WHO AM I
🤓 I'm Octave, a former cognitive science student and musician living in Paris. I got back into acting to improve my stage performance when I was singing at Open Mics, and ended up creating an acting school around my research (Paris Meisner Studio). I also studied different approaches of therapy and coaching, especially NLP and ericksonian hypnosis in which I am fully certified, and now in a long Gestalt therapy training. I got into film production firstly to document the work we were doing at the school and to film students scenes. I have recently produced and co-directed our first short movie "C'est pas le Pérou !" which is available on OCS, myCANAL and Amazon Prime Video. I do photography as a hobby and to practice composition and colour correction.
PARIS MEISNER STUDIO
🏫 This is our acting school & research center in Paris. I developed it over the years, at first in order to train for free, and fly acting teachers (Meisner technique in particular) from all over the world to bring quality training where we were. It now hosts an original research program called "Meisner & systemic coaching" that mixes Meisner approaches and other acting techniques with tools from therapy, coaching, meditation, and scriptwriting and production principles.

    Great video! I do think it’s okay for a technique to be developed over time. There is nothing wrong with that. That’s exactly what happened with the Stanislavski system into Adler, Strasberg, Hagen, and the Meisner technique. If a teaching is stagnant it could be a problem. I don’t know who he is throwing shade at about a falling out with a certain teacher. I believe he is talking about Bill Esper and bill just added to the technique. That’s why he has so many successful students. Bill also didn’t change much from the teachings at all. So if it’s not Bill Esper I have no clue who he is talking about. .

      I would disagree with that arbitrary distinction ;) Some of those actors are actually professionals and getting paid to act regularly at that point. A lot of "famous actors" have different techniques, or no techniques, and some of them don't produce great performances when they work in an environment that they don't know, for a role that doesn't perfectly suit them, etc. Most importantly, it was a discovery of this acting approach for all of them during a short workshop, on a scene they had just received. There weren't many takes like they would be for a movie you would then edit to chose only 1 out of 5 or 10, and spend whole days of shooting for 2 or 3 "useful" minutes of film in the end. But yes we might do more of these in different conditions, and document better what the conditions actually are. Thanks for commenting.

    This is a great style to embrace. However, I’m slightly confused that, in the beginning do the exercise, the teacher had said “if she then says yell-yellow shirt” you have to repeat it the same way. Then shortly after, she mispronounced her words, the gentlemen related what he heard her speak, and the teacher had told him not to do that. Curious if I’m just not understand or if I missed a direction.

    • @liquidbraino
      @liquidbraino Před 7 měsíci

      You don't have to repeat it exactly the same; just repeat and don't overthink it. The whole point is to stop thinking and start listening. When in doubt, repeat. Don't try to change the repetition and don't do anything until something happens that makes you do something. There's videos of Sanford Meisner himself teaching this stuff.

    Great interview and video. The only thing I'm afraid I have to disagree with is what the interviewer said. Involving martial arts, "You learn the exact same thing going from one teacher to the next." This isn't true, acting and martial arts are very similar. Whenever you're learning anything like acting, music, or martial arts. It can be the same if you go to someone else who teaches the same technique, obviously! Nonetheless, there are many different teachers, styles, and techniques to learn from. You need to find the right one that suits you. The worst teacher/trainer in any industry is the cookie-cutter trainers. Or like Jim said, teachers who parrot their version and every time that style gets passed on without following it directly from the source. It ends up getting diluted and weaker every time!

    • @PlayGroundsChannel
      @PlayGroundsChannel Před 11 měsíci

      Thanks Matthew! Glad you liked it. Yes, techniques end up diluted when protocoles aren't clear or proper training and certifications are not in place to make sure that a field is properly taught. Everyone can change a technique and make it their own and that is fine, or create new ones and mix a few. But when I started discovering the "Meisner technique" I trained with different teachers who were speaking "different languages", as Jim says. To the point that they were giving contradictory advise and rewarding completely different types of behaviours, and all calling it "Meisner". And they did so because of ignorance, not because the technique itself couldn't be properly laid out or because it was so subjective that it didn't have a clear curriculum, with clear exercises with specific names and functions at each step. Martial arts, or therapy techniques, which also deal with unique human beings, their experiences and emotions, have developed clear protocoles and have specific structures and history. Every practitioner is different but there is some basic clarity for each approach instead of esoteric discussions about "letting go", or "being yourself", or "being free". One person can be trained in Gestalt, ericksonian hypnosis, and NLP, and another one in cognitive behavioural therapy and EMDR. They can mix things, but they have proper trainings for each tool. Otherwise you'll have no idea what you're in for as a student or customer. I meant to highlight the discrepancy between the seriousness that is required in other fields, and the casualness with which so many "acting teachers" research and train at their craft and approaches. The whole point of this channel is to clarify what techniques are, how they work, and where they come from. Hope it makes more sense.

    I’ve been struggling to access tears in scenes recently. I’ve been quite “abusive” with my memory recall to force emotion. I’ve dried up emotional wells of fabricated awful events happening to my loved ones to squeeze out tears for the camera. …I chose a happy memory here, and I smiled and laughed in the dark by myself in my room reliving this happy memory. I still know and speak to everyone in that memory….yet, when I was told to “let it go”, the loss I felt is still with me. Hugging friends and loved ones goodbye, and saying goodbye to my past self….I don’t know. I hope this video helps so many others. I’m going to keep working on using this in the future. Thank you so much! ❤

      This guy isn't the best Meisner Teacher. There's plenty of others but they're not all great & this guy is making it more complicated than it needs to be. The key to the Meisner system is simplicity; not overthinking. The whole point is to stop thinking and overthinking everything and to remove all intellectually from the actors instrument to make them a spontaneous responder to whatever is happening. This guy interrupts too much; over analyzing everything; over correcting every little detail.

      @@liquidbraino I agree yes. It also makes me doubt the whole process and technique as most folk I’ve known to go on about it, go on about it like this. And then they’re not even that great when they actually film:)

    • @liquidbraino
      @liquidbraino Před 7 měsíci

      @@januddin8068 Some of the most famous actors in the world trained with Sanford Meisner. The technique definitely works. Find a documentary called "Theaters Best Kept Secret" if you can find it. Gregory Peck; Jeff Goldblum; Mary Steenburgen; James Dean; Marilyn Monroe; Sigourney Weaver; Steve McQueen; Peter Faulk; Tony Randall; Dianne Keaton; Christopher Lloyd; Grace Kelly; James Gandolfini; Anthony Hopkins; Robert Duvall; Sandra Bullock and a ton of other famous actors trained with Sanford Meisner. He was one of the founding members of the Group Theater. But of course the Meisner technique' isn't for everybody, only the actors who actually want to be any good at their craft train in the Meisner system because it definitely isn't easy once you get a year or so into the training. Gregory Peck once said he was "never comfortable; it was a year of stress and strain. You might get a nod of approval from Sandy and that would be a red letter day but on other days it was disastrous". A lot of actors avoid it because it's too much work but if you really want to be good at something why *wouldn't* you work as hard as you possibly can? If you're doubting his technique then you're not a real actor because every famous and successful actor on earth knows his name. The shitty actors are all Method or Character or Adler trained; the ones who go way over the top with ridiculous over acting and no sense of subtlety at all. That's exactly why I'm not a method actor. My best friend is a Method actor and he sucks; he's the reason I gravitated away from it and trained at a Meisner school instead. But all method actors suck in my opinion - if they're strictly Method and never trained in any other techniques. Method also isn't the healthiest approach to acting; Dustin Hoffman had a nervous breakdown after performing in Death Of A Salesman on Broadway because of his Method Acting.

    The problem with Strasberg is that emotional memory is not only potentially traumatic but it doesn't stay the same over time. Something that embarrassed you and made you angry 10 years ago could be something you laugh about today. It's better to have a refreshed new scenario that brings the emotion from the core of your being rather than from an external experience. In that way, Strasberg was not acting from the inside out, he was taking external experiences and transforming them into internalized ones which is fatally flawed. Not only did Meisner disagree with this, but that was also the conclusion Stanislavsky came to as well which he directly told Stella Adler when she went to talk to him about the flaws of those things and found out he had already long abandoned the idea of emotional memory. Strasberg heard this and he basically dropped out of acting because he knew it wasn't effective but continued to teach "the method" for a long time afterwards despite knowing it wasn't helping anyone. Meisner considered Strasberg to be a fraud who would look for people who already had greatness in them and invite them to study with him just so he could say he taught them and credit himself for their already blooming success in acting.
