I have also made wraps with mustard greens love them!
Oh that is actually a great idea. I will try them as a wrap. They are so large and would be great for that. Thank you for the idea!
I have another question...I am growing mammoth sunflowers for the first time. They are just beautiful but I am worries if we get a tropical storm or hurricane how do you protect your sunflowers?
I love mammoth sunflowers as well and yes, they are delightful to just sit and stare at. I have learned to seed save on those if I can get to them before the squirrels eat them. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do for them in a storm. Pray for the best during those times of the year and enjoy them while we have them. I have been growing the Yellow Mexican Sunflowers as they are a bushier variety of beauty and they seem to do a little better as far as standing up to storms, grow year-round, and also withstand the droughts. The mammoth sunflowers are just so tall that the wind and rain either knocks them down or they uproot. I am pretty sure Etsy has the Yellow Mexican Sunflower plants and you want to grow them from a cutting if you decide to grow the ones I have. They are just for beauty though and they can get out of control, so they do require you to maintain them. They do make for great chop and drop.
I notice you are covering your plants do you find this helps in our hot humid weather? We have not had rain here in ages in Winter Haven fl.
Yes, I invest a lot in natural mulch products for covering the soil and supporting consistent moister (compost) is important here in Florida. I tried Chip Drop for almost a year but no one every dropped off any mulch and I even offered to pay so I do not recommend that route. We are definitely in need of some rain. Our grass and beds are getting dry and our lake is very low right now. As growers we try and focus on creating soil which supports a positive microbial mix for our plant to survive. I like to reflect on nature and where we see trees and plants growing naturally. What does nature do? Mulch itself with fallen limbs, leaves, mushrooms and other plant/animal matter. If you can get your hands on or do it yourself, aerated compost tea also helps in the dry months, well anytime actually but our dry months are a real struggle for our beautiful plants. You can also use kitchen scrapes to give back to the garden. I have a video out on composting. If you have not watched it, you might be interested in that video. Great question. Thank you for being a part of my channel.
Oh wow so mezmerizing! Just beautiful! Kristen I have a question. I have been trying for two years to grow chammoile in a vertical tower with no luck. Can you give me any advise on growing this herb?
Yes, absolutely. I have and still honestly struggle with chamomile. I personally find it grows best in partial shade receiving morning sun, not the super-hot afternoon sun as you know we can get here in Florida. When planting water immediately and for a vertical tower continue to water every two to three days until you see it sprout (consistent moister is important for these seeds), then water about every four days until it gets nice and lush. Keep in mind that they love a well-drained compost mix. I like to use black cow and composted leaves (it helps to retain consistent moister). I have struggled with my Greenstalk but have found that a grow light set up works best for me when trying to grow some things or using a shade cloth in the summer or maybe a screened in porch with UV protection. Trying growing it in a food grade bucket (wider area for growing which mimics the forest environment and allows for the roots to extend deeper in the soil) vs. the Greenstalk type setup and see if the larger space works better. I find plants do best when we mimic their natural setting. Also, I usually grow chamomile in the fall, winter, and very early spring. This process also works well for mountain mint (mint family herbs) for me if I am growing outside. We just get so hot and humid here during our summer months. Thank you for this great question. You are a blessing to my channel.
It seems like you are planting a lot of different seeds in a small area. How can they all grow in a small space?
Great question. Yes, I like to do a mixture of different seeds/plants in a small space as I find the diversity of vegetation is an obstacle for pests. If you feel like the bed is overcrowded, then you can always consider transplanting some of the plants into other beds that are open or simply thin the overcrowded beds. You never know what will and how many plants/seeds will germinate so I do over plant. I try to leave open spaces in other beds to move plants around if they have high germination rates. Sometimes seeds packaging will provide a germination count which might help you better plan how many seeds you would like to use in one area. I hope this information is helpful. If you still have questions, please feel free to reach back out to me. I am enjoying this community and helping people find a love for growing.
I am in Central fl zone 9b , new 10a . I have two Tropic Beauty and Tropic Sweet which I bought last Summer , that has fruits as we speak. Please dont bother planting the seeds , you can get them at the nurseries . Seeds may not get the exact fruit as the mother plant .
Thank you for sharing. I will keep an eye out for a peach tree.

Thank you for your love and care of our fur babies and providing us with a wonderful and safe product.
Thanks for the pest management video. I have heard of both of these companies but haven't tried them yet. We live in middle GA, zone 8, so I can't grow Lemongrass except in pots. We are in the country and always have lots of ticks since loosing our chickens. I have 2 dogs and 4 cats, all rescues, and they are in and out of the house all day, sometimes bringing in little hitchhikers. Mosquitoes are always bad and they love me. Think I'll try the Mosquito Barrier, we love garlic!
Thank you for rescuing! I just saw a guy on the side of the road selling french bull dogs out of the back of his SUV. I was so upset. It just broke my heart when there are so many babies that need our love in the animal shelters. Yes I have used the Mosquito Barrier for almost 15 years now and it really does work in my area. Lemongrass can be hit or miss in its ability to grow in some areas. Wishing you the best in keeping these pests under control. Thank you for sharing and rescuing. Blessings to you and your fur babies.
