Rough Country Wheel Liners
To help protect the frame and bed area from mud, gravel, stones, and road salt, and to improve appearance, I installed Rough Country carbon steel rear fenderwell liners. They visually close the gap between the frame and the lower bed floor and support rails, and keep debris out.

sorry to be negative, but the narration was cringey. the footage was great!
Hello Buck, thank you for the observation, I will attempt to have better narration in the future, the channel is always a work in progress. Glad you enjoyed the video footage.
Checked rough country and don't see these liners anymore. Will the Gen iii version work on the Gen ii trucks?
Hello Bendix, try EBay or Amazon to start, there should still be some of these out there in the wild, even if RC really has discontinued them, which would be rather surprising, honestly. I don't know if a Gen III would fit, that would be a I'll try it and hope kind of scenario.
Nice video. I, like others commenting, worked up there for around 20 years. It’s not a big deal but these are not lumber trucks as the lumber is only made at the mill. These are logging trucks on logging roads. Another helpful hint is if you drive up there, please, please don’t bring your tiny SUV with highway tires unless you bring two or three spare tires with you. Four-wheel-drive vehicles with 10 ply tires with good tread will save you from being stranded.
Hello, thanks for writing in. I do indeed have Load E General Grabber AT/Xs and honestly, even when I only had LT Michelin Defenders, never got a rock cut or a flat tire. Now, with standard P-Rated tires, I wouldn't recommend, and would heartily agree with you there as far as baby SUVs and the tires they come with. And you are correct, these should be classed Logging Trucks.
The diagram helps, thanks! Plan on doing this on my Xterra.
Hello Minuteman, happy that was helpful, this is a fairly easy mod, it's just time-consuming to run the wiring from the transmission case up through the floorpan and then construct and set the guages in place. But there isn't a day I regret it, I refer to the guages all the time, while driving, to be sure everything is within good and safe operating ranges. A huge peace of mind as the truck gets older and gets more prone to do something "unusual". As a side benefit, since the guages require power and ground, I added an octopus power coupling splitter with three 12v power sockets to power up my phone and GPS unit, cleans up some of the wiring draped all over the dash. They used to get caught in the glove box door or shifter handle and it was seriously annoying. With the plethora of electronic crap that folk decorate their dashboards with these days, it very much surprises me that OEMs don't provide some hidden sockets on top of the dash somewhere. Maybe a small door near the defogger vents.
What undercoating are you using? Do you re-apply it yourself? Yearly? Thanks
Hello Marc, for the most part I'm not using undercoat, that tends to actually promote more rust by trapping moisture, I've been cleaning and rustcoating the frame pretty much ever since I got the truck, the rust coat / converter spray first, that chemically inerts the rust, then chassis paint or high-temp engine spray over that to keep the water out. I'm thinking of having FluidFilm, WoolWax or one of the other lanolin-type films sprayed on this winter, to encapsulate all the underbody components. I've read that that treatment should last 1 to 2 yrs and then you get it reapplied..
@@frontiergeek4953 thanks for the info. It was hard to tell if it had one of those types of coatings, fluid film or wool wax.
This is one of the things I thought was a good idea but never bought. Especially since other than the windows the underneath is the only part I wash.
Hello Jonny, I would recommend them, along with the homemade plastic wheeliners I constructed to protect the forward half of the wheelwell, these should keep most if not all of the stones, crud and salt residue that builds up in all those weird shaped crevices in the wheelwells, and hopefully keep the rust at bay, I plan to run this truck til it dies and 300k+ is my goal. I'm at 129k now. I have zero idea why most trucks, foreign or domestic, leave the rear wheelarches fully exposed so they can get pummeled and then rust out. Very sloppy and cheap, IMHO.
@@frontiergeek4953 yeah I was looking at that, up front of the wheel where you have it blocked is the main place for mud and rock to pile up.
Trying to determine if my heater core is actually bad? Ive got coolant leaking into the passenger floorboard. I didnt notice any leaks at this piece... trying to prevent a full dash removal
Hello Corey, sorry to drop bad news but that has all the hallmarks of a failed heater core. How much is leaking? I have a weekend toy Pontiac car that did this and I used Barr's Stop-Leak, yeah, something to be very careful of, but the car isn't run much and was far too expensive to have to pull that dash out, so I rolled the dice and tried it. I only used a moderate amount and it's still holding near 20 yrs later.
At 3:00 in I go through the same damn thing haha
Hello Levi, thanks for writing in, LOL, yes, sometimes you are the dog, sometimes you are the hydrant. Not every day or every project is 100% winning. :)
Thank you so much. How much coolant needed to refill?
I'm going to say I recall buying two gallons of premix, and it took most of it. Just keep filling, then burp it, then fill some more, will probably take two or three cycles to get all the air out, these are notorious for air trapping in the heater core and piping. Fill the degassing bottle til it's near full and park with the nose upward on a hill, if available, to assist in expelling gas.
is that condensation in the upper light bar? If so, what brand is that...may want to avoid them if I ever put in a light bar on my fronty.
Hello EC, yes, that's condensation, but my fault. I opened it thinking I was going to add some silicone sealer and then found it already was O-Ringed, so instead of an improvement, I made it worse. LOL. I will always be honest about victories and defeats, I've mentioned in a few videos where I did something boneheaded and paid for it. Que Sera, Sera. The light works okay, but it does fog up sometimes. I may pull it apart again but honestly, probably won't, it is 6 yrs old now and was only like $27.00 when I bought it way back when. I plan on upgrading to something better.
@@frontiergeek4953 Ah great. Thanks for the reply. I was worried that those lights fogged up naturally. I've been a victim of my own attempt to make something better.
Hahahahaha, sucks, doesn't it? But ya know what, if you're not breakin stuff, your not makin stuff either. Only the lazy have a perfect track record.
Good job! Source for the Anderson connector? Thanks.
Hello Erda, thanks for writing in. That is an Amazon kit, has the connector and the lid / mounting bracket assembly. I added two L brackets to get it to fit where I needed, they were just laying around in my collected parts bin, no idea where they were from originally. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CWKGGJNP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
A bit paranoid? Not a good video.
Sorry, don't follow. What's the paranoia?
Dimon's question in English is: What is this video for? Why the hell do you put double-hinged spring earrings? In order to increase the articulation of the axle, it is necessary to show that the car is not hung diagonally, and not movement on the highway and on the grass with pebbles. Are you there in the states at all with no understanding of what and what is intended? Hello Dimon, These are not to increase articulation, so I think you may be confused as to construction and purpose. They are alleged to take some of the shock out of larger on-road potholes / bumps, or offroad craters. The only way to increase rear articulation is with longer throw shocks, as they are 99% of the time the limiting factor for axle extension. Behind that would be the length of the brake lines and the ABS wires. Here in the States, once in a while we do get an original thought, I think we have some understanding of what we are doing. Have run some very rough trails and everything handled fine, nothing broke.
Looks good so far!
Hell Ryan, thanks for writing in, and thanks for the thumbs up. The steering wheel controls video drops next week, they came out good but I broke the cruise Set / Resume switch during the build, so I ordered another one from EBay, used, to pirate the guts out of. A $20.00 lesson.
One very important question is do you know JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOR?
Hello JacobLambe, thanks for writing in, and though it has nothing to do with the heater hoses or clamps, yes, I do know Jesus as Lord and Saviour. I'm also a licensed minister. It's important for us that know the Truth to Profess the Truth, and be instant in season and out, to defend and share the Gospel to the world.
That's not weather seal.
Sorry, I'm a little confused. What does weatherseal have to do with sound deadener? I'm not having any water intrusion issues, just quite a bit of noise.
Not going thru customs means you're xpassing au Canada the entire time there, and most Canucks HATE US. They can and will seize your car, put you in jail until your boss in Alberquerque or your mother comes to get you. Forget the car. It's gone. Some Canuck will buy it from customs for a song. The customs guy is going to be very unfriendly both ways. We're all drug smugglers and fleeing serial killers. Aren't we?
Hello Donald, thanks for writing in. No way we were going to get into Canada, and we didn't. There are armed guards on the American side and they made it quite clear that we should proceed no further. We were very courteous and compliant with our border sentinels and they reciprocated. When we visited Toronto years ago, the Canadians were very friendly and welcoming to us, at least the ones we had interactions with.
Not off road. Just gravel road.
For this section, yes. The side trails are the rough ones, many side trails. And even this section is much rougher than it appears in the videos, max about 30MPH before it shakes your fillings loose.
Hello Ryan. Nice documentation. Where can we get replacement bushing?
Thanks for writing in Macho. I'm not sure about replacement bushings, the ones these came with fit perfectly on the OEM springs and they are urethane so they'll have quite a long life, especially as they have basically zero torque forces and only straight-line gravity forces. For what I paid for mine, if it's necessary to change out the bushings in the future, I'll probably just switch to lift shackles, I got these ridiculously cheap by comparison to list price, and I can't really say I can feel any real "comfort" one way or the other.
Thank you so much @@frontiergeek4953
Good stuff. Is there a reason why you didn't remove that plastic Top Engine Cover That says V6 4.5 on it? Wouldn't that have viewing behind it much easier? Thanks for sharing, I have to do this But I plan on doing it when I change the Valve Covers and Gaskets So it should be much easier As I will have to remove even the Plenum and Change the Plenum Gaskets as well. That will give me lots of Clearance. I am not looking forward to doing this, My back is never up for tasks like this. So I will be taking my time for sure.
Elevopr, thanks for writing in. Good question, not sure if having the intake cover off would have made this any easier, currently we have 4" of snow on the ground so I'll take a look later LOL. With the entire intake out of the way, reaching the rear hold-down nuts may be easier, I'd have to look again at what was the main impediments but I seem to recall it was the cylinder heads themselves. I have a bad back and knees as well, so I feel your pain, literally. Many of these projects are worth doing, but are Tylenol-inducing.
Perfect timing. Im about to wire ditch lights and a light bar! I always thought this would be a good place to mount switches, but didnt know if there was space. Im doing this for sure
Hello Mitchell, thanks for writing in. Yes, there is a nice amount of space back there as long as you don't get too crazy with the harness size. Mine does sit out a small amount as it is really packed back there and won't go all the way back to flush. However in reality this has never been anything but an appearance issue, as even on the worst undulating and bumpy trails, the panel has never popped loose. Nice to hear that this video will be helpful to you.

Yeah, no joke, what is with that? Is my picture hung up in the Moose Post Office, Ten Most Not Wanted? Run away if you see this man, or this truck LOL.
ha noticed that Jan stamp. im like : no way
Hello Roberta, I'm sorry, don't recognize what Jan Stamp means. Please elaborate?
I would like to know if all the hoses are in a kit form?
Hello Robert, thanks for writing in. Yes, that is the Z1 master hose kit from Z1 Offroad. They are very well made and I had no issues with installation, but there is no master sheet included to identify what hoses go where, so don't tear apart your whole truck and then attempt to reassemble it, it will be a very frustrating experience. I did mine a few hoses at a time and matched up the old with the new. It went pretty smoothly.
It’s a wood cutters camp🤦🏻♂️
Ah, no kidding. Thank you for the clarification. It appeared abandoned, so not sure if the facility is still active, we didn't see any people or vehicles around.
@@frontiergeek4953 yes sir it probably hasn’t been used in years but somebody still owns it contact Pelletier logging they could probably put you in the direction of the owner but it’s most likely on leased land from the Papermills what I’m trying to say is the structure is owned by a logging company and the land is owned by a paper company. Still cool beautiful country
Your intro is way too long
Hello Hollow, thanks for writing in, I did shorten it in later videos, as a few others had asked that as well. I'm getting ready to completely change the intro in the next video.
Hmm, I looked at whiteline's site but did not find a 65017? I did find two of the links with different lengths. Can you let me know which of their items you chose (a link or their SKU would be awesome)?
Hello Daniel, it was the shorter of the two kits, the other is for like a Rough Country six-inch lift, if it were on a Frontier. Obviously these fit other vehicles as well, which would completely depend on how long the original links were.
@@frontiergeek4953 Great, thank you. I suspect the shorter would be fine. I have the all dogs offroad rckilla lift on my Frontier.
That should do it.
I have been waiting for you to post a video on these since talking to you on CF about them, thanks.
Glad you like them! They worked out pretty well so far, the cost was a pucker moment, when you can get the stock-ish looking replacements for about $18.00 each, but these fit correctly and should ( I hope ) fix my clunking for years to come.
It’s a private road that the “logging” trucks share with you. Lumbering would be what happens at a sawmill where logs are turned into lumber. I did not look closely but I do not think I saw any loads of saw logs, so what you saw was pulp logs heading for a mill to be utilized as raw produce.
I believe that may be correct, I saw a few outbuildings and one giant facility with 10 to 12 fair-sized structures on a secondary road, but did not seem to be anyone about, so not sure if they were just down for the weekend or was fully abandoned. It looked like it'd been sitting for a while, some of the doors were wide-open; but in midstate Maine many buildings have that "almost abandoned look" as finances are tight and the winters are brutal on paint and wooden siding. That facility appeared to be plenty large enough to saw logs, but all the trucks we observed were heading North to the mills and pulping facilities in Canada, with full trees as cargo. So your estimation is probably right.

Hello, thanks for writing in. If you have EBay available to deliver there, they can be purchased from EBay. I did not get mine from there, but I've seen them available many times on the Canadian and US websites. Hola, gracias por escribirnos. I see they never resurface the golden.
Hello Fredrick, I'm not really sure on that one. It's bumpy, for sure, but no ginormous potholes, honestly there are asphault roads here in Baltimore metro that are worse. Good shocks are pretty much a must and you'll make about 25 to 30MPH max.
@frontiergeek4953 the shaking on washboard roads is minimized at 40-50 mph. Sounds counterintuitive.
We tried that, it might have been an interaction between the truck's wheelbase and the harmonic period of the spacing of the ruts, but above a little over 30MPH it got pretty uncomfortable, tested once up to about 50 or so. We kept the speed down. I would expect a longer, heavier vehicle would be much less affected.
@frontiergeek4953 for my Ford E250 it is ususlly 45mph
Great narrative. Great video, Of the 1000's of miles of Maine roads I have traveled in my life, the Golden Road is near the top. My favourite campground is up the Ragmuff Road to Cauc dam. Tiny little jewel of a campground right next to the dam.
Thanks for sharing! I'm going to have to look for that next time we are up in that area, we homebase from Waterville area, so we end up on Stud Mill or some of the others that are closer by, more often. Great tip for the viewers in the area, thank you.
You're welcome. Stud Mill is at the top of my list. Takes me into my favorite county in Maine...😊 If I might briefly pick your brain, any access problems? did you end to end in one day? @@frontiergeek4953
We did indeed end to end, both ways in one day. About 196 miles plus transit. It was a long one, got my daughter to drive nearly the entire outbound leg. Was pretty funny, she was the one that proposed the trip in the first place, but then didn't want to drive my truck cause according to her, "it's too big." Got out to the Stud Mill, stuffed her behind the wheel and within about 2 miles she was having the time of her life. A good day, that one was. Need to do it again some time. No access issues but as well as I recall, there is a toll facility about half way up that you need to get a permit from. You'd think once you got off the Interstates they'd be done picking your pockets. Not so.
Hopefully they handle as well on our Reisterstown bumps and potholes too! Thanks for the insight on build quality and heat dissipation
Hello Travis, thanks for writing in. LOL, yes, you are not far away at all. Are you a ClubFrontier member as well? They do seem to be well designed for the heat question, major cliche but truly only time will tell. I just installed the 3157 taillamps as well, my older Chinesium tails were starting to lose elements, as I had mentioned in the video about lesser quality construction, these were made of individual boards soldered together in a ring and I think the solder joints cracked. I will be releasing a video showing them as well, old vs new.
@@frontiergeek4953 No worries at all! I'm on the forum as travis.a.chapman, and happy to have found that resource in 2020 to guide my purchase! Same boat: I'm usually OK with the rando Amazon LED because it does what I need enough of the time, but it's a dice roll. I just replaced my Katana heads: 3 years of daily driving with those as day-time running lights
Love it. Especially when those 8 wheelers won’t slow down when u ran into them. U need to stay away from them
Hello Nate, thanks for writing in. Well, the lumber companies actually own these roads / trails, so use by other vehicles ( like us ) is only by the indulgence of the owner(s). According to that, and their absurdly high weight, often 120k# or more, they have the right-of-way 101% of the time. So yes, I always give them a wide berth cause they won't slow down unless a wreck is imminent, and at that point it might even still be optional, I'm not even sure if they even brake for Moose, the only animal the Highway Patrol advises all motorists to swerve to avoid. Even given that, your chances of getting out alive are usually rated no better than 50 / 50 if in a passenger-sized vehicle.
L
I never saw them mounted this way, are you sure left and right side is on the correct side ???
Hello Alfa, yes, they can be mounted both / either ways. The installation instructions are not in English but they also have detailed illustrations and they show the bars being mounted either way. Mounting them in this direction prevents them from hyperextending and then getting "hung up" when they come back down again, although in reality the shocks and brake lines most likely would prevent that from happening anyway, as they would be the limiting factor on axle travel.
What length are your shakles ?
Hello there Alfa, 4" longer at the shackle, 2" lift at the axle. They are comfortride from Indonesia, available on EBay.
@@frontiergeek4953 ... thank you very much! I got a NP300 and will put 3.2cm spacer in the front. Mechanic says I need 7" in the back. I saw one with 6" in the back axel was not much lift. May be producer changed the way to measure? If too long I take a driller and flex and shorten by my self. Spacers front 20$ on alibaba, shakles 50$ on shopee. I live in Thailand. Save ride
@@frontiergeek4953 P.S. ... the music is really cool !!!!!!!
Thanks !!!

Do you know if this is open to atvs?
Not positive but I believe so, we didn't really see anyone else out there, except for a Chevrolet Cobalt that we strongly recommended to turn around, the trail got much rougher a few miles past where we were.
The best thing you can do with a KN filter is remove it and place it in the trash where it belongs. If you want to wear out your engine fast, KN is for you. Have a great day!
Hello Kerlio, you have a great day as well. Thanks for writing in.
Yeah, differences tend to get exaggerated when the y-axis doesn't start at 0. Initial restriction: AC Delco is 37% more restrictive than K&N, Total dirt passed: K&N let 1,750% more dirt pass compared to AC delco, Total dirt capacity: AC delco's capacity is 217& more than K&N, Filter efficiency is not that different. So does a 37% difference in initial air flow hit your MPG hard enough to make you not want to just run it all the time?
Indeed not Richard, I have not changed back, my K&N is still sitting on the garage shelf.
Just place a small filter on the hose in its factory location. NO need for a new bracket.
Hello Douglas, thanks for writing in; yes, true, there is no NEED for a new bracket, I just wanted to try the project. It was fun to engineer and produce.
Just bought a 23 pro4x this morning. Subscribed and will enjoy learning from your expertise.
Welcome aboard! Wishing you many good miles and happy trails. As the 2023 and 2014 are nearly identical under the skin, most of the mods I've done would be applicable to your truck as well.
Was stationed on the Cutter Red Birch 83-85, the history of Baltimore is fascinating and the blue crab was awesome
Thank You for Your Service, and yes, Baltimore has a long and rich history, unfortunately some of it bad, as major involvement in the slave trade, for one, but it is what it is. And much good as well. And for certain we are renowned for our seafood, my son loves crabcakes and lobster rolls.
Nice work Mr. RyanD. 👍👍 I must say you had me rollin' when you said "Dynamat type"😂
@SA, thx for writing in, we aim to please. I thought it was a pretty humorous line myself. Try to add a little low-key levity to the videos, have a little fun.
@@frontiergeek4953 I hope you know why that had me rollin'. I am "butterman2473"
I had wondered if you might be on CF as well. How's it goin, dude? Good to hear from ya.
i might do this. i did the back one. i have a 2016 sv
I did the rear vent first, then noticed this one was just a bare tube. Come on Nissan, seriously? For a $7.95 at retail pricing vent filter? It'd cost them less than a buck, I bet, if they bought 200k at a time.
@@frontiergeek4953 job security. They Want those back axles blowing out. I'll have to look into this more. One of my heat shields on one my more rotors is touching n grinding on it. I bent it back once n seemed to be of for a day. Next day grinding was back. Ugh. Guess I have to bend it up more
Dealers don't make much money on sales. They get all on the back-end, on repairs and accessories. Just like movie theatres, all their profits are $11.95 popcorn and $9.95 large sodas.
i searched thinking putting one in i pull about 4750# camper, i notice transmission gets hot when slow speed on hilly curvy roads hard shift. and add cooling fan
Hello David, thanks for writing in. Yes, I really think Nissan should have included this as standard equipment, the Titan gets one, why not the Frontier too? It's already prewired standard for a tow package, they know folk are going to tow with it, so shouldn't seeing the transmission temp be critical in these scenarios. I did add a fan on the trans cooler face, with a thermostat to switch it on; then realized that the cooler has an internal thermostat so 99.9% of the time, the external cooler is in bypass mode and the only trans cooling is going on inside the radiator. Que Sera, Sera.
@@frontiergeek4953 adding add on cooler, some said works well because it is in center. going try that. I just changed fluid was light brown/dark red. no metal wear. after fluid change, drove happy
@@frontiergeek4953 where the wires hook up to , i looked fuse box like wow tiny spaces to plug in but attach wire where? i know for sensor connections and ground but, power supply with Key on ign
Would like to see how you clear the road for a lumber truck in one lane of roadway as like @6:45// Would have liked to have heard the roar of the lumber trucks going past also. I'm one of those fascinated by being 100s of miles away from civilization.
Hello Dennis, thanks for writing in. Okay, so to your question, that piece at 6:45 is actually a side-spur off the Golden Road that we decided to go explore, logging trucks do not use that spur, except perhaps at low speed while extracting timber from a new site, they would never be flying through as shown in some of the other footage. But they do roll through at a pretty nice pace and yes, the engines are fairly loud as they pass by, those big diesels are earning their keep pulling the loads they are moving. We also enjoy being 100s of miles away from time to time, a good HAM radio or sat phone is pretty essential if you have a breakdown or medical emergency. Verizon doesn't reach that far and for certain they can't hear you now.
@@frontiergeek4953 Thanks, I'm from western Mass. and born in western Maine. I drove up to Allagash one time just to get to the end of the road. I would have loved to continue on the lumber road there to Ste. Pamphile Quebec. Thats where my Father was from. However I wasn't sure I would get there so I turned back. I love these videos. I would have thought you would have seen alot of Moose there also.
LOL yeah, I expected to see at least one as well. I think they must have my face on the Moose Post Office wall ten-most-wanted list, they avoid me like the Black Plague.
Nice basket, what size of basket is that am looking to get one that will be around the same length as the roof of my Nissan frontier.
Hello Edgar, thx for writing in. That is a Curt standard roof rack carrier with the optional extension installed, I didn't like the look of it before, to me, it looked like a guy with a size 9 head wearing a size 7-1/2 bowler LOL. IMHO it now matches the design and length of the roof much better. Basket: Curt 18115 41-1/2" x 37" x 4" Extender: 18117 21" x 37" roof basket extender
Why won’t my tail lights stay on when I turn the lights on
Hygenino, to ever hazard a guess, I'd need much more information. Have you modified the harness in any fashion? Do the taillights ever work at all? Shut off on running lights only? Or when headlamps are on?
The wife isn't the only 'long suffering' victim. After 4 minutes of yacking, the plates weren't even taken out of the box et. Honestly, I couldn't watch anymore. Hope they work for the owner.
They have actually worked out quite well. And sorry you were disappointed in the video's quality and / or length. I'll be more terse in the future, appreciate the feedback.
