Vlog Episode 1: How South Korea Has Changed in 18 Years | A Personal Perspective

My initial experience of all things South Korea started back in 2002, at a time when not much was known about the land of morning calm. My old colleagues thought that Korea was surrounded by poverty - perhaps a hangover from the South East Asian economic crash as well as the Korean War, also known as the Forgotten War. In my very first vlog, I share my personal insights into Korean culture and ...

Thank you for sharing this video. I´ve used the idea. It worked very well
You're welcome!
Do you think it would be worth applying to work with Preply if I am free to teach lessons only weekday mornings? I'll start a part time job in September but will definitely need a top up. Thank you for your videos, they are enjoyable and very informative. 😊
@@hummingbirdcage5098 Preply is certainly a worthwhile side hustle which can help. It helps me keep my head above financial water so to speak. You just need to remember that you need to report your self-employed earnings and pay National Insurance.
@@ELTExperiences thank you for your reply. I might give it a try 🤞
Thanks for the video. Is really insightful. My question is, how would they evaluate my teaching skills? I am teaching in an international school for almost 5 years now..
just persuaded me to go teach in South Korea this is the cherry on top of all the reasons I've found so thanks mate hahaha
I’ve returned back to Korea now despite the amazing experiences that I had in the U.K.
Hello i have a questiin is it necessary to write down what students say? Do you also do it on every session?
This is a great question and thank you for your comment. For me, I try to note down as much as what the student says - both examples of good utterances as well as areas for improvement. I try to be as balanced as possible and then provide positive feedback as well as scaffold language for learners. In a way, I find making a note of what is uttered reminds me about different aspects of what the student has said and then this provides a key example of my dedication. So, yes I do this in every trial lesson.
Learn how to speak Modern Standard Arabic Contact me❤
This is a great video for all online language tutors to watch. Many tutors (especially newbies) have no clue of what they should do during a trial lesson.
Thank you so much for your comment. I hope that it helps other online language teachers.
Thank you Martin for a very helpful authentic Preply trial lesson. It was good to see how things worked out and how you were able to guide Yasu. I am a new tutor to Preply and am hoping to help adult and business students too. I have gained much from watching your videos (I'm subscribed). Today's, being genuine, has helped me understand and appreciate things even more.
I appreciate your kind words and I am glad that the video was helpful.
Thanks a lot my best tutor i was waiting for your upcoming video since i watched your last video and i was missing you a lot as well. It has been a while. ❤❤❤❤ Now i am cloud on nine today.🎉🎉🎉
Your typing is amazing. I type only one finger when i write any text🤣🤣🤣 I want to write a fantasy novel and grammar topics from basic to PhD level. Is it a good idea.isn't it ?? I am non native from pakistan and i am a college student as well. I love your every video. I want to become a CELTA teacher like you. Give me a piece of advice please. I'll wait for your text.
@nasirchnasir6970 thank you so much and with practice you will become an amazing teacher … and an amazing typewriter too! Do the CELTA asap and you won’t regret it. 😃
@@ELTExperiences My best tutor i can't take the course nowadays because i have no single penny. But CELTA is my dream goal i will definitely take this course after collecting money. I will do my best to fulfill my goal. I am studying in the semester two in the BS English field.after completing my graduation i will do M.phil in the ELT field. After that i will take the CELTA course because i want to be an expert in the English language teaching first. 😊😊🎇🎆
I love your calm nature. Commenting for support. (There's an AI tool that can type out what it hears - I think Zoom can do it too) - I'm sure you knew that but just incase, there's my 2 cents worth. hehe
Thank you so much for your input and I am sure there is an AI tool available, despite my speed with typing while listening to the student.
@@ELTExperiences That was thee most comprehensive trial I have ever seen. So well structured. Your approach is commendable.
It would have been nice if you stipulated which tefl course you were speaking about. Tefl level 5 is on par with Celta
I got 4 "Above Stadard", all assignments submittet from the first time and got grade B
That’s a respectable grade. Well done. 👏🏻
you mentioned that even the part time option would leave little room for spare time? why is this?
The part-time CELTA can be completed over a number of months which will give plenty of spare time or to work part-time too.
why are the esol jobs so badly paid in the uk? even the ones that require a celta.
Unfortunately it is the way it is in the UK with an oversupply of ESOL teachers and a scarcity of learners that are willing to come to the UK. It is a race to the bottom.
Hello nice Ice Cream, now I want one too haha. How much did it cost to have the degree notarised in the Uk ? I am looking to Thailand as my family already live there. Great information thanks.
Thanks for the comment and the question. When it came to having my degree notarised, I had a range of other documents to also have notarised as well. This all cost around £250 or so in total but I believe that one degree certificate costs approximately £70-£80 or so. In fact there is a company in the UK called Hague Apostille which offers competitive prices for one or a number of documents that need notarised and an apostille. More info here: www.hagueapostille.co.uk/. Hope this helps and good luck with your moving to Thailand. 😊
This video was really worth watching I used these tasks in my class, thanks for sharing, please create more videos like this❤
So you couldn't remember much but still made a video...
Did he have a ticket?🤨🤣
Thank you very much. This is excellent content, and I agree with all, that’s you have mentioned, especially a comfortable chair! Unfortunately, my daughter doesn’t Only teach five or six lessons a day. She teaches more like 8 to 10 lessons per day. That is a hectic schedule, as there’s lesson preparation, homework, feedback, and I need not go on. The reason, she has such a heavy schedule, is because as a South African, she is not regarded by most of the companies, as a native English speaker, and because of this, she is paid much less than other online teachers. This places the South African English speakers in the difficult position, of having to take on a heavier workload, in order to make a decent wage. This is patently unfair, and just because a country has so many official languages, does not indicate, that we are not native English speakers. We are indeed native English speakers, and we have accents not dissimilar from neutral British accents. We are not Afrikaans, nor Zulu speakers. Indeed, there are non native English speakers from South Africa who teach online, but that should be taken into account, when companies hire them. Our mother tongue is English. For this reason, I do wish the companies would recognise this, and pay us accordingly.
Wow this was great! I have my first trial tomorrow and feel so prepared!
I am pleased you found this video helpful. Best of luck with your trial lesson tomorrow. 😊
I actually wanted to know what exactly you used to do in the month of July and August when mostly the students went for summer vacations, Because almost all my students went and I'm thinking I must have a backup for this because I'm depending on preply completely ( Just to mention I'm a physics tutor, please don't get worried about my English grammar, I'm following you since you uploaded your trial lesson with a student and I'm using all those tricks in my trials thank you for that 😊)
thank you that was awsome. would you pleade teach hiw we can teach since and for in present perfect tense to esl students
Great suggestion! I shall add this to my list of video ideas.
Music unnecessary. But good
You've gotten a better teacher I saw some of your older videos. They weren't bad but you seem more at ease
Thank you ever so much and pleased you have watched my older videos. I am rather embarrassed by them to be honest.
There are usually videos just on the first assessment. What about the rest. Good video
I had the worst experience in preply! I'm so upset... the teacher turned off the camera, and he left me reading alone, I spent a long time calling him, no answer...
*on
I am so sorry to hear that. I would recommend that you get in touch with Preply and report the tutor. He is not fit to be on the platform and I am sure you would meet a good teacher, and Preply will be more than happy to replace your lesson free of charge.
wow thank you for this video it's interesting job at all and seeing my students learn from us is very fullfillng anyway I love to teach from beginners because they are moe challenging to my part and O love challenge hehehe
Great that some of your students decided to stay with online teaching!
Absolutely. It is great to hear that online teaching is becoming more acceptable these days, especially after the pandemic.
Oh, well. That’s quite an informative video! Thanks for your honesty, also. I highly appreciated, you really gave me an inside view! Since it is an English speaking country, the English teachers in state schools give actually nothing like EFL lessons, unsurprisingly. They dive into the English literature and sometimes drama and media, all of which are just not for me lol. I think most ESL teachers get unemployed within school terms since the language courses often have traffic in summer, another drawback.. But for the overall experience and particularly for those willing to see the England, it is great. I just won’t go there for anything like saving money lol. Have a good day, sir!
I am pleased that you enjoyed this video. I tried to be as candid as possible regarding the benefits and the drawbacks. The fact that everything grinds to a halt by the winter is a factor why there is much turnover in the EFL industry in the UK as well as the miserable pay, after many invest in their CPD and various qualifications. This is another reason I ended up back in South Korea.
In my free time I prefer most spending time with my beloved family and friends
Very interesting to listen to your journey. I did the standard BA in History and Spanish, then did an MA European History, followed by a CELTA. I’ve been teaching in Spain for ten years years and I’m a bit stuck thinking what next? Not sure how to get in EAP, so thanks.😊
I would recommend anyone wishing to get into EAP is to do an MA in English Language Teaching, Linguistics or Language Acquisition. There is also another route into this by doing a DELTA instead as some universities are willing to accept this as an alternative to the MA.
Thanks a lot my best teacher i am waiting 🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊😊
I hope you enjoyed the video. 😊
You are my respectful teacher. You are the brainy CELTA teacher. You are a knowledgeable CELTA certified teacher. You are a well qualified CELTA teacher.I also wanna become a CELTA teacher like you. You are the best. But sometimes i feel i can't do it because i am a non native speaker from pakistan. I have a strong desire to become a CELTA teacher.😞 but i'm doing my upmost to full fill my dream goal.

Awesome tips. Thank you 🙏
Glad you found these tips helpful! 😊
Absolute slave labour 😅! There is undoubtedly a very dark side to the ESL game! All the best Martin 🙏
Soon will be doing the full online CELTA, but lots of doubters telling me some countries won't accept an online CELTA' is that true, not that going to put me off doing it😅
The online CELTA certificate does not have any indication on it that it was the online course, and is the same certificate as the face-to-face one. The haters are gonna hate but don't listen to them.
Hello! I'm about to start a TEFL course. Is that the best certification to take? I have a DUI in the US from more than 10 years ago. Koreans get drunk a lot, maybe they won't mind?
I’m no expert when it comes to law but after ten years, don’t records for DUI get expunged? I think in the grand scheme of things, it won’t be too problematic but always best to check online to see what the recommendation is. I’m sure you’re not the first person to encounter this. In terms of certification, the CELTA or Trinity CertTESOL are regarded as the best courses to undertake. They are worth their weight in gold and will certainly open more doors for you.
@@ELTExperiences Oh! Good I asked you before I paid for TEFL! It does seem like Japan prefers TEFL. But if they will take CELTA then I will just do CELTA! Thanks! I got my DUI in Texas, I'm not sure if it's been expunged. Texas is pretty tough on DUI's. Nothing was struck and there was no resisting or anything. It was a clean arrest... I currently live in the Philippines. It's just a few hundred dollars and some hours to visit Korea in person. The apostille process for my degree and FBI background check might be difficult from here, though. Thank you! I will look into CELTA, now!
@@oodo2908 you’re very welcome and I wish you all the very best of luck. Once you have everything to go, and all your things prepared to start your contract, all will go well. I am sure. Keep me posted and I hope you enjoy the CELTA. It is available online as well as face-to-face. I really enjoyed my course.
@@oodo2908 the only thing I could find about this was in this forum: www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=406171. Upon a little digging, you could request that the DUI be expunged and then apply for a Criminal Background Check. Good luck 🤞
@@ELTExperiences There seems to be a centre for CELTA here in Manila. Having trouble finding how to register for online courses and I don't see a fee... I just read that CELTA is best for teaching adults? Will it still be considered for teaching children? Are adults the better career path?
Could you do a detailed video about how to make a lesson plan? Let's say the student's goal is to boost their grammar or speaking for example? Thanks.
That is a great idea and I will add this to my list of possible future videos. 😊
@@ELTExperiences I'd be deeply grateful! Thank you, sir!
