BERSERK 369 - No...
#berserk #369 #manga
I feel like I have said this statement at the start of every single one of my recent chapter reviews, but man; Berserk is TRAGIC and BRUTAL, and this most recent chapter, chapter 369; is perhaps one of the darkest, saddest chapters in recent memory.

Im no philosopher, but I guess that a "flaw" of the utilitarianism is exactly what the Eldians experience since the first moment: in the perspective of the designated victim, the choice can seem arbitrary. If someone kills you, you wont see the fruits of your sacrifice. If someone does a bad act to you for a greater good but doesnt tell you, it will appear to you as an arbitrary cruelty. And even if you know it, its way harder to tell you that you dont have a right to rebellion, even if in the trolley and utilitarianism view it would mean to help the ones letting 5 people taken out. This is the fundamental conflict of the eldians and its exposed in the cave scene, where Eren understand how it could help everyone being eaten and desires so, until historia express her hostility toward this idea

48:41 I feel like the king is also telling Griffith that his dream isn’t as important as the people he loves. Since the king, despite having almost everything he just wants his daughter (creepy) which is completely different from Griffith who has friends and people who love and admire him, but Griffith still desires more, something more narcissistic. He already has what most people desire, respect, a purpose and love but he still strives for more

I think it’s notable that corkus is very obviously drawn to be an older man, probably the oldest man in the band of the hawk. It can be easily understood that with the life that he lived, he is a survivor, much like Guts, but as a dark reflection of what could have been. Corkus’ sword is broken on Guts and he despairs, Guts’ sword breaks on demon teeth and chooses to go for the next weakest thing, his own arm and continue to resist. Many many parallels between Corkus and Guts

Don't forget that Japan has an obsession with German stuff.. Because Prussia helped them develop their army back in the 19th century. You see that in Anime all the time and.. AOT is based on Germany like the names, environment, Mythology and History. Even their Uniforms and rifles look German. I think that Guts is based on Götz.. Even if the creator of berserk said it was an coincidence that they are so similar. Don't believe it.. They are waaaaay tooooo similar.

Some things are still confusing to me though.. like in Griffith's flashback on the godhand, one of those godhand guys is clearly shown as the old woman in the vision. This makes me think it is part illusion. What do you make of that woman being the demon guy?

Corkus is delightful to be hated, as you said, he was written for that purpose (on the surface) but he's statements, even filled with jealousy or hate towards Guts, always had some valid points. Despite everyone being "engulfed" by Griffith's dream, in the world of Berserk where we are used to see only pain and despair, a "nobody" (like basically everyone from the Band of the Hawk are) becoming Noble and having the opportunity to enjoy a good life is what most people would want or be satisfied, but maybe won't admit because it would sound not so virtuous. Corkus was important to "state the obvious". Also, we kind hate Corkus because he shows weakness that most of us would show in the world he lives and the situations he faces. We like to think we relate to Guts (just read the comments of anything that has Guts as a theme. A lot of guys saying they can relate to Guts, and his suffering, and his stoic way of living. I mean, come on, really?!), but the harsh truth is that you hardly find someone as strong as Guts or determined as Griffiths. Most of us are "Corkus" trying to be better. And we know it. And we hate it.

Sharing my critical view and opinion: I want to make it clear that first of all I don't see Wyald as an unnecessary character for the story, he demonstrates a certain impact as was shown in the 2nd part of this video series. However, I still have complaints with the character because: 1st Miura is not perfect and Berserk is not perfect and this should be more recognizable, 2nd his actions are oversaturated and underestimates the viewer's intelligence and ability to interpret. remembering that Berserk, being a Seinen, must maintain as its main characteristic the taking of subjects aimed at the adult public and, also for this reason, the same public has a wide range of opinions, this is just mine. ------------------------------------------------------ In summary, my main complaint about the character is due to his clumsy construction which, even though it can be used as an argument to explain his childish and cruel behavior, expresses a lot of ignorance towards the reader since it reduces the artistic expectation of the work due to the lack of concern in approaching the subject of "evil" in a less saturated and more upfront. ------------------------------------------------------ we had already been introduced to the cruel, visceral, promiscuous and degenerate world of Berserk long ago until the battle with Zodd and Griffith's torture the need to make the reader more shocked led Miura to transform the already visceral enough work into something completely below expectations, the evil of the character Wyald is presented in such a chewy way for the reader that he does not need to carry out any activity of reading and comprehension of those actions for the sake of the plot. ------------------------------------------------------ That, generally, does not pose a problem when placed in a work that one does not want to have trouble watching and just wants to relax, this is incongruous with the mature structure of a Seinen, mainly of Berserk caliber. ------------------------------------------------------ Berserk is recognized for being a visceral work, but that doesn't stop it from exploring evil in its most tangled pursuits to force the viewer to try to understand behavior. ------------------------------------------------------ My main problem is the scene of the village. for many, they'll say that the cruelty inflicted on the citizens of that village who helped our beloved troupe of heroes was something brilliant to break expectations and explore the evil of the apostle Wyald. For me i think of it as something saturated and unnecessary, if the objective is to explore Wyald's evil and demonstrate his childish and cruel behavior, is it really necessary to sacrifice the reader's intelligence to interpret the scene in a more dignified way? I mean, If you want to portray someone as a bad person you don't necessarily need to make them the worst in existence, and even if that was the objective it certainly wasn't necessary to rape all people, behead all of them, dismember all of them them and use bodies as banners for that and, my actual problem, make the viewer watch all this, if you want you can skip all this but it's still is something exacerbated and disrespectful to the reader's intellectual capacity, i ain't dumb to understand he's bad, there is no need to force this onto us who are reading and even in a seinen where the message is the most important thing such a forced thing is done. ------------------------------------------------------ As a reader I don't set my eyes on gratuitous violence or rape or something as grotesque as if I'm not going to gather a message that is being used as an artistic basis for it, I'm not a masochist to see something bad which is shallow and insults my intelligence and much less sadistic to see it as if it is normal to use something so sinister without giving proper impact, I hate trivializing it. ------------------------------------------------------ Is just my critical opinion as someone who values what he reads.

Corkus is a real relatable character. I found his feelings of fear and envy to be relatable compared to the other members of the hawk that where more typical of protagonists, fearless and perfect. But Corkus wasn't scared to tell Guts he was wrong when Guts was truly acting childish and no one else would stand up to him (Guts whole reason for leaving the Band of the Hawk in the first place seemed completely outrageous to me). And then despite his nature CORKUS STAYS WITH THE BAND OF THE HAWK THROUGH ALL THEIR TROUBLES!!! People should at least respect him for that!!! He used to be a leader of a gang of thieves but left all that to follow Griffith. He could have easily left and started anew when Griffith was gone but Griffith was someone he really respected. SO MUCH SO HE STAYED WHEN SHIT GOT TUFF HE WAS A REAL ONE!!! I just honestly liked his character more and more as Berserk 1997 went on.

  • @JachymorDota

Corkus was just a "real" person, in all that makes sense in that world. Someone who did anything he could to survive and reach a point of comfort and wealth. He did manage to attain rank under Griffith, after all, even though he lacked courage and exceptional strength. He was loyal though and able to keep up with the _seigh_ Purple Rhino Knights, so there is that. He might be the perfect middle manager of our time: Keeping that store branch up and running while maybe even beinh content with his place is in the hirarchy, as long as it is comfortable.

I was molested by my cousin as a kid, I was secually assault by my teacher within the same year. A part of my died when I was young, I lived life on auto pilot going on, never telling anyone what happened. Divorced parents, suicide attempt by my sister I had to talk to her to keep her awake, all the while I quietly withered, disappearing. In highschool I was an overweight loser but I found good people, but I began abusing substances to the point of isolation again. I was constantly moving growing up so I lost most of the people I did get to know and learned to never commit, dropping out of highschool I lived another 3 years of isolation with no job with my father but at least away from drugs. Lived a good year or two in college, felt fresh with new friends but a broken heart left my spiraling again, lost all my friends and barely passed my course but never got a career. Moved alone to a city trying to get a job and grow up. After another year I started abusing drugs again, worked in a shitty dollar store and quit, I entered the worse adult phase of depression. I regained all the weight I lost growing up, moved in with my mom and contemplated suicide on the daily, I did the therapy and opened up about my trauma for the first time in 27 years which helped and did SSRI's for the first time which I wish I hadn't tbh. Then, I found Berserk, and I cried, I was a spectator of guts life but I felt connected, as if he was a brother in pain. I saw myself in him, his eill to survived helped me at the most curcial moment of my life and I'll never forget it. I never truly understood the idolation of celebrities but when the Author cried, I felt genuine pain I never thought much of the author, I assumed he expressed himself through his work but at his death I truly felt how much I cared about his work, anr by proxy him. I could never thank him enough, I entered college again and I'm doing good. I feel like I'm starting my life at 30, thank you guts, thank you berserk thank you Mr. Kentaro Miura

There's a lot of Carl Jung within Berserk. Griffith begins the Story as the Classical Hero archetype while Guts is the Anti-Hero archetype. However as the Story progresses Griffith loses the Battle with his Shadow as Jung would put it and fails to assimilate the Shadow within him, where as Guts eventually wins the Battle with his Shadow and assimilates it into his Consciousness. Because of this Griffith ends up becoming a Villain and Guts develops into a true Hero. If you ever enjoyed Berserk on a deeper level this is why, it has some seriously mature themes woven into the Story past the elements of Dark Fantasy.
