Autocrossing the Accord After Not Driving it for 10 Months!
It's been almost 14 months since I was last able to attend an autocross event and it showed! I haven't driven my car at all in the last 10 months except for a few times around town in the past week and started the day not completely used to how it drove. Predictably, trying to drive it at it's limit didn't go well, and I placed 14 out 28 in the Novice class. I had no changes since the last event - upgraded rear sway bar and Micheline PS4S tires. This video is my last and fastest run of the day, although I hit the very last cone. It was a mental error that I shouldn't have made. I was finally feeling more confidence and familiar with the limit of the car's grip, and got too aggressive on the last turn despite telling myself to dial it back a little. I enjoyed having a friend ride along for the last 3 laps of the day.

My second event of the year, and this track was a lot of fun. We tracked all the way around the property instead of out and back on half of it. The laps were probably 10-12 seconds longer than usual. I upgraded to Pilot Sport 4S tires since the last event and they definitely have more grip than the DWS 06 Plus tires I had last time! I finished 7th out of 30 in the Novice class. Video of my dad's 30-06 barrel after cleaning with Iosso. The difference is night and day! After taking this video, we put a foaming boar cleanser in it and let it sit for 10 minutes since there was still copper on the rifling. I'm excited to see if it shoots better! I understand Iosso to be mildly abrasive, and I recommend you only use if needed to fix accuracy or chambering issues.

260 Rem Barrel cleaned again with Iosso
zhlédnutí 8KPřed 3 lety
After my normal routine, the barrel still had plenty of dark carbon, especially in the first 5-8". After some research, I decided to try Iosso, and the difference is significant! I ran out of time, so there is still places left to clean. I'll go back and finish it up later. I understand Iosso to be mildly abrasive, and I recommend you only use if needed to fix accuracy or chambering issues.
The chattering marks do not mean it won't shoot well. But sadly i have scoped standard factory barrels that look better.
Agreed, some of the other barrels on my channel are on standard quality guns and they looked better. This shot really well though. I didn't regret my purchase and later sold it with a clear conscience. The next owner reached out to me not too long ago and told me he had good accuracy also.
I found that my 1951 vintage (Pre-64) Model 94 Winchester has similar chatter marks in the bore which is in very good shape for it's age.
I didn't expect a premium barrel to have Chatter Marks.
what i'm about to say is a curse...knowing what we know now, 1.5 MOA is simply not good enough. Modern barrels and firearms that are cared for should always be at least twice as good as that. This gun probably sits in the safe and collects dust.
He still shoots it some for the fun of it. When he quit hunting it stopped getting as much attention.
@@Nathan_King I have several of those type guns...they don't get shot much...My first old Ruger M77 that I ever bought is the same...I'd never sell it for sentimental reasons.
While manufacturing tolerances have tightened up considerably in the last 50 years, a 1.5 MOA rifle is still a serious game getter. As a shooter, I get excited with the ragged hole accuracy too- but hunting accuracy does not demand this for meat on the pole.
Wow at least i know not to buy a Shillen barrel ever....
Very bad. Shilen suppose to have quality control before barrels leave the factory.
looks like crap honestly, all that crosshatching will not help accuracy
Genuis
So this video is a couple years old now. I'd say that they didn't finish the lapping job very well. Most all of those marks should have been gone. How did the barrel perform? Was it super accurate or so-so?
Pretty well. I only shot factory ammo and the Terminal Ascent shot about 2/3rds MOA as I remember. I bought that barrel for a hunting trip and decided afterwards I didn't need it so sold it. The newer owner texted me back and said he was getting the same. I'd be willing to guess it'd be a .5MOA shooter with handloads, if not better. My other two Shilen barrels can shoot .25-.3MOA with boxes of ammo that have the velocity the barrel likes. This one might have done the same, I'm just not sure. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Hammer forging and you get no chatter at all.
The only thing which is match grade is the price here.
hah one that had pits in it there junk to me
Not much bullets went throu thith berrell.
I’m fairly new to all this. I have a 300 blk out barrel from Bear Creek Arsenal and out of the box I saw a lot of surface rust when I bore scoped it. It shocked me at first.😮 I’m glad to know that’s common. After cleaning it with some CLP it looked brand new. We are dealing with steel after all. It’s gonna rust if not cleaned and stored properly.
I purchased a match ( not the supper match ).308 26inch 1-10 twist bbl for my savage fp10. The barrel looked absolutely beautiful inside however the groups were simply crap 3.5 to 4 moa , double checked every possible cause, re installed old bbl well over 5000 round count still shooting 1.5 - 2 moa , ok called shillen , returned bbl all specs perfect the bbl tested as good as their supper match, they said they tried some things ( won't go into detail just know they did ) encouraged to try bbl again, same results, sent back for replacement bbl . They were very nice and extremely helpful in this process, I documented all my testing and data working closely with them during process. Installed replacement bbl and was simply amazed at how well the replacement shot. I called them up immediately and the nice lady that answered when I told her who I was just gave up a frustrated sigh, at this reaction I quickly piped in to tell her the reason for my call, it was to thank them and praise them for the wonderful replacement bbl and the great service they provided. End note the first bbl was absolutely mirror finish, no imperfections whatsoever and air guaged excellent when they tested it yet still produced 3.5 to 4 moa with any ammunition. The replacement bbl while looking very good still has some minor imperfections and shoots sub moa with any amo I run through it including different weights and velocities, just prints slightly different point of impact. Go figure. This was my first shillen bbl experience and for me they get my vote for service and great barrels . Believe the target.
Looks like anything from Shilen is going to have chatter.
Hmmmm, seems pretty poorly made. It might shoot ok but a new car that drives alright but has a bashed fender is not a good product.
l have had eight Shilen match grade barrels fitted and have bore scoped everyone before the smith gets his hands on it, none of mine have ever looked so rough, in fact they looked perfect send it back for an exchange
Some of my "factory" barrels look like they used a crow-bar to rifle them (like f*cking rough, I mean RUFF). In competition, i've used Krieger, Bartlein, IBI and all are great. I have a Shilen SM 4 groove ratchet in 6mm that has a flaw about 2" back from the muzzle and it consistently shoots in the .20 - .3's If it shoots well, just shoot it. Like the paint on a race car, might be faded and flaky. But, if it drives well and wins!
The main issue is how does the barrel shoot? I have seen barrels much less than this shoot amazing.
Nathan, the leade angle is very smooth and uniform, it is chambered straight! Those small little imperfections are not going to mean diddly squat when it comes to shooting small groups. Thanks for posting, and please keep the video's coming. Another poster asked the exact model of bore scope you are using due to the brilliant optics!
nope, these barrels are hand lapped and way better than this, it is not a howa barrel how it got through QC is a mystery it needs to go back
any tips on cutting down the glare using teslong?
I try to keep the mirror clean and then just work around it. Seems like making sure the image is focused helps a little. Being able to turn the lights down just a little would be nice at times, but based on the design I don't think there is anything you can do that makes a notable difference. Thanks for watching! I'll be back to uploading videos in a few months.
Teslong offers mirrors with a ring painted around. The mirror is at a slightly different angle and doesn't give so much glare. Unfortunately, they provide only one of these with the borescope. If you order a replacement mirror set, you get one "no glare" and two or three "glare" models. Grrrrrrrrrr
Nathan, would you mind sharing the exact model Bore Scope you are using! Great Video! Thanks!

I appreciate you watching and I'm glad you enjoy them. Unfortunately Uncle Sam decided to send me overseas, so it'll be a while before I can upload another one.
Yeppers! Lots of carbon still in the barrel! Needs JB or Iosso on a montana Extreme or Iosso plastic brush!
You'll probably like the video I recorded after this one then!
Thats alot of button chatter for a premium barrel. Seen CHF barrels that were glass-like
CHF are gloss inside, but not as accurate after repetitive shots such as competition. CHF do last very well in regard to lifespan
Your video goes a long way in helping people understand gun cleaning. Some may not be aware that the carbon will become so hard that it will never come out, even with Brownell's 600 and 800 grit silicone carbide paste that is really removing metal, rounding edges and increasing the throat dia. Keep the video's coming, you are helping thousands!
The gun community has speculated on gun cleaning procedures for decades. Can't argue with the borescope. Best $55 I've ever spent on a gun accessory. I sure hope others have found it helpful and informative and thanks for the comment. I won't be able to upload any vidoes for a few more months, but I will start back up when I can!
There are no perfect barrel makers
True, but man there are a lot of really good ones! It's a great time to be into precision shooting.
Before and after would have been nice. I am wondering if you ever got the carbon out and by what method?
The original video ("before") is here - czcams.com/video/tWsB55F5SRA/video.html sorry, no video editing skills to put them together haha. All carbon came out with Iosso after a second cleaning. I used one of their brushes and was sure to keep the cream on the tip of the bristles, not down in-between them. It didn't do anything when it got down in the bristles, so I tried the tips and that worked.
Well... I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the tooling/chatter marks aren't the ONLY problem!!! At the start of the video the scope was turned showing the freebore. It's cut heavily on one side and light (with rifling showing through) on the other, before he goes up the barrel!!! The chamber is off center!!!! I'd be more concerned about that!!! I've seen barrels shoot with putting and tooling marks, BUT, bad chambering and a poorly cut crown... that's another story. Not even mentioning poorly bedded bolt guns!!😁
I meant pitting not putting!!!
From what I saw on my little screen, I'm just having a hard time believing that shilen would send barrels out like that. Sign of the times I guess. Sa far on both videos the barrel shown should have been rejected and scrapped.
I've shot this one out to 600 yards and my 260 Rem out to 1k. Regardless of how many internet forum posts I read claiming it, I don't believe any barrel shoots consistently small groups with factory ammo. OAL length varies too much and velocity swings are too great from box to box, much less winter to summer temps. But with the right ammo and shooting at the right muzzle velocity, these two barrels make really tight groups. Hard to get picky about the looks when they shoot as well as they do. But that's why I wanted to post these - to help other shooters make informed decisions. There are plenty of fantastic barrel manufacturers and others probably do look better. I'm glad I could at least provide my experiences to help you with your decisions.
Might explain why people aren't buying their barrels as much as they used to, or better put their market share has declined considerably it seems.
Precision shooting has grown exponentially lately, so I'm not sure loosing market share has to equate to their sales going down. I really have no idea though. Considering my ability and that I was using factory ammo, I was perfectly happy with its accuracy for the 22-ish shots I took with it. I'd probably argue the way the inside of the barrel looks shouldn't matter that much if the barrel is accurate.
@@Nathan_King I'm basing my thoughts on the other premium barrel makers that have taken hold. I like their barrels and they usually look a lot better than that as they do hand lap them. That one looked like maybe they skipped that step. As far as accuracy goes, most good factory offerings and modern barrels shoot well nowadays.
If you really want to get that stuff out use wipe out and set it overnight. You’ll be amazed by it.
I'll have to try that at some point. I'm more than happy with Iosso, but the borescope will let us know! I'm fresh out of dirty barrels now though. Haha
Using Wipe Out now on a 243. Soaked it a couple overnighters and cleaned about 6 times during a full day. It's working but not amazing. Borescope still shows plenty of crud. I have about 60 rounds down the barrel. It does seem to be chipping away at the carbon ring.
What borescope were you using?
Teslong NTG100
A small bit of pitting does it still shoot ok
After about 20 fouling shots, its back to around 1.5MOA which is normal with the ammo we shoot through it.
Would love to hear what shilen has to say about this!
I asked if I could send the video to them and talk to someone because i doubted it was handlapped. Their response was "Was there a problem with the way the barrel is shooting? If there is a problem, we would like to have the barrel sent back to us so that our QA department can look at the barrel and verify it is within spec. If we find that the barrel is in spec, you would be responsible for shipping back to you. If it is out of spec or they determine something needs to be done to correct the barrel we would take care of it and ship it back to you at no charge. " I told them I wasn't interested in sending it in unless I could talk to someone first because I didn't want to potentially waste money on shipping and because my first 22 shots didn't raise any accuracy concerns. I didn't receive another response.
@@Nathan_King I would bet they scope them the same way you did and cull the ones that look real good and save them for their sponsored shooters and we get the rest.
@@Nathan_King I have a shilen barrel too however it is .22 rim and through the scope it looks much worse in the grooves and lands (tons of tooling scratches) , "what they said "(shilen) go shoot it first then call if it don't work .The big problem is rimfire doesn't make enough heat and pressure to fire lap. .The only way i could make it work is with lots of slugging with abrasive grease(if i did wrong no warranty) . so it sits on the corner
@howardjohnson5734 hate to hear that. If it's just in the corner collecting dust, maybe its worth trying to fix it? Sounds like the warranty is effectively useless to you already.
What kind of borescope are you using?
It's a $50, $55 model from Teslong. I think specifically NTG100.
@@Nathan_King wow!? I’ve used one from teslong in the past and returned it because it wasn’t as clear as yours 🤔 thanks for the reply
@@mrcbrrr7484 I'd add that focusing can be a little finicky because you have to twist the mirror. Not sure if your model focused the same way, but it's a thought for you.
Button chatter?
I can't remember if Shilen does button or hammer. But definitely part of the manufacturing process, whichever they use.
@@Nathan_King Shilen utilizes button rifling. Nearly every aftermarket barrel maker uses button rifling or cut rifling. Hammer forging equipment is very expensive and generally only the big manufacturers can afford to use that process.
I bought a Criterion prefit for my M12 Savages a couple years ago. Absolutely PERFECT and for half the price of a Shilen or any of the other big names. It shoots 1/4" with my handloads.
They were a great deal a few years back. Now they are just as expensive as far as I've seen. Where'd you buy it?
@@Nathan_King Northland Shooting. Strangely, if you buy direct from Criterion, they are more expensive than from Northland.
@@patdennis3751 that's where I bought all three of my Shilens. I picked Shilen originally because you could buy them blued and I've been happy so I've stayed with them. I may try something else just because next time.
@@Nathan_King well maybe Shilen is sending their second string barrels to retailers? I think quality control is lacking with some brands. Recently, I bought a Proof Research barrel that cost a small fortune. As soon as I opened the box I put my borescope through it. NOT impressed. This was a $600+ , stainless, so called hand lapped match barrel and it had lots of pitting! I sent pictures to Proof and at first they tried telling me I was looking at oil in the bore. After a bit of arguing, they basically admitted to it and still would not replace it. I was told to shoot it and if it didn't shoot they may replace it. I will never buy another Proof Research barrel regardless of who is selling it. I still have it in it's unfired condition if they want to do the right thing and send me what I paid for. For me, my next barrel will either be Brux or Kreiger. I like my Criterion and it shoots very well so another is always an option.
QC has gone to shit these days everywhere. That barrel is gonna make the copper solvent companies rich. I just got a $600 Proof Research barrel that came riddled with pitting. They told me they wouldn't send me a new one. Pisses me off when I spend as much on a barrel that the rifle cost new and it is pitted.
Looks good bro! I have a mod 1 mk111, i love the thing.. also they don’t do a very good job of updating their website but they have since moved away from 416r to 4150 barrels which I was happy to hear. As long as your upper was made during or after 2021.. now if they could only offer chrome lined they would be king.. mines a great shooter, moa all day with good ammo, 1.5-2 with range ammo @ 100 yards.. of all the ar’s I own it’s by far my favorite one to shoot suppressed
The owner said after he did an initial cleaning it looked like it had been polished. As far as I know it still hasn't been shot, but holding it you could tell it's a high quality weapon. I wouldn't have a problem purchasing one!
how much ammunition has already been shot with the barrel
I'm not sure. I shot it for a while before i understood the value of keeping track. Maybe 1k at the time of th video?
So what, doesn’t matter!
The more stuff like this I see the more I think that the average Joe (like me) would do well to learn how to hand lap their own barrels. If you get that from a Shilen match grade, you know that a lot of lesser bbls are not going to be pretty. I think fire lapping is simple, but probably too aggressive. Thanks for sharing.
Im not sure hand lapping could even remove those marks, they are pretty pronounced ridges from the button. they happen in every button rifled barrel ive scoped but dont seem to effect accuracy(consistency) any.
This is super well done! I am guessing I have at least one barrel that would look similar. Glad to read in your comments below that this process brought back a lot of lost accuracy!
What borescope are you using?
Teslong. It was about $50 on amazon.
@@Nathan_King wow.. I could never get an image nearly that clear with my teslong. You’re using the regular monitor that came with it?
@@CallMeUbba it connects directly to a cell phone and is recorded by the phone. No screen came with it. It usually takes me a couple of tries to get the mirror the correct distance away so it's focused. But yes, I agree, it's quite clear for what it is.
@@Nathan_King Well, you’re right. I just tried mine connected to my laptop and it’s way better. Can actually see the copper and carbon now. I was literally 30 min away from buying a Hawkeye set on eBay too. Hope someone outbids me now 😂
@@CallMeUbba well, did you "win" the auction? Haha
not bad
Yes that hard black carbon. I tried a lot of solvents and couldn't remove it. the mild abrasives will work but they only remove a thin layer at a time, which means lots of scrubbing and working at it a long time. I made a chamber plug and tried soaking with different things. I had PB Blaster soaking in the barrel for three days before I had time to get to it for cleaning. After dumping out the PB Blaster I put a patch through and was disappointed to have the patch come out clean. I thought back to the Losso. What surprised me was this time with the Losso the carbon came out quickly. The BP Blaster must have softened it up allowing the Losso to take out a lot more then before.
Between this rifle and my dad's 30-06 (check out that video too), I'm a believer! My dad was completely shocked when I showed him the video of his barrel still being dirty.
