Spring Ski 2024 - Team Accelerati
End of April at Sugarbush and Killington, VT. Great weather both days. 75 degrees at the base at Killington! Yes, there is an overabundance of me skiing the bumps, and a lot of Jens, as well. But I had the only camera, and Jens and I skied all the same runs. The video is chronological, so you can see Jens and I getting sloppy at the end as we get totally tuckered out! Overall, a fantastic weekend with great friends, food and drink!

I got a new GoPro 11, and I hadn't used my wing-mount in a very long time, so that's what this is. I was curious to see what the hammerheads looked like from this view point. There was a nice thin cloud layer that was fun to fly around. Probably looked better in person than in the video. A cold camera battery cut off the touchdown at landing (really, it wasn't a poor landing!). "Thingamajig" by...

Lighting was not optimal, but flight conditions were awesome! Many of the maneuvers were strung together, but because diving is required to gain airspeed for maneuvers, I edited out the time I spent climbing back to altitude. All maneuvers are done between 3,500' and 5,000'. In competition, loops need to be started from level flight, even if having to dive for airspeed, so for a couple of the l...

N59YK Trip To OH

It was time to take Waiex N59YK to its new home in Ohio. This is the flight down to drop it off. The aircraft is homebuilt from a kit (by Sonex Aircraft), built by Max Emmighausen in New Hampshire. It's all aluminum, with a 110 HP Viking engine (based on a Honda Fit), turning a 3-bladed Warp Drive composite propeller. The Dynon Skyview avionics has a moving map, 2-axis autopilot and full engine...
Talking Thru Flight in Waiex 59YK

More flight testing. We changed the flight displays to KTS instead of MPH, so this was the first flight to correlate the flight regimes to knots. I also got up to 10,000' for the first time so we could verify the ADSB worked (up here in NH, the nearest ADSB ground antennas are MILES away on the other side of the mountains). The ADSB did work, and we confirmed it with a report from the FAA.
Great little airport, I'll have to check it out one day.
Ditch the “music.”
Trash the flipping music will ya ? I wanna listen to airplane noise not to supposedly "cool" jazz.
Nope. There are no airplane sounds to be heard. The camera audio is plugged into the radio. So without the music there is just silence. Get a life and stop being a CZcams twit.
respect !
Thank you sir, that was very interesting. You're what experimental is all about. Making it yours.
Oh to have OEM knees😊
Aren't intentional spins prohibited?
No. It's an experimental home built aircraft, and so nothing is prohibited except by common sense. But it's an aerobatic aircraft, stressed for +6/-3 Gs. Spins are part of what it was designed to do. It recovers very quickly with standard spin recovery techniques.
@@mikesmith208I didn’t know that. I was reading the Sonex POH last week, and thought it said intentional spins were prohibited.
Boy I miss skiing in general and spring bumps in particular. Spent a lot of really late season on Outer Limits. Too flat out here!
Enjoyed the video very much .
Great video, where do you live? Youd be handy for a pre purchase inspection on a used one I reckon.
I'm in Massachusetts.
Is the non painted parts covered in lacquer? I mean the polished surface
No. 6061-T6 aluminum is about the most anti-corrosive aluminum alloy there is. It's just polished. I re-polish every 2-3 years, and it had been on a tie-down for 6 years (in a hangar now). Lacquer would not work, and would haze, crack and chip. It would look awful. Check out any polished aircraft and you'll find the same thing as mine.
@@mikesmith208 sweet! Was just curious, can see the care you put into it with that shine you got going on 🫡
That looks like an amazing show, but I would not want to fly there. I can’t believe there are not more accidents with so much traffic in such a small area. Maybe I’ll drive up some time. Good save on that landing that looked crazy.
thank you
What happened to this airplane? Is it still around?
Great video! I knew Joe G from when he used to teach at MMK. He bought the PA12 that I learned to fly in.
constant music kills the video, raw noise much better
That kind-of-landing looked really, really tough! Congratulations on keeping the shiny side up!! Sounds like ATC was a real 🐻 !!
incredible build, very inspiring, this is my goal one day!
How well does the plane climb with passengers? At 1100 lbs, can it even climb?
It's an 80hp engine, so you have to know what it can and can't do or you'll end up pretty unhappy. In cold weather, at 1100 lbs, I can climb out at 1,000 fpm, and it performs quite well. On a hot summer day, at gross weight, I may only see 300 fpm on takeoff, which is not very comfortable if there are any obstructions ahead, like tall trees. So I don't often fly at gross weight on hot days. When I travel out to OSH at gross weight, I leave in the morning when it's cool, and choose fuel stops with longer runways and fewer obstructions. By the time I get to Ohio that's usually not a problem.
@@mikesmith208 Good info, thanks!
Excellent. Thanks!
That is such inspiration to get my sonex done !!!! Nice flying, and thanks for posting videos
6:00 called an RV :) and when flying an RV12 I was called a Cirrus. Now I'm flying a high-wing and get called a Cessna. Sigh, RV and Cirrus were better. 7:40 lot of crosswind! 19:40 what was the wheel bearing problem? I assumed it was the cable brakes.
I have hydraulic brakes, so no cable. There is a thin washer between the outside nut and the face of the outside of the bearing. The side load cupped the washer so it would grab sometimes. Replacing the washer fixed the problem.
A pucker moment on landing! I've been vacillating a while about building a Waiex B
At 151, Race Pi belongs to a couple of my good friends.
'Twas a super fun trip. Thanks for being such a great "host" for our first trip to AirVenture!
You're a great ambassador for both aviation and 6B6, Michael! Every time I hear the "buzzing" of aerobatics overhead I know EXACTLY who's up there and it does my spirit good! Thanks for sharing and I'll watch this several times. God speed!
wow,epic view-🤞
What program did you use to diagram your electrical system layout?
Do you have the big or small ailerons?
The standard size ailerons (not the aerobatic ailerons).
@@mikesmith208 Oh good. I plan on trying some acro and the one I'm building has the short ailerons also. Very nice flying there sir!
@@emotodude Some of the discussion on sonexbuilders gives kudos to the acrobatic ailerons at slow speeds - they have more authority there. I think I also remember somebody saying the acro ailerons have higher stick forces at full deflection. But as Mike and others have shown the original ailerons are just fine. I'm happy with my acro ailerons and my flaps give me plenty of drag for landing.
Looks like lots of fun, very envious. Thanks for sharing.
Very good video and nice build. I'm interested in the rudder control rod, Can you give me info on what material it is. Did you form it on a lathe?
Obviously still loving the aeroplane! Great to see it being used to its full potential!
Building an RV-7, now! Empenage done, wings on the way! I plan to be fuel injected, and put in inverted fuel and oil. Hope you're doing well! When are you coming out to Airventure again? Or if you'll be in the Boston, MA area, you've got a place to stay!
Thanks. What size metal is that?
I think it was .025"
Thanks, seeing this gave me a confidence boost to build one!
Amazing.....ive never heard of anyone moving to ohio....only moving out😆😀😂🤣😉🤣😂😀😆
This was great! Your commentaries are wonderful as you go through every move calling out air speed and height and yoke movement. I love the Sonex!
Awesome video.....livin the dream....keep up the good work....tomk fdny✌
Check your rudder pull. czcams.com/video/D_Q8iVHhK_s/video.html
I spun my KR2 regularly . The first time scared me as it snapped into a spin when I applied cruise power while recovering from a mush, while practicing stalls . The airplane would just go into a mush , fully controllable . No break or wing drop . It spun really fast either way and recovered fast. One hell of an airplane but very sensitive in pitch . It would fly in ground effect at 40 mph at full gross . As a tail wheel you had to hold the tail up until below 40. Still it was quick on the controls.
Lose the music
Looks like you really paid attention to detail and put a lot of thought in to improving upon the original design. Isn’t that what whole building is all about!?! I love that the magnetos are Briggs & Stratton magnetos from the Oregon outdoor power equipment.
Stupid?
You can't build a car but a plane is not a problem. Plastic engine cowling? If you are cold just wear motorcycle gear. Why not sit in the middle of the plane. The propeller is the most important part of a plane.
Especially not a 100mpg car.
Thank you for taking the time to create this awesome informative video. As a new kit builder this information offers so much food for thought. If you ever make a video on the performance and flying of the plane I would love to watch that too. Happy landings
I have a whole lot of Sonex videos up if you do a search for my name and Sonex.
Is there any benefit to the Y tail configuration compared to the standard tail? Just a personal choice?
Just personal choice, 'cause it looks cool! It flies the same as the straight tail, even in aerobatics.
GREAT video, your work and effort is greatly appreciated. Excellent job!!!
I built jet engines for 16 years and work many aircraft while in the Air Force. I loved watching your video and learned tons.
Glad to hear it. That was always my hope for the video.
Good knowledge for all
Good video! Hooked up my brake lines this morning. Need to get some of the special fluid now.
That first one to the right looked to be a spiral. It never quit flying. Now the second one was a spin, as you could tell when the left wing let go.
Your improvements are stunning. Unbelievable
