In the depths of the ice age in Europe, at the end of the Upper Paleolithic, the Gravettian saw incredible societies of mammoth hunters thriving across Europe.
They lived in caves, rock shelters, and open-air settlements in mammoth bone houses and developed surprisingly complex and sophisticated societies. Their burials at sites like Dolní Věstonice and Sungir could include grave goods like ivory beads in enormous quantities, suggesting the emergence of social inequality.
They were the first people in the world to use ceramics, making small figurines of animals and people. They also made the world-famous Venus figurines in stone, ivory, and moulded from clay. So who were these people? Where did they come from? Where and how did they live? How could they create so much art in the depths of the ice age? And what ultimately happened to them?
This is the awe-inspiring story of the lords of the mammoth steppe; the Gravettians.

    Our ancestors. No they weren't brown eyed, brown skinned, and brunette. I've noticed that most of the hypothetically reconstructed "gravettians" are portrayed this way in this video. Some of them look downright eurasian, or american indian. Didn't see any with golden hair, red hair, blue eyes, or green eyes in the sorry lot. You know, European traits? This video takes place in Europe, not the middle east or india. Highly inaccurate depiction. Just like the thoroughly debunked "chedder man." No wonder western Europe is in immanent danger of genocide.

    Its the year 40.000 AD. Nobody knows what AD means anymore, but thats besides the point. The interstellar human civilization has just rediscovered earth, finally putting an end to the multiple origins hypothesis. The archeologists, digging through miles of rubble, keep discovering the fossilized remains of small figurines, apparently made from a kind of carbon composite. They unmistakenly represent humans, but highly stylized, with abnormally large eyes and unnaturally slender proportions which would in reality not have been viable under the gravity of earth. Extensive tests have discovered traces of male gametic material on the surfaces of some of these figurines, which perplexed some archeologists. It is presently unknown why these figurines were so numerous, but the leading hypothesis involves ritualistic purposes, possibly relating to a coming of age ritual for young men of the human tribes.

    Stewart Lee - ‘Bloody Beaker folk. Coming over here, rowing up the Tagus Estuary from the Iberian Peninsula in improvised rafts. Coming here with their drinking vessels. What's wrong with just cupping up the water in your hands and licking it up like a cat?’

    • @DanDavisHistory
      @DanDavisHistory Před 13 hodinami

      I'm sure this is supposed to be a joke but it makes a number of fundamental errors. Firstly, the Beaker people migrations into the British Isles did not come from the Tagus estuary or the Iberian peninsula. Instead, Beaker people came overwhelmingly from the Lower Rhine region, as well as parts of modern France. Also, they did not "row" on "improvised rafts". Europeans had been expert seafarers since the Mesolithic, exploring distant and storm battered hebridean islands paddling dugout canoes. The Neolithic people who came after were also expert seafarers, even bringing over pigs, sheep, and cattle in their vessels, which may have included large skin boats. And the Beaker people likewise travelled in proper vessels and maintained regular trade of people and goods along the Atlantic coasts and across the Channel. Finally, ceramic pottery had been in Britain since 4000 BC, 1500 years before the Beaker people.
