    OK, I get the dual battery system idea... But WHAT if I wish to use 2 alternators for each system (start battery and an aux. deep cycle battery)? That seems to me the best idea as then I won't have to worry at all about killing off any of of other devices I wish to use. How then is the best and proper way to set all this up? I no longer have the old Air Con in my van as it died and I really did not want to use it anyway seeing as I plan to mostly be off-road most of the time at slower speeds. I know it "CAN" be done but frankly I just need to learn just how set it up. I wanted to ONLY use the Starter Batter for 2 things: Start the car and use the Head Lamps... PERIOD. I wanted to use EVERYTHING ELSE for the radio/Amp set up, Short Wave Radio, the Off-Road Lights on top of the Van etc.. If I can just get one CLEAR AND UNDERSTANDABLE set of instructions I'll be off to the races as they say. PLEASE HELP!!! :)

    Out of curiosity, in the last scenario, what purpose does the starter battery have? Could you then change it to another deep cycle? Would you want to have a start option also for cold winters? Starting a diesel in the cold on deep cycle might not be ideal.

    As a comparison I just look at the basic math. Lithium cost 4-5x more than FLA but do they last 4-5x longer? The answer is NO (not even close) so I will continue to buy FLA until the price of Lithium is comparable.

    Thanks for the concise information! Im making a decision to live in my SUV in southern California, a few hours north of Los Angeles. I absolutely need an alternative power-bank and the proper means to charge it. Versatility and adaptability will likely serve me best, but cost is what will hold me back. And this “project” is not something I have been able to prepare for- it sounds better that I made a choice instead of not having any other reasonable options for permanent living space, like a bedroom in a house. It’s so expensive, and I’m on fixed income and I can’t stand the idea of living check to check and becoming whatever that makes someone turn into. Summer is here, in the high desert, and temps are regularly 100 to 110 de degrees Fahrenheit. I must get a power system in my vehicle with an external (ideally 12V DC powered) air conditioner of some type. Im a military veteran so I understand that diesel vehicles are designed for continuous operation. Ive always heard that unleaded gasoline vehicles “don’t like” running for hours on end without actually driving/traveling. And gas would be very costly to do that. I hope i dont melt in the desert before i can put something really good and reliable together. I hope that this period will only last 2-5 years maximum. So whatever I get, i need it to last me 5 years to be safe. Im totally open to input and suggestions to consider before i start to purchase any of this equipment. Thanks

      Thanks for sharing! If I would be in your shoes/flipflops, I would probably start off with mounting as much PV on my roof as reasonably possible, have a heavy duty alternator/portable generator as backup during overcast, and match your energy storage AND consumption to this setup. Good luck! Jesse

    Thanks for all of the info? It sounds like the 3rd option is what I would do. However, I have heard of people having a second alternator. If/when that is the case would each alternator simply charge their own system (starter battery or deep cycle/home batteries)? If/when that is the case, would I need these other components? Or perhaps just one on the house cycle to make sure it gets the correct voltage and flow?

      Thanks for your message and feedback Johannes. I see your point, but I have a different perspective: It is not per kwh, but per hour. Therefore, perhaps it would have been more accurate to use the term G/kW/h, or L/kW/h. Thanks for your feedback, I welcome it! Jesse

    So what if you mount bi-facial panels on a tin roof, say 12"from the roof. Then use the reflective paint on the roof. The same stuff used on the highway to make white lines! Shouldn't this reflect nearly 90% of the light? Possibly close to 98%much more than a traditional roof anyway, i think the paint is traditional paint, thr reflective part come from basically powdered glass applied over the paint, so on a roof, a white or silver roof sealer can be used then use the reflective powder. This should make a noticable difference in the temperature under the roof also. Depending on what it started with for roofing.. my house, half the roof is south facing, so I'm putting panels on the roof and the south wall, as well as on the fence, im going anout 12' tall and 30'+/- long in two places with panels starting about 16" from the ground. Hoping to get about 30kw of solar all together and use excess solarpower to lift heavy weights into a few tall trees. To generate power on the way back down, getting a 2-3klbs weight 25-30 feet up a tree on a guide cable. That will return to earth at a rate of 12" per minute roughly 7"-15" per minute, with a fence around the danger area, in the event of no power, they can be hand cranked up taking about a hour to two hours each, using a hand crank winch, power can be returned as soon as the weight is to the top. Having 4-6 of these if they generate 4,kwh each. Take 30-40 minutes to return to earth, this is 2kwh, each. Maybe more weight can be added, maybe use two weights per tree with a single generator, a 100:1 overdrive coupled to an additional overdrive. Connected to a 3phase pmg , converting 2 rpm to possibly 2000, the weight dropping 6"-7", minimum for up to 40', then raise the weight to 6000 lbs, and slow the decent to 7"-8" max per minute, the output should be 6kw+ for 55-90minutes producing roughly 10 kwh per tree, as far as financial viable, around 1.5-3 kwh is likely, and can be manually reset in 30 minutes. Getting 1500 watts for a hourwould be awesome. I don't think the math works out. But i hope to get something going possibly using a Nissan leaf motor as a generator, or something similar. Maybe a scratch made generator. Using large n52 magnets!

      @SolarSolution Před 18 dny

      Very interesting ideas James, thanks for sharing! I agree with the general idea of using bifacial's and creating highly reflective roofing surface. I also like the idea of storing your excess electrical energy in potential energy [ie.e. weights in trees]. Which benefits do you recon the latter has over storing your excess electrical energy in batteries?

    Whoever is watching in 2024, there are now 100AH 12V lithium batteries selling for as low as $300, which would put the cost at closer to $0.08/kWh. In addition, what is also important to remember is that the battery (LiFePO4) doesn't become "dead" after 4000 cycles. The cycle count is to indicate how many cycles before the battery degrades to 80% capacity. So the true cost of kWh is actually even lower.

    @awa2827 19 hours ago Hi thank you for your helpful videos. I have a question about my solar system. I had 12v solar system with 10-180 watts panels and 2 lead acid batteries 12v/200amp connected parallel. I have them about 5 years and last month I bought 2 lithium batteries 230 amp each. When I connected new batteries, my inverter would turn on and off automatically every few minutes when there is less or no load connected to the system. I have 5000 watts Giandel inverter. I thought my inverter had a problem so I bought another inverter. This time I bought a 24v 5000 watt inverter and switched my solar panels to series. And I still have the same problem. I searched online but could not find any helpful information. Will you please help me out with this issue? Thank you so much.

    Is it feasible to incorporate an external rectifier into an MPPT charger to increase the charging voltage to 48V, especially when utilizing an inverter? By adjusting the field voltage supplied to the alternator to generate approximately 36V 3phase AC, subsequent rectification yields a voltage close to the minimum requirement for the MPPT charger. This setup has the potential to optimize efficiency for 230V devices while also potentially reducing the necessary cable cross-section.

    Can you do the same calculations with a (IFLA) forklift battery?.... it is probably half the price of regular FLA... capacity is given at C/6, not C/20...capacity @ C/6 x 1.57 = capacity at C/20.. and discharge at 80%, can last 20 years,

    So I do have an auxiliary battery in my van, where should I connect my inverter/charger? From the main battery or from the auxiliary battery? Thank you

    I wanted to ask; is the vapor, or air around a battery bank really that bad? People think it is, but if its well ventilated I wonder if that's true still? And is the idea of the air around a battery bank not being good actual fact or just a myth?

    • @SolarSolution
      @SolarSolution Před měsícem

      An excellent question Noah, thanks! It is not myth, it is definitely true. That being sad, appropriate ventilation substantially mitigates the negative effects and/or risks.

    is the boost voltage the same thing as Absorption Voltage. Am a little confused as my batteries says 13.8V as Boost Voltage but nothing about Absorption Voltage

    • @SolarSolution

      An excellent question, thanks! Different terms for similar things definitely doesn't help to understand these topics better, I agree. Boost is used interchangeably with Bulk. Boost is definitely not the same as absorption. Good luck! Jesse

    Very insightful. Thanks. However, if the inverter component on an inverter generator goes bad. Can the be used directly as a conventional generator? Similar to turbo engines. If the turbo goes bad, the engine can still run without the turbo but on lower output. Please help clarify. Thanks

      Good question, thanks! Most inverter generators won't work anymore once the inverter-component is faulty.

    Running an inverter generator to charge solar batteries should be the best choice. The most common reason battery chargers/ power inverters fail is dirty generators. At 1st, I used my genny to run A/C directly and it was hard on it stepping up and down. I then connected it to charge the battery directly and it runs more efficiently and steady. The genny is more gas efficient at full load. I actually have 2 super quiet inverter generators. One is 3700 and the small one is 1700 running watts. The smaller one is more gas efficient per watt produced, but only runs 3-1/2 hours at full load. The larger one can run all night long at full output, but is much less efficient in terms of Kilowatts produced.

    I find your videos useful in confirming much of what I myself have learned over 20 years of off grid living (solar with lead acid submarine type batteries). One perhaps negative point I feel I should mention is that very occasionally you are incorrect or inprecise in what you say. You have said that at specific times batteries create 'air' bubbles, did you mean hydrogen (& oxygen, effectively HHO)? The difference and potential omition of this explosive hazard is worrying. Also, you have mentioned topping up your batteries with 'water'. Again not specific enough and potentially damaging for the batteries themselves if your viewer doesn't appreciate that you mean to say 'distilled water', definitely NOT ordinary tap water. I hope: 1.) I'm not wrong 'cos I'd hate to look stupid when I'm only trying to be helpful & 2.) you actually find my feedback useful.

      Hi Graham! Thank you for your sincere and helpfull feedback. I'm glad to hear you appreciate the videos I have been sharing. And yes, you are of course absolutely correct on both accounts [hydrogen, oxygen, destilled water, RE #1], so thank you for that correction [RE #2]. Thanks for taking the time to write to me! Take care, Jesse.
