MV Loch Indaal was launched today (Saturday 8 June) at Cemre Marin Endustri shipyard in Yalova, Turkey.
The vessel is the second of four ferries being built at the yard and will serve Islay and Jura alongside sister vessel, MV Isle of Islay, which was launched in March.
The launch marks continued progress in Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited’s (CMAL) commitment to delivering new ferries to serve the Scottish islands.
Representatives of CMAL and key project stakeholders were in attendance to witness Elaine Anderson, wife of CMAL’s Director of Vessels, Jim Anderson, officially launch the ferry.
Scheduled for delivery in February 2025, MV Loch Indaal will significantly boost capacity on the Islay routes, with the ability to accommodate up to 450 passengers and 100 cars, or 14 commercial vehicles. This addition will increase vehicle and freight capacity by 40% on the Islay routes, strengthening the overall fleet's resilience.
The vessel will now undergo further outfitting and preparations in the water before comprehensive sea trials take place. Once complete, the vessel will be handed over to owners, CMAL.
Upon its arrival from Turkey, MV Loch Indaal will undergo crew familiarisation and local operational trials before entering service.
An official naming ceremony will take place on Islay early next year, where stakeholders and community representatives will be invited to board and tour the vessel to celebrate its arrival before it officially joins the fleet.
Kevin Hobbs, Chief Executive Officer at CMAL, said: "The successful launch of MV Loch Indaal represents another major achievement in our shipyard construction program. Following the launches of MV Isle of Islay and MV Glen Rosa earlier this year, it is wonderful to see another vessel in the water.
“We look forward to the ferry’s completion and delivery, and to seeing the positive impact she will have on our communities as she enters service next year.”
Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, said: “This is another important milestone in the Scottish Government’s commitment to delivering six new major vessels into service by 2026.
“I have no doubt the communities and businesses on Islay and Jura are looking forward to a more resilient and modern ferry service, with further vessels set to bring similar improvements to other parts of the Clyde and Hebrides Ferry Services network.”
Duncan Mackison, interim Chief Executive of CalMac, said: “We welcome the launch of MV Loch Indaal and are looking forward to the vessel joining the CalMac fleet. Her addition will increase resilience and will also significantly increase the number of passengers and vehicles we can carry on the Islay route.
“With six new major vessels due to join the fleet by 2026 and significant infrastructure upgrades at numerous ports and harbours underway or planned, we are confident that lifeline ferry services for Islay and across the network will continue to improve.”
The first vessel for Islay and Jura, MV Isle of Islay, is due to arrive in Scotland at the end of the year, with MV Loch Indaal scheduled for arrival in February 2025.

MV Glen Rosa Launch-9 April 2024

It was a historic day at Ferguson Marine, Port Glasgow, as we gathered to celebrate the launch of MV Glen Rosa, the sister ship of MV Glen Sannox, set to serve the communities of Arran. As the Glen Rosa gracefully glided into the water, the echoes of the Skye Boat Song filled the air, piped by Stuart McMillan MSP. Former apprentice Beth Atkinson had the honour of officially naming the ship, chr...

    I think may need more turkey ferry orders . Four orders may need more new vessels .As the older assets are prone to having breakdowns.

    Why is cma wasting time and money on this self-congratulatory nonsense when it has two long overdue and much needed ferries stuck at port Glasgow which tend to indicate much of this video's content and claims are just rubbish 🗑?

    Don’t worry, after independence you’ll be lucky to get a new row boat. No point in polishing medals in a video when you can’t serve the Isle of Arran properly. Your fleet is falling apart.

    That $580 million will ending up paying for TWO ferries and port changes that are years late and will require their fuel to be trucked up from England. Meanwhile the rest of the fleet is breaking down more and more because they are old and worked to death. If the Board had any scruples they would resign.

    I wouldn't be investing in the new Arran ferries since they're likely never to sail since Sturgeon and her mob completely messed things up. Theyve certainly promoted the shipbuilding industry for the likes of Poland and Turkey and effectively destroyed the industry for Clyde built ferries.

      I'm not sure why a private shipyard failing to fulfil its contract obligations has turned into an exaggerated political witch hunt. At the end of the day, it was Fergusons who rushed construction and knowingly built the vessel to the wrong specifications so they could keep to schedule and keep claiming their "milestone completion payments" to pay off their debts. When it blew up in their face, the owners jumped overboard and left it to the government to waste time and money cleaning up the mess they created while using them as a convenient scapegoat.

    • @ozzy8286

      @@paulheenan9098 Are you serious. It's not a witch hunt,, its just simply the SNP being completely stupid and ignoring every piece of advice from those who were in the know. They were so many red flags but of course they were ignored because the SNP wanted to influence the voters with the "good news: about the ferry contract. They deserve all the flak they get because they totally brought it upon themselves.

Why did Peel invest in multimillion pound linkspans for a passenger service. The whole Cal Mac/CMAL quango is one of the biggest waste of cash in the Scottish Government portfolio

    What will happen to the MV Hebridean Isles once the new ferry is in service. Furthermore, what are the plans for MV Caledonian Isles and MV Hebrides after they are replaced on their current routes?

      Not sure about Hebridean Isles, but Caledonian Isles is being relegated to secondary vessel on the Arran route (replacing Isle of Arran) while there is talk about Hebrides moving to Oban to replace Coruisk as the secondary Mull vessel.

    Looks amazing, where are the shops and the lifts and ramp for the disabled and those who can't manage the stairs with their bags? 21C terminal should have 21C attitude to access. Also wondering where the shops are. Brodick is very short of retail units and shops would make the wait in the winter much more pleasant.

  • @TheScarwood
    @TheScarwood Před 10 lety

    As someone who has lived on Arran for over eight years, I'd like to say this. Many of us do NOT need, or even want this new ferry terminal. Many of the islanders are pensioners, who are put off by walking up a flight of stairs to get to the ferry. The lifts won't be much better - the island is often subject to power outages. Frankly, we think that the money would be better spent improving the terminal at Ardrossan, where vast improvements are actually needed. This new terminal is a waste of money and effort, and therefore a white elephant. Full stop.

    • @CalMacandWaverleyEnthusiast
      @CalMacandWaverleyEnthusiast Před 10 lety

      Expansion in ardrossan is difficult, as calmac don't own everything, clydeport does as well as the fact that ardrossan is a harbour rather than a pier. Another thing is that more ships are required on the service to take more people but it would mean that another linkspan could be useful as well as the fact that ships cant just get bigger for the service as the depth is far to little on the current linkspan, M.V. Isle of Lewis could never call there for the reason that her 4.19m draft can not fit in the pier depth but in the new one it might, the reason for this upgrade is not the terminal but the pier, and as a result a closer terminal and walkway is needed, we are lucky the old pier isn't getting destroyed.
