Using Clean Armor 705 Exterior Clear Coat for an outdoor maple bench
Originally posted on our Instagram channel: pC7ZL166AV-U/
This is the last of the owner’s maple slabs we’ve been working with for her art gallery projects, with some of the most incredible character we’ve ever seen: spalting, curl, worm holes, birdseye, you name it, it’s in there!
It will be an outdoor bench, exposed to the elements. So we decided to use the new @cleanarmor UV curing resin finish we discovered*. This time, their Wood 705 exterior satin clear coat. Compared to the interior 700 finish we first tried, both are free of dangerous VOC (volatile organic compounds) & HAP (hazardous air pollutants), provide a completely waterproof and durable finish but this one has additional protection against constant UV exposure and its damaging effects, like wood discoloration. We want all that beautiful figuring to be well preserved!
*This is completely unsponsored content. We discovered @cleanarmor on our own and purchased the products ourselves to determine if they are a good fit for our finishing workflow.

Our First Test of Clean Armor UV curing finish
zhlédnutí 969Před měsícem
I recently stumbled on a new wood finish that is supposed to provide the beautiful natural-looking & satiny clear coat that we love in the hard wax oil finishes we’ve been using. It’s a product from @cleanarmor that is easily applied, has NO VOC (volatile organic compounds), HAP (hazardous air pollutants) and no hazardous disposal requirements and is much more durable. What really got my attent...
Stoolhenge - rustic stool made from salvaged pine slab
zhlédnutí 87Před rokem
It reminds me of that prehistoric monument we visited in England. So I’ll call it “Stoolhenge”. Although they were about 3” thick and heavy, I decided to make a stool from the cut-off pieces of the slab benches I previously made. For this I chose splayed legs but kept the mortises square to make the build more straightforward, or so I thought. There were a number of angle cuts I had to make to ...
Wooden Stool from rough pine log off cuts using timber framing hand tools
zhlédnutí 114Před rokem
Original Post on my Instagram channel: pCuHYWequoBe/ Before I can graduate to good timber, I need more practice with my new timber framing chisel trio on some rough pine. This time I’m using an ugly bark slab piece, leftover from milling a pine beetle & carpenter bee scarred log. Normally, these get chopped up and thrown into a campfire but it’s more satisfying to find a way to p...

Original Posted on my Instagram channel: themountainmakers The second in my set of timber framing chisels arrived sharp and ready to go. Since I’ll need quite a bit of practice before I get to the big project we have planned, I decided to use it for something I’ve always wanted to make, something that uses a pine log that I set aside a few years ago. It was a hot day under the ca...
Hybrid Spoilboard using Microjig Matchfit dovetails for conventional clamping AND vacuum hold down
zhlédnutí 748Před rokem
Success! I made and tested the first version of my new hybrid CNC spoil board design, featuring 2 modes for holding material: Mode 1: clamp hold downs using Microjig Matchfit® dovetail grooves and hardware, along with conventional clamps like the ones I use on my Shapeoko XXL from Carbide3D (a Shapeoko spoil board design like this is on the horizon!) Mode 2: grid gasket vacuum table, something ...
Live edge poplar stool (or small bench build) Part 2
zhlédnutí 185Před rokem
Every now and then, I make myself slow down and get back to basics with hand tools - and just a few power tools still in the mix. It’s always a fun learning experience to make things as you go, with no drawings or plans to guide the process. Plus, a freestyle approach is a great way for me to just “zen out” and let things go with the flow. So far, this live edge poplar stool (or now bench) is c...
Leather strap upgrade for my Atlas46 Bennington Chest Rig
zhlédnutí 99Před rokem
It was time to upgrade the straps for my @atlas46gear chest rig to something more comfortable and robust. I’ve been regularly using a chest rig instead a tool belt or apron since I’ve found it to be more functional and less cumbersome for daily use. The only issue I’ve had is that the stock nylon straps tend to fold and twist too easily on me. So out came the leatherwork ammo box. I bought the ...
First prototype for hybrid vacuum table for CNC using Microjig Matchfit dovetail grooves
zhlédnutí 504Před rokem
Tool talk: In past videos, you may have noticed that I’m a fan of using a vacuum table for my CNC production jobs. It’s a hybrid table that allows me to use vacuum or screw inserts with conventional clamps to hold down material during jobs. I’m also a huge (unsponsored) fan of @microjig products like like their Matchfit jig & fixturing system, particularly their dovetail track screws. So I was ...
Rustic pine slab bench made from salvaged wormy pine, Method 2

The second build of two benches made from salvaged wormy pine. Previously, the mortises and tenons were roughed out with the chainsaw then hand-chiseled and rasped to create as tight a fit as possible. Rustic bench build, from salvaged pine log. Method 1
zhlédnutí 90Před rokem
About 4 months ago we salvaged a fallen pine tree that succumbed to pine beetles and a gust of wind. At the time, we milled some thick slabs and used them for a gathering by laying them on top of stump legs as temporary benches. Now, after they’ve been air drying a bit more, I wanted to make them into real benches, starting with this mortise and tenon build using mostly a battery-powered chains...
Chess Knights on 4th Axis Stepcraft M.1000 CNC

When I added a production CNC a couple of years ago, one of the requirements was having a 4th axis, or the ability to rotary cut, like a lathe. This was driven by plans to make custom chess pieces. Along the way, we learned that most pieces can be made more efficiently using a lathe. Our 3D modeled knight pieces don’t make it so easy though. Up to now, it was more convenient using a double side...

I used a tack cloth prior to applying CA. Big mistake as the residue from the tack cloth prevented the CA from self leveling.
