SIFTING Worm Castings + SHREDDING Bedding |10 Gallon Red Wiggler Worm Bin Fed | Vermicomposting
Horizontal migration begun in this 10 gallon red wiggler worm bin quite awhile ago. I have sifted some castings a few times out of this bin since then. Today we sift out a good majority of what is left. We also shred some fresh bedding to add to this bin. And this worm bin receives a sweet feeding. A much deserved one, if I must say.

    I've watch a lot of videos with the various migration methods, but it just seems like it takes forever, and you have to plan it so far in advance. Even weeks later, it looks to me like there are still a fair number of worms in the castings. I am starting to be okay with the manual method, like Worm Ohana uses. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The "Ohana" method probably takes more total work hours spent physically handling the contents of the worm bin, but a lot less calendar time from start to finish. You can decide you want to harvest the castings from a bin, even if there is still a lot of bedding in it, and do it in an afternoon the same day you decide you want to do it. But that afternoon, you will be doing nothing but separating worms and bedding from castings.

    • @deewormsvermicomposting
      @deewormsvermicomposting Před 2 lety

      To each their own. Everyone has they're own method that they prefer. I like the migration method because it's less hands on and sometimes I do not have 3-4 hours at once to complete it. I'm fine with 10-15 minutes at a time over let's say a month. Not so overwhelming.

    I've learned more from you in 2 videos than I learned in the 4 hours of videos I watched yesterday. Seriously! I've seen holes in the bottoms of bins and around the tops of the bins and the lids on other's systems...I noticed you don't have holes. Is there a reason why they do or you don't? Thank you! ~Kelly

      Some believe that lechate ( the fluid that leaks out of the worm bin) is good for their plants, when in reality it's not. It's just rotten food excess that is no good for any plant or garden. OR they are afraid of their worm bin getting too wet and having excess moisture. I personally do not need or want any holes because some bedding would fall out, which would drive me crazy and also if your proportions of browns and food scraps are correct and well balanced there shouldn't be any excess of fluids in a worm bin. Thank you so much for your kind words 😊

    Oh wow, toilet paper rolls! I didn't even think about that! Mine are cardboard but they are white...would those be ok? Or are they bleached and would hurt my ecosystem? I just started researching this yesterday, so this is likely a rookie question, but...you don't ever add more layers like in the beginning, correct? You just add (and bury) your browns and foods and THAT is what makes more "soil", is that right? Subbed! Ty! ~Kelly

      I would rip out a small piece of the white cardboard and test it out. I've never encountered white toilet paper tubes. 🧻 As for the layers, they are added at the start of a new worm bin and then I add little by little burying everything under the current material already in the bin.
