I HATE Tire Service Companies - 2018 Subaru Forester Lug Studs and Nuts Replacement

Some company did my friend dirty. BAD dirty. They put tires on the Subaru after "servicing" and broke at least 5 lug studs. ALL TIRES had some form of either broken lug studs and or nuts. Also they put on mix-matched lug nuts as well. The mechanic told the customer to send it, and their service writer also told them: "Its fine don't worry about it." Unbelievable! We will right the wrong that th...

      Plus it’s enamel paint. Very tough. The wire wheel I don’t think would be able to take it off so easily. The paint needs to be taken off with something more abrasive, such as sand blasting or sandpaper.

    You are misinforming a lot of people on this subject. 10 years of tire service I can tell you that every lug or stud I ever broke was from taking the nut off and never putting it on. Because of this you would have to go back to the previous installer usually the owners that cross threaded the nut on the stud putting it on. This situation would automatically become my fault and my responsibility to repair because it broke when taking it off. The exact accusation that you make in this video. I can tell by looking this is exactly what happened to these lugs. Most likely previously rammed on with an impact and not started by hand as you correctly did in your video. Great repair job by the way.

    First of all, tire breakers make minimum wage (or as close as possible), usually means untrained kids and temporary employees. Typically you find a problem created the last time the wheels were installed the next time you need to remove them. As far as mis-mached nuts, I worked in a university city with 7 auto parts stores and often couldn't find 5 correct lug nuts for common US cars, let alone 12 x 1.25 Japanese lug nuts. Still sending it without repairs is not cool, unless the customer specifically refused repairs.

    • @SwedeMachine
      @SwedeMachine Před měsícem

      You know your lug nut thread pitch size. Very good! Yes even if they had to order them it would only take a few days to get them. I get it some parts are not commonly in stock and you’ve got to chase them down. That’s fine. Due to slight surface rust on the broken studs it’s been more than a few days. Probably months I’m guessing. I’d have to ask the owner. So there was more than enough time to fix them. I know we all start somewhere with our skill set, but this is a pretty crucial piece of hardware that definitely demands special attention. Thank you for sharing👍🏼

    Modern air impact guns can easily reach 1200lb. ft. I know that it’s more trouble but I used a torque wrench to finish tightening wheels after running the nuts up snug with an air gun. Due to the massive number of guys getting out of the automotive industry many places have hired warm bodies to try to fill the gaps. 80% of young graduates of automotive repair schools quit within the first two years after graduating. It’s got exponentially worse post-Wuhan lockdowns. Unfortunately it’s not going to get better anytime soon. The exodus of good people from the automotive industry has been an ongoing problem for at least 25 years and it hasn’t caused any significant change in how shops compensate good workers.

    Had a tire shop ruin a set of original 5x5.5 Lincoln steelies, they uggadugga'd the nuts on so far the cones bottomed out on the face of the brake drums, completely flattening the center section of the steel wheels. Once loosened back out, the wheels were unsafe to use as they wouldn't clamp properly anymore. They ended up begrudgingly paying me enough for new wheels. Since factory replacement 5x5.5 steelies aren't cheap, I ended up buying a used set off a friend and used the rest of the reimbursement to get the old wheels repaired and refinished. Fortunately a couple years ago I found a small tire shop with good, honest folk. I've become a repeat customer and they have noticed that too, I've gotten good deals and discounts a few times!

    As a mechanic for 45 years I've seen so much of this crap. Hey if you break it be a pro and fix it ! I recently had new tires put on my 2011 RAM. By PEP boys. The musta used the most powerful impact wrench ever made to my lug nuts ! Ended up breaking about half of the bolts to get them off. Took literally 2 days to get done ! I brought them all back to the same PEP boys and tossed them on the service counter and ask for Benny, the guy who did the tires so I could very politely tell him to take each and every nut and bolt and slowly as to no do major damage to his asshole place beach one as far up his ass he can get then, no use for penetration oil or motor oil is to be used. Then a lovely young woman, tiny and petite came up and smiles at me and announced she is Benny.........I just proceeded to walk out with my nuts in my hand, got to my truck and cried !

    I've had my studs and lug nuts cross threaded before, but I've never seen anything like this....amazing, and obviously not in a good way. I once had a shop that left my oil drain plug loose and it was leaking bad. Took it back to get them to fix it and they acted like it was my fault. It's unbelievable what people do to others and think they can get away with it. Good job getting this fixed! I'd try to get some kind of restitution from that shop if i were them. Thanks for sharing!

      My shop would instantly terminate a goober for doing such butchery. We do great work with integrity and we work by appointment only . We ain’t cheap and we turn people away almost everyday. Good shops still exist but they are few and far between.

    I used to stack up a bunch of washers and then impact a lug nut on and it would pull the new stud right on through....both ways get the the job done!

    I absolutely love your videos and your handwork is truly admirable. I was wondering, do you sell any of these or are planning to in the future?

    That old tube had a TR150 valve stem which was hand bendable, I like the old tubes more because they were heavier and are good to keep for things like swimming or snow tubing.

      I checked Stovall’s paint job and no I don’t think so. I was able to find to company who had lil tugger with his current paint job and that tow company is still in business in California. (Dumb luck I found an original business card inside the cab) 😉
