"How to" Mooring-Part 2- Coming along side-Full keel yacht-in astern-against the current-solo.
In Part 2 we cover my experience of coming alongside to a dock or mooring in astern, against the current, single handed using a full keel yacht. This is useful as I find you can tie up and “hang” off the mooring by the stern line without leaving the helm station. Additionally, if you plan to cast off at a certain state of tide i.e flood/ebb then this method can set you up nicely for departure.

    I did this the other day and I was worried about the pressure of the stay on the jib, possibly ripping the sail. You think it’s a problem?

      @@julianbrose9097 depends really, I’m more concerned about the pressure of the jib on the shroud, especially in high wind. That said I’d only have enough Genoa furled out to keep the bow being blown off. As for the jib, in the case you mention, I expect it will cause wear and tear but no more than normal tacking. You can get plastic tube to go over the shroud, helps to reduce that friction against the sheet and sail. However, any thing that covers the shrouds up is frowned upon. But the plastic tube can slide up and down so still able to inspect it. Personally I wouldn’t fit them but I do see the benefits if you are planning to heave to a lot. One thing that happened to me recently was that I furled my Genoa most of the way In, in 30 knots, close hauled, when I sheeted it in, because of the closer sheeting angle, the sheet caused my shroud to wind up. I didn’t have a pin in the stud for the shroud and it actually unwound my shroud in the turnbuckle. Fortunately, I didn’t tack and load up the leeward slack shroud, had I have done so-!the mast probably would have snapped.!it was a big lesson for me, only noticed when I took the sail down. But I can see benefits of having tube on the shrouds. Especially at the height the sheets rub them. Check your shroud pins!!!!😁⛵️

    I've been thinking about heaving to in order to raise the Mainsail when I am by myself. What do you reckon?

      Might be tricky as you need the main up to heave to properly. Reefing is good when hove to, but if you have a motor it’s common practice to raise the main first when heading into the wind under motor. An auto helm or tiller pilot is ideal for this solo.

    What size was the trowel?

      It was a 4mm trowel but I sanded the sharp tips off to make it more like 3mm. 3mm is recommended for a refined Finnish with low peaks and troughs. I wouldn’t have wanted to go any thinner than this. It had good coverage per litre at this rate, and a nice thickness with a nice finish.

      Thank you, I’ve been doing some mooring videos in different boats which definitely behave different, and are less familliar to me, I did one in a bilge keel that defeated me but the footage wasn’t very good. That’s a good idea and thanks for the suggestion. Very helpful to hear that.

    Hi Ollie. Must've missed this video. From my limited experience doing a night offshore cruise I personally would get organised with warm snacks readily available in vacuum flasks but I would go with lots of small snacks eaten regularly rather than a meal. I guess I would favour those energy bars with plenty of hot drinks. For this reason I've got one of those big-arsed pump-action Thermos things which caterers use & can hold enough hot water to get you through the night. My best bit of kit for a night crossing is a one-piece dry-suit "dainties". It's a fleece onesie which keeps you toasty-warm however it can get problematical if you need to take a cheeky unscheduled dump Last thing, like you, I do not hang about down below in the cabin - in & out - or if going down for a kip - foulies & wellies off in one fluid movement & straight into the sleeping bag. It can't be long before your Belgian trip. I hope the weather is kind to you guys. Chin-chin Rej

      Hey Rej, thanks for all the advice, I hear you- I will definitely get more organised, yes we’ve just completed our Belgium trip which was epic. We got hammered by 30 knot gusts which made for a rather uncomfortable and wet trip especially on the way there. I’ve uploaded a couple of short clips but it’s gonna take me a while to edit down the full vid. Was a great adventure. I could have done with your comment before we left! Snacks, hot drinks and keeping dry were all a major challenge.

    This and your undocking video are super helpful. I have a 31ft wooden Holman Sovereign ketch. She’s a long keeler with transom hung rudder. Her mid-river mooring is both exposed and subject to fast current. Seeing you peel off the dock previously, and now amble alongside in astern gives me hope. So far my attempts to go astern are a total random walk. Wondering whether having a go into a strong ebb will give me more steerage without feeling I’m in a speedboat. Thanks again for posting.

      I’m pleased to hear the vids are helpful, sounds like you have a lovely boat. You should be able to get a good feel for it in slack water, just make sure you have enough space either side for your escape route if doing a full on ebb! It’s just trial and error at the end of the day, some times I cant go astern at all depending on the wind. Trust me I’ve made some pigs ears of doing it on the odd occasion. Pick a nice calm windless day and some open water and practice going from 2 or 3 knots ahead- neutral-then astern and try go in astern for as long as you can. When I filmed these vids I must have motored about 3/4 of a mile in astern from one mooring to another. After that I felt like a pro. But- from my experiences some boats will and some boats just simply won’t do it. No matter how hard you try. Let me know how you get on. ⛵️

    Hi again. That was a piece of p*ss - a very elegant solution. These vids of yours are really peaking my interest in the Harrier. However, trying to find one for sale is another matter. They are like rocking horse droppings. It doesn't help when you look up Copeland Boats showing all the "Fox" classes but no mention of the Harrier. I think I'll keep looking for one as I think it might just suit my style of sailing. I know you've started the season but can I please make a request for a vid showing how you lift the keel at the end of the season. Once again, thank for taking the time to film these little gems!       Thanks Rej, where are you based? Yes not a lot on the Harrier out there, also they all normally need a lot of work, I know of one coming up for sale soon. A nice one too. And of course you are always welcome to come for a test sail in my Harrier. And yes I will certainly do a video just for you! I raise the keel after every sail normally. Takes about a minute or 2. Stops the barnacles growing on the keel if the boat is left in. Can’t have that extra drag!😁 end of this season I’m going to completely remove the keel and re do the tray that is bolted to the top of it. Common issue on all these lifting keelers. If they didn’t use mild steel inside the fibreglass tray then perhaps they would last a lot longer. That will the major job next year, I try to do 1 major one a year. 😁⛵️

      @@boatedout I would be very interested in the one that's coming up for sale. I am currently based in Camaret south of Brest - 90 mins from Roscoff so could view the boat within 2 days of it going on sale. I have a big problem with my swing keel. I need to drop it, wire-wheel the surface, give it 3 coats of phosphoric acid, fill any rust damage & then fibre-glass it. All carried out under the cradle, dealing with 500 kg of unforgiving mild steel. Not looking forward to it. Thanks for the offer on a vid on your keel which is greatly appreciated. Rej

    First rate instruction as I’m not a sailor but understood perfectly without watching twice. Prop travel was a new concept for me but steerage in current I’ve experienced whilst paddling canoes down Canadian river rapids many a time.

      That’s awesome feedback thank you. Sounds pretty exciting on the rapids. It’s all very similar, just the larger the vessel- the heavier and the more damage you do when it goes wrong😁 prop walk is a key characteristic that is normally working to your advantage or not. Very handy to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Especially on twin propellor boats. It’s another topic in itself. 😁⛵️

      Yes it was a fine line to be honest, in astern in tick-over was enough to start making way without the effects of prop walk- when I gave it any revs it would actually pull me back in, which is probably a key point- also if it had been a leeshore then I wouldn’t have been able to do it without a spring. Hopefully I can get a video on a leeshore with a spring as part of this series as haven’t covered any wind effects yet. So much to cover. The conditions were perfect to do this video without a spring. Additionally a weather shore probably would have blown the bow out too which again would have stopped the stern from getting out into the current enough. So it really was ideal for no spring which I feel is good for just covering the basics. Next time!😁⛵️

      Thanks for the comment, it’s a friend of mine who owns the boat, she’s actually GRP. Tyrell and Young boat builders built her in 1987 for himself and took the lines from “Secret” a Paglesham from 1932 I believe- info online about that boat. He was then asked to make more so took a mold from pioneer and made approx 20 more.

      Tyrrell and young boatbuilders took the lines from Original - 'secret' (built by paglesham in 1932) and made Pioneer (this boat) in 1987 as a boat for himself. He was then asked to make more so he took a mold off Pioneer and made approx 20 more. I think. There is some more info online about “secret”

For a full keel she handles beautifully. Some boats are just pigs to manoeuvre and it’s becoming my quest to try do these videos in more difficult boats.

    Southwold Harbour. Fished out of here for many years. This is good advice, and I've seen too many people ring it on with a few feet between them and the next boat. The subsequent panic is something else. Going astern is sometimes a problem on a vessel with a large coarse prop which is running in the oppositej hand to the direction you want the stern to go; the "paddle wheel effect".

      Yep what you describe is exactly what I’m talking about, nice to hear from someone who has witnessed it In our river. I see it all too often. Agee with the prop, chuck a strong beam wind in the mix too. For me it’s all about calculating what elements/ factors are working with/against you then picking the option that can go wrong the least! Even if it takes a few goes. 😁

    I might have been a good idea to point out which way the tide was flowing near the beginning of the video , otherwise its not clear and has to be guessed by what you are trying to do.

      @@boatedouttrust me as they say, you can see the flow direction from the opening moments as you look behind you into the water flow around the bow 👍🏻👍🏻. I helm a large single engined flybridge trawler yacht and the departure plan is very similar to yours. Almost never drive it off the berth and ahead thinking that it’s a car, which it patently isn’t. A smallish rudder on mine with a viscous prop walk to port in astern (thanks to a 28” diameter five bladed prop) means that it’s almost impossible (for me that is) to get it tracking straight in astern. If I was on an outdrive vessel then it acts very much like your trailer sailer. Great concise video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏👏
