Vetus M3.09 Installation and Commissioning
I first purchased this diesel with a 1977 Albin 25 deLuxe pocket trawler on a Fast Load aluminum trailer as a package. “Some assembly required”, as they say.
My previous video of the Vetus was my first test run to see if it did indeed run ok and was suitable for installation. It passed the test with flying colors. It only needed a water temp sensor replaced.
That was 6 years ago. Since then I rebuilt the engine beds, installed and rigged the Vetus and refurbished or replaced much of the woodwork on the boat.
A few minor hiccups starting the engine again after 6 years in hibernation but after an hour or so it now runs like a top.
No audio in the beginning of the video though, but do not adjust your volume. Spoiler alert: the installed, rigged and running mighty Vetus makes an appearance towards the end, complete in all its diesel glory (ear protection advised).

This is the test run of the Volvo Penta 432A engine in my 1993 Rosborough RF-246 Sedan Cruiser. The engine and boat had been in covered storage for 17 years prior to my purchasing. Test run of a used Vetus M3.09 marine diesel with 550 hours. 25 hp at 3,600 rpm. 2.0:1 ZF Hurth reverse gear. Found a few problems but nothing major. Wanted to make sure it ran OK before it gets installed.

This is the original engine in my 1975 24' Penn Yan tunnel drive cabin cruiser. The engine was rebuilt 150 hours ago at the time of this video. The engine was drawing cooling water out of a 5 gallon bucket using its own pumps. The garden hose feeding the water refilled the bucket as the engine drew the water from it.

I’ve heard that marine starters are hard to come by for this diesel. No current starter that could be rebuilt? (I had mine rebuilt). If not, one source I would contact is American Diesel, in the Carolinas, I believe. They might have or might know someone. Hope this helps.

Great!..I am buying a '71 without engine. As Dave in AZ points out this is plenty of power. I love the MD-3B, but they are heavy and loud, and parts are expensive. Getting the gear ratio and prop pitch right so it runs in it's sweet spot for economy (and noise) is important. I like the idea of a physically smaller and lighter engine for servicing and trailering. Although that weight was pary of the ballast calcs.
Rough idle.. check for dribbling injector, or low comp in one cyl.. probably injector easy peasy...I'd like to have this in an Albin 25 for sure !

Im trying to cross reference the oil filter for a 1984 Albin 27 and I'm not 100% sure which of the several Peugeot 504 filters is correct. Do you know what filter is correct for a 4d61?

For injector lines, I would see what is available in Europe because the Lehman is simply a marinized version of the engine from a 1976 Peugeot 504 sedan with the 2112 cc diesel engine. The Peugeot is/was much more popular in Europe than in the USA. I think they even used them as taxi cabs. Or... maybe a specialist in fuel injection can make new ones? I've never had to go that route.
I am looking for inyección lines for the Lehman engine of my boat Laffitte 44. . Parts number P17040 to P17043 The engine is 4D 51 or 4D 61. Can someone provide information where to get this parts? I am writing from South America Thanks
I am just rebuilding one of these. I have been told its a Mitsubishi L3E. Can anyone confirm that?

Not sure of the reliability of the engine yet. This video shows the entire first run of my ownership. I wanted to be sure it was OK before I installed it in my boat. I can say that it has a little over 500 hours on the clock from when it was in a sailboat. The only flaw I've found so far is the Hurth gear needs a partial rebuild due to the oil leak and the end play on the output shaft seems excessive according to the trans shop. It runs like a top though!

Sorry everyone, but the Lehman is no longer for sale. I've since sold the boat and at last report the Lehman is still running strong!
The new exhaust elbow in the video was purchased from American Diesel. My boat came with a nice supply of spare hoses so I was OK there. The engine is in my 1984 Albin 27. I get a lot of part source info from the Yahoo Albin Cruisers Group and Albin Owners Group forums. Many parts cross-reference to the 1976 Peugeot 504 sedan with the 2112 cc diesel engine. Glow plugs are even available from NAPA auto parts.

Agreed! She's not a race horse but runs like a clock for hours at a time. I also won't be using my current prop and shaft and I'll make a great deal on them if you want them too. Then you'll have the complete package! I should know about the sale soon. Thanks for the interest!

Richard - I've updated the description with my contact info and exactly what is for sale (basically, everything!). I'm repowering with a larger motor that will better suit my boat. My Albin has a semi-displacement hull that could benefit from a larger motor (later years had up to 157 hp engines installed).

Located in Southold, NY. Looks like the new engine is going to take a while. I'm looking at the end of January 2013 now. It won't be for sale 'til then. I'll post updates as I can. Still interested?

Hi Richard - To answer your question: It will be for sale very soon. I wanted to document the engine running before I put it to bed for the winter. I have a new engine on order and if all works out OK then the Lehman and Hurth gear will be for sale. It runs great and pushes my Albin 27 at 6.5 knots cruise and 8.5 knots max. Hopefully I'll know within the week. Stay tuned!
