkable condition!
P38's have a rep for being troublesome, but I guess if you're prepared to research and learn a bit to keep them in shape, they offer a good bargain. Are they steel or Ali bodied? I guess at 2.5T they're steel?.
Steel body on a P38, but they don’t rot like an L322, I’ve had numerous Range Rovers throughout the years, and I’ve always fell back to running a P38, they’re by some distance the best of the lot, the more modern ones are more comfy and obviously drive better, but they’re just so unreliable, and the classics are just awful only a mad man would daily a classic, the P38 is a good compromise all round
Haven't seen one of these for a good 25 years. Nice find. Hope to see this out n' about fully restored sometime in the future. Good luck 👍
If that choke knob is original, it explains the high spec, in an era when diesels usually were very basically equipped. It of course suggests it was originally a petrol SD1.
No, it is a one owner car, the choke is something to do with the cold start, in fact series 2 SD1’s (1980 onwards) have auto chokes on the petrols, so they don’t have a pull choke
New subscriber seems YT is pushing this one, good old 2.4D I vaguely recall from my landy days VM or York diesel? Can’t say I’ll watch all the vehicles but this looks right up my straza 👍
Look forward to seeing the progress with this one 👍🏻👍🏻
Hot Rod!
What's that flashing orange light at the start?
Engine oil level, does its check on start up
That’s right, 3 flashes and away you go
They were great cars. And still are!!
Had one of these for a few months in the early 90's. It wasn't good. Not a fault of the car itself but simply because it was bought from a dodgy bloke at an even dodgier auction and I should've known better. At least it was cheap
Thats not shabby at all .. easy resto . I have had a 3500 & 2600 .. until now I never knew there was a diesel. But back when I had mine it was just a cheap car out the free sheets I bought for the room to cart 3 kids & a dog about. I never looked for one... they kind of found me.
Looks like one that I recently picked up. Mine is a early v8. Good luck.
I didn't think the diesel was sold in the UK. Never remember seeing one Great vid 😂
I have a mk1 escort and a reliant kitten both need a decent motor
I’ve been looking for a kitten for a long time, rare cars nowadays, a V8 kitten would be tremendous
@@thatroverguy1937 it's a dl commercial van iv had it since 2005 was last on the road 2009 so as you can see I'm really cracking on with it I just cant let it go
@@T4.3quarters I’ve also got projects like that! For pfft 20 years there was a red one sat at the side of the road just outside of Shrewsbury, many a time I thought of calling it to buy it, by the time I could afford it and had space she was gone, they gotta be pretty rare now, you really don’t see them
@@thatroverguy1937 that's the way it goes I'm afraid iv not seen another kitten van with round headlight seen a few cars
@@T4.3quarters the one I knew too was a square headlight car, you know you’ve inspired me I’m gunna get one I think
Nice resto project, I also have a big diesel Rover, mine is the 825SD. I'd be very tempted to swap in the 3.1 5 cylinder VM engine
I’m actually looking for an 825 dieeel myself, rare cars by their own right now
Fantastic looking old gal. Black suits it really well, and the pinstripes look pretty cool. Such low kms too. I always find it amazing how big modern cars have got when next to an 80s car- that golf looks massive! None of the style of the SD1 either. I look forward to seeing how you go with the project- best wishes from Australia
Looks like lots of room for an ls swap
Great channel, I used to work on these in the 1980’s as a panel beater. Loved these also I wasn’t aware of a 2:4 diesel. 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The SD1 is one of my favourite British cars. When I think of the SD1, I inavaribly picture in my mind a late 1970s 3500 in Pendelican White or a Vitesse in Moonraker Blue :)
I’ll be honest, when I bought my first one I was a little undecided on her, I grew up with them and didn’t really appreciate them much, after the first drive I was hooked, now I couldn’t imagine a day without one lol
