I really like this, I was just thinking about a 3D printer that can increase it's build volume, the idea was that it could print extension tracks. But this is far beyond that.

Locating the print head could be solved with software, Have it deliberately collide with the frame and detect hitting it by measuring the increased electrical load put on the motor when it collides.

I tried printing the indicator out multiple times. No supports, printing it slow, very little brim due to how fragile the connections are, but I can't print that thing out.

But will it be able to troubleshoot and fix another printer? I have been working on a robot that can troubleshoot and fix another version of itself. All of the tools already exist (machine vision, circuit simulation, etc.) but getting them to all work together and actually be accurate has been very difficult. Okay, actually, impossible so far, not to mention moving stuff in physical space is a huge pain. BUT if we can build a robot that can fix other robots, we can finally get the future dystopia of our dreams bootstrapped!

One improvement I saw onto screw. You have bolt and nut. With longer bolt your roteable nut will not fit tightly to the bolt. So you need oposite force, some ball bearings with spring maybe. Have a nice day.

bit late to this party but uh, there is a way to fit the big box into the small box. Disassemble the big box into smaller parts. Though in this analogy that would lead to needing assembly so while it's possible to fit the big box in the small box, maybe not a great way to go about it... unless you have the printer rotating and controlling already printed parts to print more parts onto it after production. 🤷‍♂
