Today Was a Better Day - Abundance of Food!🙏 - Captiva Osprey Cam (6/14)
Though I am still personally very concerned for Jack and the state of his leg, we do have reason to celebrate for our osprey family today. Just in time, the tides have turned and food came showering in today!! I have to say - cam chat was an absolute joy to witness as viewers counted the fish in quick succession, leading to a definite turn-around for our precious Darling! And yes - happy tears were flowing from many points around the world.
0:08 - Edie comes in, with no food. The osplets are hangry and tension is high.
2:13 - Success! Mom arrives with a whole catfish! Being the dominant, Ding gets the feeding.
3:45 - Catfish #2 from mom. That's TWO in one hour! Again, Ding is the victor.
5:56 - Jack comes in with a fish... Ding grabs that one, too!! BUT... here's the situation: Ding is also distracted now, on the other side of the nest - and both Darling AND Edie notice this. So.... guess what happens?? Darling sneaks in between Edie's legs & EATS!! (This is where the happy tears come in.)
11:17 - Keep your eye on the osprey on the back right. That's Darling & s/he is about to make an awesome snatch & mantle!!
13:14 - Well, would ya look at that! Two happy, well-fed osprey! Food comas are beautiful, y'all!
14:03 - Mom comes in with food & Darling is right there & ready for it.
15:38 - Food on the nest & no hungry tension to be found! Ding is eating, but Darling is okay.
17:28 - Ding abandons the food and Darling takes over with a self-feeding.
19:10 - Edie in with yet another fish!!! Darling gets the lion's share of this one as Ding watches on with no aggression.
20:56 - Darling swallows a whole fish tail!!
24:19 - All is calm - osplets full, and weather is calm. Now, if we could just get a healed up Jack...

Every time I read a post or check chat, it seems to be a different eaglet that everyone thinks went overboard. I'm no longer going to try to keep up with the name swap. Congratulations to FOLFAN eaglet #18, who successfully fledged yesterday just as the sun was rising! As of 7PM Thursday, it has been 72 hours since Darling had any food of substance. Jack has been seen - minimally. Still injured. Weather continues to be a challenge & food has been hard to come by. Wednesday recap, put simply... It's just such a joy to tune into this cam and just watch nature's plan unfold so beautifully. This once rambunctious, sometimes goofy trio have truly grown into being masters of their territory with brilliant flight skills. What happened to her? Was she taken out of best for testing?
That makes me so sad. I was so happy with Liberty and Guardian that there was no drama this year and now this. My heart is broken. 💔🦅🌈
I wish there was away to get a necropsy without disrupting the nest so they could at least learn the why of it.

Wow! 5 got really aggressive with 7. Guess they both could be ticked at 7 for being aggressive but wow!
Raucous bluejay, trying to scare off a bald eagle. He looks right at the eagle too. No fear. It was blue jays that alerted me to a problem in my yard one spring day. They were dive bombing an adult great horned owl that was sitting on the ground, out in the open. The owl just sat there so I knew he needed help. My (now ex) husband grabbed a jacket and tossed it over the owl and gathered him in his arms. The owl just let it happen. We got him indoors and looked him over. He had an injured leg. We put him in a carrier then called the wildlife rehab, who came and picked him up. Thinking on it now, and after watching years of nest cams, I bet he or she was raising owlets in the area. I never heard from the rehab place again. I should have followed up with them. They didn't bring the owl back to our area either. I feel like they should release animals back to the area where they were found. If I only knew then what I know now, I would have kept in contact with them.

What's to the left of the Eaglet in the section where the blue jay is too? You can see another bird in a tree on the branch to the left shimming it's tail and turning around towards the two birds. Watch closely and you'll see it. It's almost camouflaged but you'll see it moving

This has season has been a roller-coaster for sure...so many tragedies and now another. Dear sweet Sol looked very ill and it breaks our hearts as we all want to do something. I too do not understand the different policies at each nest but we need to respect the decisions made and pray for a good outcome. Hearts are breaking over this loss, but we know he is now pain free and his suffering is over. He is soaring high in the heavens with all the other precious lost babies. Rest in blessed peace sweet Sol. You are greatly missed.

No one knows. Some suspect lead poisoning, others an obstruction from an ingested bone. Hard to tell without a neocropsy which will not be done. Altho very very sad, he is no longer suffering.

Thanks for the great video again Wings!! Today, 6/15 LM7 still taking their time to branch. Maybe it'll be today! LM7 has gotten over their little ego burst from LM5, and is again hopping around the nest doing big wingers on a windy day :) Has had a feeding all to themself this morning and is enjoying the wind! Why didn’t anyone take him to a doctor? I see rescues all the time of this sort and nothing was done for Sol?? Wow
Unfortunately, each nest and each geographical location seems to have its own set of policies, laws, and people. Yes, we've seen Dr. Sharpe's crew fly in hanging from ropes on helicopters to access nests - and we've seen the KNF crew in Louisiana run right out in the middle of the night to snatch up a sick eagle.... there are many stories that seem to "break the rules", but even in those cases - they're following the rules that apply to their location & situation it seems. It's apparently all overseen by federal regulation of some sort, but yes... it seems to vary more than we're led to believe it can. In some cases - as in here at Redding - they simply have weighed out a range of factors to make these decisions. Those factors can be many! Here, they did mention that the nest tree is dying and therefore probbaly rather feeble. An attempt to access could have resulted in anything from human injury/death to destroying the tree/nest & even injuring one of the eagles, and frankly - by the time birds show more obvious symptoms - like avoiding food.... they're too far gone to be saved. I'm not saying I'm at all okay with leaving a sick animal to just fade away... that hurts & it will never ever feel right to me, personally - but I do understand the processes and the reasoning to an extent. I view each case for what it is, and with Sol, I 100% believe any effort to save him by the time a problem was noticed would have been futile. :(
The nest is in a dead cottonwood and was already at extreme risk. Coverage of the pair was ending this year and the loss of Sol is a double hit with one egg lost earlier. The triplets were a blast to watch and archived videos are fun to revisit.

@@WingsOfWhimsy Thank you for sharing this devastating news 😢 What I know of the federally protected species especially the eagles is they have to be grounded before they can be helped. A prime example of this is Anna and Andrea, as you mentioned above at the KNF Nests. And I know there’s been others My mind is drawing a blank right now, but who is our little eaglet that fell to the branch below the nest, and then to the ground and we thought she was doing real good, but then passed. And then you have the nest that got blown out of the tree and Cedar Rapids Iowa a couple weeks ago. So fascinating that we have all the cameras today, but geez, We get so attached to them. RIP , SOL. 🐥❤️🦅
This happened very quickly I believe, there would have been way to rescue the eaglet in time.
